HARRY Kewell has sparked a massive rush for Melbourne Victory memberships. The signing of the Socceroos star has already paid dividends for Victory, with more than 2500 fans buying memberships since last weekend's announcement. At this pace of sales, Victory looks like reaching its cap of 18,000 members before its A-League season kicks off against Sydney FC on October 8.
In the first three days this week memberships jumped from 11,376 to about 13,900 in response to Kewell signing.
"It has been extraordinary," Victory spokesman Trent Jacobs said yesterday. "The way it's trending, it's not beyond the realms of possibility to sell out our memberships. "The response from the members has been unbelievably positive about the outlook for the A-League season, and especially the first two games against Sydney and Heart." Victory decided to cap its 13-game membership at 18,000 to allow as many casual fans as possible to attend games. A spike in Victory shirt sales can also be expected when the new adidas home and away strips become available next month and it is known what number Kewell will wear.
