Souths season on the line: Tuqiri
Written by: AAP+

South Sydney winger Lote Tuqiri says the Rabbitohs NRL season is probably on the line this week, as they strive to regain momentum.
The fourth-placed Rabbitohs are coming off a stop-start month having had two losses and two byes over the past four weeks.
“We’ve had a few important meetings over the last couple of weeks regarding how we’re going to approach this next part of the season,” Tuqiri said.
“I think everyone is there mentally, we’ve just got to back it up on the field now.”
Successive losses against North Queensland and Gold Coast have left Souths with little wriggle room in the chase for a finals spot.
They are one of three teams on 22 points with the next five sides, just two points further back.
One of the group on 20 is Parramatta, who Souths play away against on Friday.
The Eels have had three loses and a bye in the past four weeks and Tuqiri expects them to be in a “filthy” mood after a 48-0 thrashing at the hands of the Warriors.
“Teams have obviously stepped up the last couple of weeks that we’ve played them,” Tuqiri said.
“They’ve been playing their grand final, still trying to make the eight.
“We’ve probably let ourselves down in how we’ve approached the game mentally, but I don’t see that happening this week.
“I know I’ve said that before, but probably our season is on the line too in a sense, because of the big logjam between (between) fourth and 10th.
“We’re all on (almost) the same amount of points.
“We’ve got to step it up and what better time than Friday night.”
If the teams line up as listed, Tuqiri will directly oppose another exciting winger of Fijian origin in Eels flyer Semi Radradra
Just back from some time in Fiji, Tuqiri said Radradra was regarded as a hero there as well as in Parramatta.
“He’s still got a lot of things to work on in his game, but his game so far is still pretty good,” Tuqiri said
“He’s probably up there with the top wingers this year and he’s scored a lot of tries.”

Am happy Sutton is starting five eighth. I expect Keary to come on around 10-15 mins before half time and sutton to go to lock. Am also happy with Isaac starting even though he has been off the last couple of weeks he definitely has to play the 80. If tuqiri is on radradra that could be big danger. Even if reddy plays instead of lote reddy won't be that match fit yet which could also be trouble.

Koroisau is unlucky to miss out, but I guess he's not at the club next year and Keary needs to be eased in to the 5/8 role.

I prefer Tuqiri over Reddy and Merritt over both.

Tuqiri had a great game against the Titans.
I reckon when he is on song he is better than both Reddy and Merritt.

I'd prefer Reddy over both Tuqiri and Merritt

He is safer defensively, is younger and has more speed than both of them. He has better positioning also.

Madge – Stability is Key

Words: Tom Skolarikis I Video: Chris Beavon
Wed 16th July, 12:00PM A A

Rabbitohs Head Coach, Michael Maguire, says he is looking to build returning playmaker Luke Keary back into his side after yesterday (Tuesday) naming John Sutton at five-eighth for Friday night’s clash with Parramatta at Pirtek Stadium
To see Maguire’s line-up for round 19, please click here.
With eight rounds of the regular season remaining, the Rabbitohs mentor cited the familiarity and stability of John Sutton at pivot as being a solid foundation upon which Keary will integrate.
“At the moment John gives us a lot of stability I suppose at six,” said Madge.
“You’re always looking for that stability at the back end of the season. We’re looking at various combinations with Luke Keary coming back in – we’re working hard at continually building him into the team – and with Sutto (John Sutton) playing in the halves at times, back row at times, it gives us a lot of options.
“But through the pre-season, with Luke Keary unfortunately being injured early on, we had great stability then. It’s about spending a bit of time when we have the opportunity to build Adam (Reynolds) and Luke together, and with John in the back-row there.”
With the playmaking talents of Reynolds, Sutton, Dylan Walker, Apisai Koroisau and Greg Inglis already in his line-up, the addition of Keary offers more options – and selection headaches –for Maguire moving forward.
“It’s about each week finding the best dynamics of those boys being in the team,” said Maguire.
“They all bring something different to the team and great strengths in various areas and it’s just getting that best mix as we move forward.
“To have Luke Keary – whether he’s coming off the bench or starting – we’ve got a great player there along with Adam as well.”
The Rabbitohs will take on a Parramatta outfit that were kept scoreless in a 48-0 drubbing at the hands of the New Zealand Warriors in round 18 – a result Maguire believes will motivate the Eels. But with the Rabbitohs also coming off a loss, Maguire says his side’s position in no different.
“We’ve got everything to play for actually,” said Maguire.
“We didn’t play well in our last game, but it’s about what’s in front of us. Origin’s finished, we’re all back together again –now it’s all about our performance on the park.”

