Dugan back in for Raiders

Tuesday, June 23, 2009
The CFMEU Canberra Raiders have named rookie Josh Dugan at fullback this weekend, for the Green Machine’s all important clash with the Melbourne Storm at Canberra Stadium.
Dugan has been in fantastic form for the Raiders feeder club South’s Logan over the past fortnight and he replaces David Milne who has been ruled out for three weeks with a groin injury.
Joel Monaghan has been named in the centres and will return to the squad Thursday after State of Origin II in Sydney, which means Brett Kelly comes out of the Raiders backline and will line up for South’s Logan in the Queensland Cup.
Other changes include a reshuffle to the Raiders front row with David Shillington and Troy Thompson to start up front, with Dane Tilse moving to the bench and Scott Logan dropping out of the squad.
Logan will also play for South’s Logan this weekend and has been replaced on the bench by Nigel Plum, with forward Joe Picker returning to the top grade line-up as 18th man.
Raiders Coach David Furner said his side needed to shake things up after the loss to Manly on Sunday and will give other players the chance to make an impact against the Storm.
“We’re boosted by the return of Joel Monaghan from origin, while Josh Dugan gets another chance after some great games for South’s Logan,” Furner said. “We’ve also gone for some mobility on the bench with Nigel Plum and Joe Picker.”

Furner likes to pick players that score doubles at South Logan. Thompson starting was an interesting one but guess Furner think hes is best starting. We will see on that front.

Still need a hooker on that bench. We are flat as flat when Buttriss goes off.

i dont think enough has been done , id like to see picker start and Tongue to the bench. Also id like JT to get a gig

Dugan back is well deserved his form has been good. He gets 3 weeks before Milne is due back.

I still don't see us breaking our duck against the Storm but that side looks much better than previous weeks. Needs more Picker and less Miller.

Miller has been making good metres , his stats are quite good , which is suprising to me TBH.

I like Plum he hits hard in tackles but id rather have Joel Thompson on the bench , he can hit the fringes late in the halves and has a great offload.

Logan had to be dropped , he hasnt hit his straps this year.

What we have to do as a team is dominate the ruck , we cant allow the storm to do that. Quick play the balls should put them on the back foot and with players backing up from SOO we should be able to tire them out.
fingers crossed.

Miller was pretty hopeless on the weekend. He is too one dimensional in the modern game IMO, he is a poor man's Martin Lang.

That team inspires me with zero confidence, don't see how we're supposed to score enough points to beat the Storm.

About bloody time Dugan was picked. Milne is good if we're murdering the opposition, otherwise he is a liability. Dugan is the future.

Amen. Sorry guys, Milne leaks more points that he scores. Dead set liability at the back. He is a great line runner and that is about it. I dread every time the ball is in his hands from a kick return. I close my eyes every time a bomb goes up.

Dugan is a deadset superstar. We need him to stick in the number 1 jersey from now on. Give the young fellow some time. He's the best lime green product we've had in a very, very long time.

I still like Milne at fullback over Dugan to be honest... I know Dugan is young but he has yet to do anything special at fullback in first grade... He kills it in the Toyota Cup but that form just doesn't come out in first grade aparantly...

That said not like Milne can play with a three week injury (he isn't Tongue or Jason Croker) so guess the fullback choice is done for a while.

I'm guessing the injury to milne forced furner's hand to include dugan. The injury may be a reason why milne looked flat on the weekend.

so you give him 3 games and if he doesn't play like a superstar, throw him on the trash heap?

Not only did dugan not do anything that warranted being dropped, he was improving each game.
When a coach decides to blood juniors, they should be given a reasonable amount of time to adapt. Throwing them back and forth between firsts and reserves just stunts their development I think.

Furner is a twit. Look how much Croker has improved by staying in firsts. Dugan has class and talent and needs to be perservered with.

Milne is heart attack material, especially in defence.

Milne adds a bit with support play and kick return but I don't feel that is enough to keep Dugan out. He made a lot of tackle bust in his short stint in FG and I'm sure his support play will improve with more games. And our last game the support play was non existant.

We may have a glimmer of hope if Inglis is ruled out with a broken jaw. Thanks Trent, we owe you one!

We need to put pressure on Slater , he has errors in his game , but if we kick to him then he will carve us up on his kick returns.

Its their forwards that normally roll us , we need to dominate them.

I think more need to hold onto the ball for a start to even build pressure, our handling was dead set rubbish against Manly. We keep on shooting ourselves in the foot. We can only hope that we've hit rock bottom and maybe we can start building something again.
