Tahu's arrival pushes Galuvao out of Parramatta

Timana’s coming here, and that’s great for the club, he’s a great player. If that’s at my expense, then so be it.
Parramatta forward Joe Galuvao
Parramatta forward Joe Galuvao is set pushed out of the club to make way for star signing Timana Tahu, with the New Zealand back-rower expected to join Manly.

Galuvao is in talks with the Sea Eagles for next season, admitting the club did not have space under the salary cap to keep him.

“I’m still dealing with Manly. My preference was to stay here, but things happen and change, you know,” Galuvao said.

“That is rugby league, you have to deal with those things.

“The times that I have had here have been awesome. I’ve just enjoyed the opportunity.”

Tahu has agreed to join the Eels in his return to the NRL after a stint in rugby union.

Galuvao, who has previously played for the Warriors, Panthers and South Sydney, was philosophical about his exit from Parramatta.

“As is the case at most places, the salary cap comes into consideration.

“Timana’s coming here, and that’s great for the club, he’s a great player. If that’s at my expense, then so be it.

“I’m not one to stand here and kick stones. I’m enjoying my footy.

“I’m here playing for Parra at the moment, and giving my 100 per cent here.”

Perhaps we could offer him a role at the club in a non playing position? Maybe he can sell hot dogs outside the ground, It'll be a shame if he goes to Manly.

Not really pushed, Parra revitalised his carreer this year he should be thanking us. Nobody else would have signed him after his stint at Souths, he was horrible. He could have stayed for less but no hard feelings for taking the better option at Manly.

Does anyone know how the second tier contracts work exactly?

We have $400k to spend on players who are outside the top 25 - does that mean they have to be paid LESS than the players in the top 25? Is there a minimum/ maximum number of players that 400k can be spent on?
Clearly it doesn't have to fund the whole Wenty team, because not everyone who plays for Wenty is in line for an Eels call up (ie - not all of them are on the Eels books - whether in the top 25 or part of the 400k).

I ask because I want to know if it's possible to use a lot of that money on a particular player (ie give 100k of it to Joe)?

I get this feeling that there's more to this Joe story tham meets the eye, if he would of signed with Manly i would of thought he'd do it by now, it wouldn't surprise me if Parra and Joe come to some arrangement that would see him stay at the club.

me too staggs.

If we lost one of the on contract players, Oake, Huaraki, Joe could fit in well.

Yep, I'm starting to think so too. If Manly are in talks with this ESL superstar then they are probably being restricted in offering Joe much by that. A few weeks ago I was thinking the chances of Joe staying were only about 10%... now I reckon that's firmed in to about 60%.

From what I understand the second tier salary cap works within a 400k salary cap or around that, including compulsary match payments for NRL games, so you cannot really throw a chunk at it at just one player. It would be silly to do that anyway, as if you get a large injury toll and have to use a few more players from outside the 25 than expected, you face breaching the salary cap.

Paying 100k for a bloke outside your 25 would affect the whole makeup of the depth of the squad too, it would end up being extremely weak.

From what I've heard and read Joe G doesn't really want to go to Manly. He's happy living in his house with family at St Mary's and travelling to Manly every day for training is too much of a burden. He'd stay with Parra if he could, but if we cannot offer him even a base contract and Manly are offering him a decent one then that's why he'll leave.
