But in a perfect world, grown blokes that are role models on huge salaries, should be able to let their football do the sledging... not their mouths.

But in a perfect world, grown blokes that are role models on huge salaries, should be able to let their football do the sledging... not their mouths.

So we hire someone now who listens and either raises this on gameday or can refer it to match review committee.

I don’t know what the appropriate penalty is, but it can be very hurtful and is easy enough to remove from one’s vocabulary

no, I expect racial one's to get more, but this needs to be the line for homophobic ones, guess the question is whether they wader into other childish name calling

I hate to sound insensitive because I don't condone what he said at all, but it all feels too random to me. A rule is only as good as its enforcement. How can they enforce eliminating racial or homophobic slurs from the field unless they mic up every single player and then dig through all the audio every game? It's unrealistic to enforce, therefore it's always going to be a few random unlucky guys here and there that get a big slap on the wrist and made example of, while the 90% of field not in range of a mic continues to go on as usual.

I'm all for eliminating this kind of behaviour - these guys are role models getting paid heaps of money and they should behave like it. But as always, it will be the inconsistency that drives fans and players nuts.

Yeah, inconsistency the real issue.
We going to have player say to ref "Ref Ref he just called me a merkin/androtop/n****r/Mediterranean Descendant/fairy/fat/trans/nice person etc"

They lay down for a penalty so why not.
