<H1>Sacked Taumata finally faces his demons

ARANA TAUMATA has taken his first steps to redemption, admitting: "I have a drinking problem."
The 19-year-old's world was crushed last week when the Melbourne Storm fired him after a booze-fuelled night ended with his becoming involved in a fight in Melbourne.
He has now been sacked from four clubs - Melbourne, Canterbury, Sydney Roosters and Brisbane - in three years and is finally facing up to the reason why.
"Alcohol is definitely a problem for me," Taumata said. "I know if I want to be a professional footy player I have to overcome my problems with alcohol. [Storm coach] Craig Bellamy has told me it's something I need to deal with. I don't need alcohol in my life. It just gets me into trouble "
Rather than abandon the teenage prodigy completely, the Storm are offering him free use of their counselling services. And Bellamy and his assistant, Kiwis boss Stephen Kearney, have signalled a possible return to the club if he can stay sober for a year.
"They talked with me during the week and said they are going to help put me through a rehabilitation course for a year," Taumata said.
"If I can get through that hopefully I will be able to play football for the Storm next year. They told me to think about having a year off footy and just worry about getting myself in order.
"At the end of this year, if I can get through an alcohol program, they will talk to the Melbourne board and try offer me a deal next year. I've done it before. At the Dogs, I stayed off the drink for about six months because Sonny Bill Williams helped me out."
Taumata is under no illusions about the demon in his life.
"My problems are all alcohol-related," he said. "The program [I'll be on] will be about helping me with my drinking. It's about making the right decisions with alcohol and when I'm on the drink. I always seem to do stupid stuff when I'm drinking."
Taumata also needs to deal with his guilt. After being sacked by the Broncos, Roosters and Bulldogs, the Storm took a chance on him when nobody else would. The Knights were about to sign him last year but pulled out at the last minute.
"These blokes [Bellamy and Kearney] took a chance on me and I let them down," Taumata said. "I'm gutted. I've been going so good and everyone at the club has been so pleased with me. Then this happens. I let down all of the people who believed in me."
