I can not see Williams starting over Fifita, I really can’t. Fifita will have the fire in his belly after a strong All Stars match and a shit 2020, I can see him being a nuisance for other teams again this year. Williams did nothing to earn his spot going off his form last season. Andrew simply has to be there.

Ummmmm str ong all stars match? Williams is one of the most improved of last years Sharks, you want to see him at Manly?

So A-Fi has been left out, not injured at all.

A focus on defence has led to Andrew Fifita’s axing from the Cronulla side but coach John Morris has not closed the door on Fifita making his way back into the top 17.

Fifita was the biggest-name casualty when teams were released on Tuesday with the two-time prop of the year overlooked for Cronulla’s match against St George Illawarra on Sunday. Instead he is expected to line-up for feeder-club Newtown against the Dragons on Sunday.

Morris made the brave call with his own coaching future on the line.

“It’s a testament to the other middles in our squad and how fiercely the competition is for spots this year,” Morris said.

“Defence has been a huge focus for us. That was one part of our game that wasn’t up to scratch. We were 16th for missed tackles. The boys have known from the first day of pre-season that the side was going to be picked on who put in the work. There have been some guys who have really earnt their jersey and I couldn’t leave them out.

“That’s the 17 I’ve gone for this week.”

Veteran Aiden Tolman and skilful middle Billy Magoulious have taken Fifita’s spot. The path back to the NRL could be harder for the Tongan international too when Royce Hunt and Siosifa Talakai make their return to the top grade. Fifita has shed weight during the off-season but his ability to do a complete a normal training load is hampered by his knee condition.

Morris expects Fifita to push for a first grade spot again.

“Of course Andrew is a huge part of our team,” Morris said. “He understands the areas of his game that we want to see improvement in. Losing the weight that he has already will allow to do things more effectively. He has been positive in receiving the news and wants to turn it around as quick as he can.”

Good, this is what I want to see. Positive signs.

As long as it translates into the field.

Risky but we can still lose with AF coming off the bench. So I guess Morris is making his play.
I like the focus on D from day one but blind freddy could have seen that. We made the semis on the incredible form of SJ last year, nothing more than that. Personally I think we might struggle past the 30 meter line in attack unless Moylan gets his shit together.

So now Fifita will do one of 2 things... chuck his toys out of the cot and disrupt the whole squad and take Morris down with him or .... actually I can only think of 1 thing he is likely to do unfortunately.

Feef struggled a bit laterally last year...but he was injured. Never the strongest defender, but if moz is putting woods, magoo, or even Williams ahead of him ....well I’m sorry.

Why the hell wouldn’t you give feef first crack with all the upside in offence he creates. This is dumb

Young Pele has next to no chance playing 1st grade this year under this logic.

I think that's why he is playing Flegg to start, I would guess going to play big minutes then move him to jets do the same.
Pele won't FG till I think at least round 15

Look I get bombers comment trying to draw a line in the sand but the dragons would be cheering that fifi is still on the bus. I’m not sure that to fix your D you take away a threat.

He won't be in 1st grade this year unless they have a diabolical injury episode. He is very slow around marker defence.
