But also noting that Coach Arthur had been quoted in the off-season about wanting to try Brown in the centres to allow Jake some game time in the halves - and actually pulled that move in the Penrith trial game (without hardly any backline players unavailable).

I don’t think we can afford to disrupt our forward rotation so for me Niukore stays where he is.

simmonsen was playing centre in Cup for a few weeks so I think he slots in and keep Waqa on the wing. They can interchange throughout the game if necessary

Yeah, and as per any other game having Niukore in the forwards gives us cover for an injury in the backs. We name him in the centres and we lose that versatility.

That then only leaves us the option ( assuming JA will be named ) of moving Drown into centres to replace an injury and JA into the halves to replace Drown, which is back to the line up that got beaten by the Cows last time.

Unless of course we name another back on the bench ( which would seem super moronic ) or we name Cartwright in place of ??? on the bench

And I really wouldn't like to see Cartwright defending any further out than fourth, maybe third at a stretch man in. He'll get carved up to far out on the edge.

In a trial, where it's meaningless apart from getting a hit out or testing combinations, pretty poor evidence of intent as opposed to not doing it in the first six games of year, and even as far as naming Niukore in our round six loss to the Tigers above switching Drown in the centres.

It wasn't until round seven where Jakey got a full tilt in the Halves against the Knights, whom we flogged, despite having to go down that road due to injury leaving us that thin we were looking outside the club to sign an outside back as replacement / cover. And that only lasted for the next game against the Cowboys.

Both Nrown and Carty were on the bench for the Cows match as well, so it's not like they were being overlooked for Jakey boy either.

And that line up was done and dusted from there, so none of that points to starting Jake and pushing Dylbro to centre as a preferred option, but it does point to it being an option of pretty much last resort. So it aint happening whilst we've got a body capable of playing centre / wing in reserve.

I’d like to challenge the notion that the Cows have had a great year or that they are the real deal. Like Cronulla, they have been kissed on the dick and had a rails run to the top 4.

Can they beat us ? Of course they can, because we might not turn up or they may lift in a rush of home ground adrenaline. But I am taking issue with their “real deal” tag and how Paten is the coach on everyone’s shoping lists.

The difference between them, the Sharks and us ? They actually won the games they were supposed to win.

Notes:

1. They beat us in NT in one of our didn’t turn up weeks. I think we beat ourselves rather than they beat us. Fair play, they got the chocolates.
2. They beat Storm, the week after Pennys beat Storm. Can’t argue with that.
3. The win against Pennys was vs a reggies team.
4. They beat Cronulla last week.

The thing is around Payten as a coach that you need to consider in terms of his performance is not just where they are at now, but where they came from to get there.

They've gone from conceding 748 points last year, making them the worst defence in the comp by that measure, to the second best this year conceding just 361 points. That change in defense is why they finished where they did, and they did it with the only major change to their roster being a half back in Townsend who many didn't rate, and a few unproven no names or young fellas really making their mark.

Sure They haven't had the toughest of draws, with 10 games against the eventual top eight and only 5 wins from that ( Two of them being against Canberra early in the season when they were odds on to finish well outta the eight ) so you could easily say they were kissed on the dick with that, but even with a tougher draw, they still woulda made the eight based on the improvement in their defence alone, and from where they were last year, that's a good rap for Peyton.

Coach of year though? Yeah I dunno, if they beat us this week and make the GF, I'd say yeah, probably deserves it, lose and he's an also ran. Not because of that one game mind, but because that one game probably tips the scales either way for mine.

Same as if we had lost to Canberra I'd have called it underperformance from us and therefore BA as well.
