I agree having a hooker on the bench seems like a waste of a bench spot and I said in the pre-season that I didn't think Arthur would do it.
Obviously he did do it, and to be fair, it worked in two games this year (though Manly has turned out to be the worst team in the comp early on) and it worked for stretches of other games - we have led at the fiftieth minute in every game but one this year. So are we getting run down because we're too small or because of something else? It could be because we lack experience or toughness or skill or speed - those are all things that De Gois offers over many of our bigger and younger players.
Anyway you have to look at it from Arthur's point of view - we have a structure that he analysed would work for us this year, and he built a squad that would suit that, and has already started recruiting to improve it next year. We would have trained in this structure all pre-season. It has been proven that it can work, and has done already this year. For Arthur to drop his bundle now would be the worst thing for the playing group. It would absolve the players who haven't aimed up, and would make the coach look weak, which would kill their confidence in him. As soon as you start trying to please everyone you stop being a leader and instead become a politician.
