The TRL comprises of a four Team Senior competition based in Hobart played over summer between November and February. It is envisaged that we will also have a Northern based competition within the next two years.

The TRL also has a developing Junior Club base which includes under 17s Teams from Launceston and Hobart.

In addition to this the Australian Rugby League (ARL) has announced the appointment of a Junior Development Officer to be based in Hobart who will develop League all through out the State. Thousands of kids will be put through Rugby League clinics in Tasmania annually through this role.

We are also developing a State representative team which will play against a visiting Regional Team next year. The ARL has also announced that the best Tasmanian players will be selected to play in the Affiliated States Competition run by the ARL in 2011.

One of our best players, Sidney Fielea, was recently in the news after attending a trial with the NRL Club, the Canberra Raiders.

On top of all of this, the TRL is negotiating with the ARL for members of the NRL Club, the Melbourne Storm, to visit Tasmania as part of the National Community Carnival in February 2011. This should be confirmed shortly.

The ARL has also indicated interest in holding an NRL trial match perhaps in 2012. Admittedly, this will require a lot of future discussion with stakeholders including the State Government.

In recent weeks the TRL has enjoyed media coverage by both WIN television and The Mercury newspaper and we are looking to grow this relationship with these media outlets. HOFM radio station is also heavily supporting the TRL by way of regular weekly broadcasts during the coming season.

The TRL is also planning major social events for the general public to raise funds and awareness.

To sum all of this up, the TRL is making big strides in establishing Rugby League in Tasmania in partnership with the ARL.

The text above was used in one of our letters to a potential sponsor - its a reasonable update, I think, of where the TRL is at the moment for those interested.

Good work and good luck in your efforts to spread the game in Tassie.

Don't know what it's like in Hobart, but the people I know in Launceston are barely aware of rugby, let alone the fine distinctions of the differences between league and union. :?

Thanks mate.

And I know what you mean about Launceston.

Playing in summer ensures we are neutral in the so called 'Code War'.

Launceston is a hard nut to crack. Most of our efforts are in Hobart at the moment.

Little steps are good steps.

Southern Rabbitohs tame Hobart Tigers
The Southern Rabbitohs defeated last season’s premiers, the Hobart Tigers, 26 to 14 in a bruising encounter at Rugby Park last Saturday.

The Rabbitohs played solid football in perfect conditions which would have pleased Coach John Bainivalu.

The Rabbitohs led 16 to 4 at half time and withstood a Tigers comeback in the second half to record a strong win.

Evergreen Jeff Tonks had a strong game at full back while the best for the Tigers was Vilimi Pomana who dominated at outside centre.

In the later game the Thunder roarded home against the Cowboys after the game was tied up at 12 all at half time.

Hooker, Corey Morris, led the Thunder to a deserved 34 to 18 win and was best on the ground.

Tom Dare was the best for the Cowboys who showed glimpses of last years form which saw them end up Minor Premiers.

Thunder Coach, Wayne Armstrong, has the Club ticking at the moment but they face a tough match next week against the Rabbitohs who have hit the ground running.

The Cowboys take on the Tigers in the other game next week. Both games are at Rugby Park with the kick off at 4pm.

Keep up the good work man

The AFL look like they are never going to put a team down there

League should really make a raid and try to take it, it'd be good to one day have a Tasmanian team. Decent sized market with 500,000 odd people

Tigers roar back into form

The Hobart Tigers produced a strong performance to defeat a gallant Eastern Thunder side 44 to 16 at Rugby Park on Saturday.

Tiger's lock,Sunnia Maafu, was on fire with a three try haul ably supported by Belgian import Wouter Van der Veken. The Tigers defence was outstanding and Coach Mick Hunt is slowly bringing the Team back to form.

In the other game the Cowboys fought ladder leaders all the way losing 40 to 22 in an entertaining clash. Shannon Carrodus and Sean Rogers were best on the field for the Rabbitohs. However, the Cowboys are improving each week. Matt and Graeme Wertheimer were outstanding for the Cowboys. Stu Dare had a strong game until injuring his knee.

Next Saturday the Tigers play the Cowboys at 1.30 and the Thunder play the Rabbitohs. Both games are at Rugby Park and will be followed by a Masters game between Tasmania and the Melbourne Thunder.

Thanks for the update great to read about Rugby League in other States. When the Competition finishes In Feb just an idea but if the ARL and the NSWRL gave you guys some support by encouraging some clubs in the NSW Cup to arrange for a trial before the season starts for a few players it would give a definite pathway to the first home grown Tasmanian in the NRL and in the future funds permitting possibly a Tasmanian team in the NSW Cup. Anyway keep up the great work.

Thanks mate. The word is that the Storm are coming to Tassie for the Community Carnival in February 2011 and a Storm Trial is possible in 2012
