Team for the Broncos Game

With Hodges not being named and their forward pack looking pretty strong, I reckon Mary will end up doing what he did last week, after the injuries.

Aitken and Pete M on one side.

Marketo and Hunt on the other.

JDB at 5/8, purely for defensive reasons - and the fact that Brisbane have good running backrowers.

Widdop and Dugan to run the team around (with the help of Rein)

H'mmmm,, no one to play half or 5/8 with Benji injured?

Doesn't the club have a young player who is play maker of sorts in the lower grades who can play 5/8 in first grade for a game or two? primed and ready to go! let me at em, etc.

Would have thought a club like ours should have quality back up players for the most important positions on the field - being half and five eight ??

Well we have Hutch and Crook, that's who I would have thought would be obvious choices?

Benji hasn't played a full season in years, he was never going to play all 26 rounds. So if we have lost confidence in our back ups, then our strategy sux, seeing who we let walk out the door.

I guess Mann has been brought in to play a back up half role next year.

Give Green a break last time he filled in he did it exceptionally well and is as good if not better than the rest of the options held.

Lol there is some ridiculous and pointless out-of-the-box thinking in this thread!

Heres an idea - lets play our best centres in the centres, our best available wingers on the wing, and a proper half in the halves!!!

Anyone got some thoughts on Vaivai form watching him in the cutters?

This was taken from an article re: under 20's team of the year '09... gotta be a better option than Green.
No doubt Vaivai's got a checked past, wondering if it's holding him back..

Taioalo Vaivai

With a rare turn of pace and a brilliant ability to offload, Vaivai was widely regarded as one of the can?t miss kids in the class of 2009. He made his first grade debut that season, scoring a try in the Rabbitohs 40-10 defeat to Penrith in Round 24.

Injuries and poor form saw him play just one game in the big leagues in 2010 and he was sacked by the Rabbitohs early the following year after he was found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm on his girlfriend. He was sacked by Souths and became Phil Gould?s first signing for Penrith but failed to show much in seven appearances for the injury hit mountain men. He?s spent the last few seasons playing for the Illawarra Cutters in the NSW Cup.

I'll always remember Vaivai as that bloke who made a line break from centre against us and got run down by Weyman.

Exactly.

If we don't have ready made back ups available, then our roster management is poor. And it absolutely kills me that a guy like Bird who we didn't consider worthy of first grade is playing 5/8 for a team that's battling for a top 4 spot, while we're considering guys like De Belin, Farrell and Marketo to fill in.

Absolute madness.

The Broncos don't have much in the outside backs. They rely on an agile pack and clever halves then defend like demons. If there was one team we could play a bit short in the backs it's the Broncos. Our forwards can win this one for us. We do need to take advantage of our opportunities. Big game for Rein.

Would you swap Bird for Widdop or Marshall?

BENNY VERSUS MARY

It's an interesting clash of the coaches when Wayne Bennett's Broncos host Paul McGregor's Dragons on Friday night at Suncorp.

You'll remember that "Benny" dumped "Mary" from his support staff when the master coach joined the Dragons in 2009.

Bennett then agreed to return to the club this year, threatening to push McGregor aside again, before reneging on the deal at the 11th hour.

McGregor has done wonders in finally mopping up the mess that has been at the club ever since Bennett left in 2011.

No I wouldn't.

I'm just questioning our strategy on who our back up halves should be. It's a no brainer to give the gig to Hutch or Crook, otherwise, what are they doing here? Are they not part of the succession plan?

I would have thought the decision not to retain Williams, Henry or Bird meant that we had complete faith in Hutch or Crook.

If we're now thinking about putting a winger and backrower (Farrell and Marketo) who are both fringe first graders, or a player that normally plays lock or prop (De Belin) in such a key postion, I am seriously questioning our roster management.

no, but he'd make a nice ball playing lock forward in the meantime....
That's true....if only he had decided to take our higher monetary offer to stay. It was Bird's decision to go to Sharks....Dragons wanted him to stay. Bird wanted to go.....we didn't let him go. Time to get over it guys!
