Tate aiming for February

New Zealand Warriors new signing Brent Tate says he will be ready to play by the time the 2008 National Rugby League kicks off.

Unpacking in Auckland yesterday, he said he was "pretty excited" as his reconstructed knee was responding well to rehabilitation.

Tate, 25, the Broncos and Queensland State of Origin star, said his target was the trial games in February.

"It is a tough injury to get through, but I think the rehab programmes that they've got in place now, you can come back feeling confident, as fit and as quick as what you do before hand," he told TV3.

"I feel as though I'm settling pretty well in Auckland and hopefully I'll fit in pretty well at the Warriors, I'm pretty sure and confident that I will."

Tate's strike power is sure to make him an instant hit at Mt Smart Stadium and he's predicting big things, believing there is immense potential in the Auckland-based club.

"I've heard a few people say that club is a sleeping giant and I really believe that there's a lot of potential in the club."

"I'm only too pleased to be watching them smash other guys (rather) than me getting smashed, that's for sure."
Good news ... I think.

The more I think about the Tate signing, the more I think it's a blunder.

The Steve Price influence usually equals goodness, but this time, I'm not
so sure.

Great news.

He said he wants to play right centre. And I'd say he would have pretty much been told he could play there when he signed.

Will he ever be the same? Look at Hape, he has had two serious knee injurys and he still goes great.

You guys will be loving him next year when he is running tries in from everywhere;-)

yeap i never agreed with it in the first place - imagine who we could of signed for 400,000. Like a franchise halfback

hardcase - steve price looks like he has already given tates some serious lessons on to potray himself to the media and public so he is as loved as pricey.
He might need those p.r skills if he doesnt perform next year.

Bit of competition for the other centre spot - mannering might be benched, as ropati shown his attacking flair at centre much more so than mannering.

Hopefully he recovers - he''ll be pushing it to be back for round 1.

Yep a franchise halfback like Brett Kirmorely. Thats about it.

I'm happy with Taters. Mannering-->Second row.

i didnt like it much when i first heard it but i suppose whats done is done now and warriors fans need to get behind him.

the thing i was most shocked about was they had $400,000-$500,000 to look for a outside back and they went for Tate... Hodges & Tahu were on the market also... Tahu would have suited the warriors i thought... im shattered we lost him...

To be honest, I had my doubts when he first signed, but now that I think about it, I'm starting to think it'll pay some serious dividends in the latter years of his contract. He may not be what we need for 08 but I think he could be exactly what we need for the post-wiki/price era. The guy has extensive NRL experience, Origin experience, International experience and finals experience, all of which will enable him to take a senior role in the team once he finds his feet.

I think the haters and likers will be split until the season starts though. It's going to be a long off season.

You really think Hodges would have left Brisbane to come to NZ for $400,000? You are kidding yourself.

Firmly in the likers corner of buying Tate. And I think most people will be by the end of next season.

+ =Awesome

You wouldn't trust Hodges away from Wayne Bennett anyway.

He was terrible at the Roosters.

thats true... i suppose Tate would be a safer option than hodges.

but i see Hodges and Tahu as creaters of opportunities and Tate as a deadly finnisher... i just think its abit of a gamble spending that amount of money on a guy thats spent his whole career reaping the benefits of Darren Lockeyer.

will tate be as deadly with Witt and Rovelli creating in the middle.??
