He looks like a tin man when he runs now. I think he's done. No thrust and looks like he can barely swerve at all. Half the time he spins at the line and ends up on his back for an easy hold for the defence.

Prop I don't think so. Blokes will be lining up to hit this version of Sims.

We need more.

We need a big prop to work with Vaughn and a aggressor like hetherington. Not a busted backrower playing prop imo

Tariq wouldn't handle front row.He doesn't have the motor to match it with all the young powerhouse forwards coming through. At his best he was a good impact player running at halfbacks. In fact we are in a lot of trouble in the forwards.Mcinness tries hard ,Vaughan going through the motions,Kerr learning,Tyson strong but one dimensional,no impact bench and that's it.Add this poor pack to the leaderless halves and no wonder we are in big trouble.Hats off to Dufty and Lomax for almost getting us home a few times. They will get heavily marked soon.It started in the second half against South's last night .

'I was petrified of Hook': How midnight feasts proved making of Sims
Christian Nicolussi
December 21, 2020 — 12.01am
Tariq Sims remembers Anthony Griffin as the coach who shifted him from the wing to the middle of the field.

The bloke who forced him to eat sandwiches in the middle of the night and pile on a staggering 25kg. The man who inspired him to become the under-20s player of the year.

Thirteen years after first crossing paths at the Brisbane Broncos, Sims and Griffin have been re-united at St George Illawarra.

And Sims will not hear a bad word about the Dragons' new coach, who encouraged him chase his league dream rather than ''go back to Gerringong and work and surf with my mates the rest of my life''.

"I moved up to Brisbane for the under-20s at the end of 2007, and 'Hook' was my twenties coach,'' Sims tells the Herald. "I did the pre-season on the wing and I was about 85kg holding two wet shoes and a bucket.

"On my birthday in February I got a fine for driving in a T2 lane. I'd just come from Gerringong where there are no T2 lanes. I was making $315 a week working and I was fined $300.

"Then I pulled into training and Hook says, 'I need to talk to you', so he called me into his office and then politely told me how I'm not a winger and how I should move into the middle.

"He dropped me back to Norths Devils and said I couldn't come back until I was 100kg. They were getting me to wake up in the middle of the night and eat sandwiches. I was bloody petrified of Hook, but at the same time I was determined to prove the prick wrong.

"Halfway through that year I got to 100kg, it was for one game against St George down at WIN Stadium. In 2009, I was started every game off the bench, then in 2010 he turned me into the player of the year.''

Sims felt like a ''charity case'' when he first moved to the Broncos given his brothers Ashton and Korbin were already at Red Hill.

Griffin's directness and honesty gave Tariq the belief in himself. Once he had reached 100kg, Griffin asked him to pile on another 10kg. Griffin's half-time sprays, normally directed at him, made sure Sims kept pushing himself.

"What Hook did was force me to become a better person and player and accountable for my actions,'' Sims said. "I was able to pick up the twenties player of the year, and that was because of the fear I had of his half-time sprays and the desire to play in the famous Broncos jersey.''

"What you see is what you get with Hook. He won't lie to you and will tell you how it is. He expects that in return. The only thing that has changed is he's picked up a few extra jokes. They're terrible, but they're dad jokes so I find them quite hilarious.''

Sims was limited to just nine games last season because of injury. Without James Graham and Tyson Frizell, plus the uncertainty surrounding Jack De Belin, the Dragons will need Sims, who turns 31 early next year and will reach 200 games without injury, to lift again.

This is the first off-season Sims has not required surgery. It is a refreshing change, he says, being able to train the first month rather than being a recovering spectator.

The Dragons missed out on tough Tiger Zane Musgrove and young Panther Spencer Leniu, but have added Jack Bird, who will start life back at the Dragons in the forwards.

Sims said as much as he loved former coach Paul McGregor, 'If there was going to be someone to come in, I wouldn't have wanted anyone else other than Hook''.

There’s grounds for optimism regarding Sims in 2021. Tyson Frizzle was injured most of 2019 but came back to play all 20 games plus 3 origins in 2020. We really need Sims to return to Origin form & I'm happy to give him the benefit of the doubt

I am very confident that Griffin and his coaching staff will have Sims firing on all 8 cylinders in 2021. Our problem will be with Frizell's replacement. Can Ford step up 3 rungs of the edge forward ladder to fill the void?