Says Rabbits Keen to Bounce Back
Words: Tom Skolarikis I Video: Chris Beavon

While admitting that his side’s last loss against the Titans was tough, interchange forward Jason Clark says his team is keen to regroup after the bye and atone this Friday against the Eels at Parramatta.
“A loss is always hard,” admitted Clark.
“Having the bye, hopefully we can re-group and look forward to this week.”
Clark added that the formula to success in the forwards was simplicity ahead of tomorrow night’s clash, pointing to the talents of halves such as John Sutton, Adam Reynolds and Luke Keary as the key to steering Souths’ big men around the pitch.
The Souths Junior admitted that having the depth of playmaking talent offers a number of options to the side moving forward. The prospect of seeing those players gel is one that excites Clark.
“Sutto (John Sutton) has been over the past couple of years probably our most dominant half,” said Clark.
“Renno (Adam Reynolds) does a great job there and now that Luke (Keary) is there, he’s doing a great job as well.
“We’ll have our spots on the field where one of them will take over at the right time, but I’m looking forward to the boys getting their combinations together and gelling the right way.”

Inglis to Wear 16 for Mckinnon

Thu 17th July, 11:25AM A A http://www.rabbitohs.com.au/news/_jcr_content/par/newslist_95ce.rss

Rabbitohs fullback, Greg Inglis, will RiseForAlex tomorrow night (Friday) against the Parramatta Eels by resting his number one jersey and donning the number 16 of Knights forward Alex Mckinnon.
Inglis, a Test and Origin representative, will honour Mckinnon during the NRL’s RiseForAlex round, by wearing the number worn by the Knight when he sustained a spinal injury in round three.
Rabbitohs player Jason Clark – originally named in number 16 for the match – will instead wear jumper number 21.
The NRL’s RiseForAlex round is an initiative designed to provide ongoing financial and medical support to Newcastle Knights forward, Alex McKinnon, who was injured during round 3 of the Telstra Premiership.
The fund will look to provide support for accessible housing, a vehicle, a wheelchair, physiotherapy and rehabilitation assistance as well as ongoing medical assistance as required.

NRL & NYC Previews - Rd 19, 2014

Words: Tom Skolarikis I Video: Chris Beavon

Eels v Rabbitohs
Pirtek Stadium
Friday, 7.40pm
It may be fourth versus eleventh this Friday night when the Rabbitohs come up against the Eels at Parramatta, but a measly two points is all that separates the two Club’s as we delve deeper into the back-end of the competition.
The Rabbitohs stayed in touch with the top-four over the last month, with two byes and two losses making up the Club’s rap-sheet. A round 17 loss to the Gold Coast Titans at home wasn’t the way Head Coach Michael Maguire would have wanted to go into the round 18 bye, but finds himself in just that situation.
But if there were any positives to take out of the Rabbitohs’ last few rounds, it was the successful return of Luke Keary, who started the game against the Titans while John Sutton reverted to the back-row.
Maguire has this week named Keary to start from the bench in jumper number 14, but said that far from being unimpressed with the returning half, was instead looking to re-build him back into a side that is now accustomed to the services of Captain Sutton at pivot. Between Adam Reynolds, John Sutton and Luke Keary, Maguire has plenty of options moving forward.
To see Madge’s full interview, please click here.
The Eels come into the match having gone down to the Warriors by an unflattering 48-0 score-line. But with Origin star Jarryd Hayne back in the side this week, the Rabbitohs are expecting a rejuvenated Parramatta at Pirtek Stadium.
Rabbitohs winger, Lote Tuqiri, was in no doubt this week about the quality that he and his teammates will be up against though, with the dual-international citing Hayne as the Eels’ danger-man.
“He’s a class act and he has been for a while now,” said Tuqiri.
“Jarryd Hayne’s a freak. Obviously he’ll be their go-to, but in saying that, they’ve got a lot of guys stepping up – a lot of young forwards there who’ve played very well this year. Semi Radradra out on the wing as well, so they’re not just a one-man-team, but he (Hayne) certainly helps.”
To see Lote’s full interview, please click here.

