Sydney: 4 contrived teams or 1 or 2 "super" clubs?

"The Big Two" option would have to see the creation of a new Sydney Comp, with all of the top traditional Sydney clubs. THough again, there's no current setup, or level in any sport in Aus to compare this concept to. Both the Sydney Comp and the two National Sydney Teams would be reliant on each other, working together to promote RL. It wouldn't work without media interest in the Sydney comp - it would be like the current NRL with two Swans/Warratah like Rugby League clubs who could go toe to toe with those two codes on the national stage.

I think it'd be worth discussing how to make it work. The key is that the two levels work together = instead of losing clubs we'd theoretically be adding more Rugby League teams in Sydney.

But you see that's going back 25 years, where we had the NSWRL and the QRL.

The idea you're suggesting will just end up like club rugby. Fair enough they've a solid competition, but it gets no media attention whatsoever. And very little money in the game.

The Waratahs do well, but they've only a limited following.

But the key is ensuring that we wouldn't end up with something as uninteresting as club rugby... and I don't think it's fair to compare our great game with union. Also, our clubs are (still) richer.

I really believe we could see crowds average 10,000 across the Sydney comp with the two national sides 30,000 plus. There'd be a cross over with those numbers, where as union and AFL have a smaller base to work with.

Rather than being considered a lower (and thus less interesting) division, the Sydney Comp would trade on it's historical ties and exciting up and comers proud to play for their local club (plus maybe the return of the odd NRL player for a season or two), with plenty of media attention and early September afternoon grand final etc. Bigger than the QRL.

Sorry to sound so negative, but may I suggest we give a free Swans season ticket to every rugby league fan that loses his/her team...

4 teams in Sydney sounds good. It maintains a market saturation while at the same time freeing up expansion