Injury management & rehab was another area we weren’t great at either. Nathan Pickworth & team are gone the only guy kept is the physio.
  • Tony Guilfoyle - Physical Performance Manager
  • Dan Lawson - Medical Performance Manager
  • Elliot Jackson - Strength and Conditioning
  • Cody Parsons - Sports Sciene
  • Davis Theobald - Physiotherapist

Who is now at the Gummies. :)
Although I had the same smile when they signed Price as waterboy assistant.
Then he won a comp with them.
I take some satisfaction that they cheated the cap to finally win. NRL should have taken it off them!

Dragons: Sims putting it all on the line as finals window narrows
Dragons Den

FRANK: Tariq Sims knows the clock is ticking on his finals aspirations. Picture: Dragons Media
FEW people are more aware of how finite NRL careers can be than Dragons veteran Tariq Sims.

The 30-year-old suffered two horrific career-threatening broken legs when his 183-game career was in its infancy. The battle back has been a great story, but it's the lack of finals appearances on his extensive resume driving him ahead of his 11th NRL season.

A barnstorming three-try effort in a qualifying final win over Brisbane in 2018 sits alongside the semi-final loss to Souths a week later and two week-one finals appearances with the Cowboys in 2013 and 2014.

He's desperate to add some more before he's done and knows he'll have to take the lead in a squad that's lost a large chunk of experience on the back of a forgettable 2020 campaign.

"We've got a major job on our hands here and I really want to make sure that we're coming out of the blocks firing this year because I'm getting a bit long in the tooth in footy years," Sims said.

"I'd love to be playing finals football and obviously going to the big dance. Time's ticking and that time is now. At some point we need to make a stand as a leadership group. Being older players, we need to make sure we're setting good examples and preseason's a great opportunity to lay those strong foundations to set up a big season.

"We all know what Hook (Anthony Griffin) is like, he doesn't mince words, he's a straight shooter and he'll let you know if you're not hitting the marks.

"That's probably what's stood out the most this year that everyone's been put on notice and no one's above the team. It started from day one and it's carried all the way through."

The Origin back-rower is the first to admit he needed some rejuvenation after a frustrating 2020 in which he wrestled with injury and suspensions that kept him to just nine games for the season.

It saw him surrender his NSW jersey, while Dragons teammate Paul Vaughan suffered the same fate after a season that saw the club's senior players wear the brunt of criticism. Sims said returning to that arena is a major motivator.

"I respect Brad and everyone involved in the Blues and I was under no illusions, after the season I had last year that I wasn't going to be picked," Sims said.

"To Brad's credit he picked a team that was in form and that's what you pride yourself on as a player, making sure you're playing your best footy to get picked in those sorts of games.

"As far as stoking the fire inside me, it's definitely lit the fuse and makes me even more determined to, first of all, start playing good footy for the Dragons. The rep stuff will take care of itself."

On that score he's feeling back to the peak fitness he enjoyed prior to a standout 2018 campaign that propelled him back into realm of the league's premier back-rowers.

"With our training this year, it's really rejuvenated me," he said.

"Gilly (Tony Guilfoyle) our trainer's, built a strong foundation for me to get my cardio to where it's probably never been before in my career. He's as straight a shooter as you'll get.

"There's only three staff that survived the clean-out so it's been refreshing. There's definitely a new approach to how we're training and how we attack things.

"There's different attacking plan, different defensive structures, but I think the beauty of our squad is that we've got a sprinkle of young and old and everyone's really excited to adapt and change and buy into what we need."

As to whether he'll need to curb his customary aggression to avoid further enforced stints on the sideline, Sims says he'll still set a physical tone but will be looking to make some subtle tweaks.

"As the game evolves and adapts I've got to do the same thing, whether I pull back the reins on certain tackles and go full tilt into some," Sims said.

"I still see myself as setting that bar as high as I possibly can. I want to be that person for our team, we've certainly got players that have come in to our squad that can help me on that journey. That's the beauty of the squad."

How good is Tariq going now?
Thought he was cooked there for a while but he is breathing fire again.
Love this bloke.
Indeed TS is going very well and I am very pleased for you as I know you have always had belief.

Obviously I am not his greatest fan but I did say his brother's coming was questionable as to how well TS would go and I also said that his brother's going could only be a plus for TS.

TS is another example of someone buying into the coaches plans and clearly benefiting as a result.

I do like his best work and do get pissed off when his effort slackens so let's hope that the worst was all down to shit coaching and playing busted and that from here on in he stays fit and continues doing what he is doing.

As I said Crush I am really pleased for you and can see your grin from my place.

By the way get the dentist to have a look at the right canine it looks like you have been eating raw meat and a bit has lodged there.

Love this bloke.
He is going very well as I knew he would once he strung some games together. We are going to need him at his absolute best to give young Sam Walker a proper introduction to the NRL in the CS game.
