I'm no Dino but you've gotta call it how you see it. Widdop was woeful tonight. His kicking options were poor, runs too laterally and takes time and space off his centres and some poor passing. Benji is a lateral player, We can't have 2 lateral playmakers. Widdop needs to straighten the attack. And please no more rubbish little kicks.

I was at the game. My thoughts:

- we dominated them in attack and defence in the first half. Souths were on the ropes. I was sitting with a bunch of Souths supporters, they were worried every time Dugan, Marshall and friz touched the ball
- we should of scored at least 1 more try in the first half
- taking that penalty early in the first half was a negative play. We had their measure and should of gone for the try
- the refs awarded them some dubious penalties gifting them easy meters at crucial times when we were in control of the game early in the second half
- as others have mentioned, when we were chasing the scoreboard, we were not given the rub of the green with some crucial calls (Dugan/Keary)
- in the last 15 minutes, our kicking game was poor
- widdop doesn't look like he is playing with confidence
- we didn't lose the game in the second half, rather the first. We didn't take full advantage of our dominance
- this is the second game in a row where the refs have made some crucial calls against us. Mary needs to start complaining about this at press conferences ala hasler/Bennett do. I don't care what anybody thinks, but I believe, especially leading into big games, it makes a difference. Yes I know you can't critise refs anymore, but I'm sure there is a way Mary can word it to let the reporters run with it. Or have someone else complain about it after the post match pressa.

Overall, I'm happy with where we are at. Souths had to play their best football all year in the second half to beat us. We have more improvement in us than them.

Our backline play is just not slick when you compare it to the good sides like Souths. Everything is done at speed with decoys running the right lines and passes all hitting the mark. It's been a problem for us fur a number of years to be honest , but defence is keeping us in games this year.

Every now and then we manage to execute, like Nightys try, but this is more an exception than the rule. We need to be more consistent running out good plays if we're gonna give the comp a shake this year.

Widdops try was scored from 60 meters out. I didn't see any long distance Souths tries tonight.

Understand what you're trying to say, but we are not that bad. Widdops form though is a bit of a concern, at times he looks like he is somewhere else tbh.

Not sure why there is any negativity.
Dragons had more line breaks, a stack more metres, missed less tackles, made more tackles, had more offloads.
Only two stats they didn't win were 50/50 calls their way and the penalty count.

And they only lost by 6, against the "benchmark"...

I don't think we were bad at all. As I said, Souths were on tonight, they completed close to 100% in the second half.

Our structure inside the 20 season is just a bit lacking, mainly because Dugan is not a ball player and we have no attacking flair in our centres.

Plenty of time to fix this though, and I'm confident we'll win many more games this year.

accurate overall summary...we are a very good football team now...some individual errors let us down (Widdup 2-3 errors)..overall a happy dragon

My view of the game tonite was simple..

They completed better than we did - and in a tight game like this its the xtra sets w the bal that makes the difference.

Lets not discount some horrifying refereeing decisons that turned the tide against us:
- Keary loses ball in ingoal
- Dugan gang tackled without ball after kicking through
- Widdop misses 2 goalkicks tonite he wouldnt normally miss
- Widdop drops Rein inside pass w line open

Benji, Rein, Dugan, and to an extent Matuaitai best players tonite - especially Benji first half was on fire....

Nothing to be ashamed about guys, our attack was good, defence was great, little mistakes here and there against one of top 2 teams in comp...not bad for a team we all thought were wooden spooner specials in March!!!

Im very happy....

The footballing gods were against us tonight guys.

The attack is starting to click.

We lost the 50/50 calls. Up to 6 on my count.

Excellent overall effort by all the players and coaching side.

Have no problem with Saints losing when the spirit and effort is there.

Had both in spades tonight.

A few small lapses in defence when tired during second half.

A couple of additional goals and who knows we may have beaten another "benchmark" side.

We march on !!!

Gents love my Dragons - but widdops little repeated kicks on the left side were very poor. Especially one after the other. Reward our forwards good hard efforts in getting us close to the line, with better play than those kicks. Benji on his side was rippin.

Couldn't keep winning, a loss was always coming but I'm not unhappy about how we lost or who we lost too.

I expect us to annihilate Canberra next weekend

Keeping my chin up. Souffs played their best game since Burgess left and we got done by 6 after missing at least 3 try scoring opportunities in the first half. We did a great job containing their big gun players (Luke, Inglis, Walker) but we were undone by some great attacking formation and Adam Reynolds killer boot.

We definitely need more polish on our finishes and in the opposition 20. Timing on attack is still iffy, and it looks like our halves always run out of room. I think Rein needs to look to take some charge - both our halves are ball runners, so we need someone in the middle directing the play, and that could be Rein.

Our set plays need to tighten up also - all 3 of Souffs tries were from perfectly executed set plays that had the exact desired effect on the defense. Should be watching something like that and coming up with something similar, we rely too much on Benji/Widdop creating something when they should, at times, be following an attacking set thats designed to create opportunity for them.

Big test for Mary next week, really need to stick it to Canberra or we will start to hear noises of us not being the real deal, and that is a slippery slope...

Yep. Nailed it.

Our forwards are actually doing a great job this year controlling the ball and getting us in position to attack. This is the biggest improvement this year.

Unfortunately, when we get in attacking positions, we just lack polish. This is where the good sides will get us as they can be execute their plays much better than us. The period where we had a number of consecutive sets, forwards like Cooper were touching the ball way too much. This is where the likes of Widdop, Marshall and Dugan should be shining, running our set plays.

We can't keep scoring less that 14 points a game and keep winning.

win or lose at least we competed the full 80 mins against the premiership favourites, and with a bit of polish on our attack and last tackle options we can push them all the way next time.

as they say the more games you win in a row the closer you are to a loss, so the key here is to maintain momentum , and bounce back with a win next match. back to back losses will hurt not only in our position on the ladder but also the player's confidence, which is key to keep positive at this stage and not lose their belief