Last Time They Met
The Rabbitohs braved atrocious weather in round 15 to beat the Parramatta Eels 30-10 in an away match at ANZ Stadium for their 12th win of the season.

Despite missing Greg Inglis, Chris McQueen, Ben Te’o, Nathan Merritt and George Burgess, the Rabbitohs put on a controlled wet-weather performance to down the last placed Eels convincingly.

The Eels opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Ken Sio touched down in the corner. Sandow’s attempted conversion hit the upright, leaving the Eels early leader by 4-0.

The Rabbitohs went right back on the attack though, with Dylan Walker pouncing on an Adam Reynolds grubber kick in the in-goal in the 17th minute. Reynolds converted to lead 6-4.

Reynolds was denied a try of his own in the 25th minute after the Rabbitohs halfback sliced through the Parramatta defence from close range, only for the video referee to disallow the try thanks to an obstruction.

A strip on debutant Thomas Burgess close to the line gave the Rabbits a chance to post more points, and the men in red and green delivered, a well weighted kick into the in-goal from Justin Hunt giving Dylan Farrell a four-pointer. Reynolds converted from out wide to stretch the Rabbitohs lead to 12-4 going into the break.

The Rabbitohs came out of the blocks firing in the second half, with the boot of Reynolds again proving the vital cog in the red and green backline – Justin Hunt pouncing on another Reynolds grubber to extend the lead to 18-4.

With Souths looking to score just minutes later the Eels turned defence into attack when a wayward pass on the ten metre line allowed Ken Sio to pick up the ball and sprint 90 metres to touch down in the corner for his second. Sandow converted to bring the blue and gold’s within eight points.

Souths got another good opportunity close to the line after Eels fullback Jake Mullaney spilt a John Sutton bomb. It was Adam Reynolds who capitalised, shrugging off Reni Maitua and Joseph Paulo to touch down just next to the posts. Reynolds converted his own try to extend the score to 24-10 in the Rabbitohs’ favour.

The Rabbitohs capitalised on the momentum with Issac Luke running out of dummy half close to the line before passing on to John Sutton who slammed the ball down over the stripe to extend the red and green lead. Reynolds continued his good day with the boot, making it five from five to finish the game 20 minutes before full-time.

Eels v Rabbitohs
Pirtek Stadium
Friday, 5.20pm
The South Sydney Rabbitohs NYC side will take on the Parramatta Eels this Friday night at Pirtek Stadium, with kick-off slated for 5.20pm.
The Rabbitohs come into the round 19 clash against the third-placed Eels on the back of a loss to the Gold Coast Titans in their last outing before the bye.
Ben Gardiner’s NYC squad went down to the Gold Coast Titans by 36-16 in round 17 of the Holden Cup competition.
Three tries to the home-side weren’t enough on a night dominated by the Titans, who looked well in control from the opening whistle, despite some spirited patches from the men in red and green.
Despite being on an equal 20 competition points with the New Zealand Warriors, Souths currently sit in tenth position on the Holden Cup ladder – six points behind the Eels and eight points behind the ladder-leading Newcastle Knights.

At least we're back in the winners circle. A lot of improvement needed though.

A good effort by para, they turned up to play.

Slow start but got our roll on.

Great games from Sam B, Walker and Johnston

Anyone know why Reyno got hooked with 15 to go? Wouldnt surprise me to see him rested next Monday against Canberra.
