Unless there's some movement from the NRL as to our existing assessed cap expenditure, it's hard to see how Paulo and Gordon would make sufficient space to sign Hayne.

But, maybe they'll allow a bit more than usual backloading if there's no obvious advantage this year, and it's either 'Eels or no NRL team'.

Well if it is for just july thru october then thats a 3rd of a season ... if he was on the cap at 900k a season we would maybe need 300k available to get him for that period

ive got no idea where our cap is at right now - i suspect we released more than we actually had to - the nrl held us to randsom to ensure we lost peats (ie a decent player) - i assume not much of watmoughs salary was taken off our cap

And i assume we have buckleys of convincing the nrl their initial judgement of our bad TPAs was inflated

The bloke has been stood down from tomorrow night so option 2 is clearly gone. If we get nothing out if it why should we let him and Canberra benefit. I'm sick of players and player managers dictating terms to clubs and doing what they want. The old homesick or for his welfare excuse is bullshit. They are grown men who signed contracts

And what would you achieve by pursuing that option?

You'd potentially have a cranky bloke in the squad (and at training), in a year in which we can't make the finals anyway, and who is signed elsewhere for next year. This bloke may well be suspended by the NRL come his court case.

By all means, lean on the Raiders for whatever we can get out of them.

By the way, sometimes clubs lean on the players and do what they want. Case in point, Nathan Peats.

Yeh, but not releasing either PAulo or Gordon (or Peats) for a full season either......

I think the Peats thing is what is annoying me. Here was a bloke who didn't want to leave and is forced out. Then within 2 weeks we have 2 other players seemingly not giving a crap about the club that could have gone instead. I know I'm being somewhat immature about it but everyone has the right to spit the dummy on occasion.
What would your thought be if Canberra dont do a player swap but just offer to take Juniors wages over for the year

Releasing Paulo would not have been sufficient to havechanged the situation re Peats (i.e. even if we'd released him 2 weeks ago, the cap saving wasn't enough to get us compliant). Peats is on a lot more money than Paulo this year.

There's a difference between being pissed off with what has happened (which we all are), and with making more misguided decisions and making things worse.

The Raiders probably won't release a player....my thoughts above are based on the assumption that they just take over his wages.

There's no problem with you spitting the dummy, that's fair enough......I just would extrapolate that into advice that the club should follow :)

Peats didnt wanna leave cos things were still relatively rosey .... the place has turned to cow poo since - he's probably glad he got out now

Junior was/is on a relatively small contract
Peats was a RS signing on a significantly big contract that if released would allow the club to play this season for points etc etc
It's definite that Peats did not want to leave, but seems the opinion was that he would not be resigned next year for anything close to his current contract
Would have loved to retain him, but I think we have to trust that BA has a plan for 2017 and is in the Initial stages of implementing that plan.

Or at the stage of at least trying to salvage something from this year with the hope of building for next year.

If we lose Paulo to Canberra I would be keen bring the big dude Rory O'Brien up and see what he offers.

We may not have a choice but to play Rory soon...

He's not a first grader in my opinion

I suppose if our year was going to be f**ked up it may as well be earlier in the season than later. This allows BA more time to salvage something from this year and plan the best strategy for 2017. Of course, I am not convinced that the season that is 2016 has regurgitated all the contents of it's digestive system just yet.

Parramatta Eels young gun Bevan French in line for NRL debut against Newcastle

Auckland Nines revelation Bevan French is in line to make his NRL debut for the Eels against Newcastle at Hunter Stadium on Monday night as Brad Arthur's side searches for a way back from "rock bottom".

The Parramatta coach said on Sunday his team had resolved that "it can't get much worse" after their salary cap breach sanctions were compounded by Corey Norman being charged with drug possession and the five-eighth and front-rower Junior Paulo were warned by police for consorting with known criminals.

Paulo's career at Parramatta is over - he was granted a release on Sunday to join Canberra immediately and was expected to watch the Raiders' match against Canterbury at GIO Stadium from the grandstand - and there is another potential mid-season switch in the works with Michael Gordon a possibility of joining the Sydney Roosters.

Gordon is set to play in Newcastle despite that potential transfer being finalised this week, as are Norman and halves partner Kieran Foran, but there could be a surprise late addition to the line-up after French joined the first-grade side for its captain's run at North Parramatta on Sunday.

The 20-year-old nephew of former St George Illawarra flyer Nathan Blacklock, considered a long-term replacement for Jarryd Hayne, is yet to play in the top grade despite making a name for himself with eight tries in the Eels' pre-season triumph in Auckland.

French's under-20s campaign has been interrupted by injury but his appearance at the captain's run heightened expectations he is close to a debut for the Eels, who will be without NSW Origin centre Michael Jennings on Monday night. Vai Toutai was listed at centre in place of Jennings when Parramatta named their team last Tuesday.

Facing a 12-point deduction Parramatta must win 12 from 13 games to reach the semi-finals and while the charging of Norman was just the latest chapter in a season of drama Arthur said he and Foran had enjoyed a solid week of training, with the captain unable to fly to Brisbane for a planned overnight rehab stay due to a shoulder complaint.

"Kieran has trained well and it also makes a difference when you've got your two halves spending some time together whereas in the last six weeks he's probably done two or three sessions with us," Arthur said.

"That gives a bit of confidence. It's sort of a sense of relief from the boys. It can't get much worse. We've hit rock bottom. The only way for us now is forwards."

On Norman, who was allegedly found with MDMA capsules and prescription muscle relaxants at The Star casino, Arthur said: "He put himself in a silly situation. But we've got to give him a chance to prove his innocence,"

On Foran, the coach said he had been continuing treatment for personal issues from Sydney.

"He's consulted with his doctor up there and he's done a couple of Skype sessions," Arthur said.

"He was only going back for an overnight trip anyway, so he still got what he needed to get out of it. He just needed to get some treatment [on his shoulder]. He'll probably go back up for a couple of days next week."

Arthur admitted that the burden of Parramatta's myriad off-field problems had probably played a role in defeats to South Sydney and Melbourne in the past two rounds.

"Maybe over the last couple of weeks, we haven't been at our best football and it has taken its toll a little bit," Arthur said.

"We're all humans. They're not robots. They've been very strong to put it aside. I can't say for sure but maybe for the past fortnight they've been putting on a brave face.

"They've still been playing with plenty of effort. Maybe their heads haven't been in the game for the full 80 minutes."

Arthur said Daniel Alvaro would replace Paulo in the Eels team against Newcastle.

Is anyone else heading up for the game? I know, crappy Monday night, crappy venue, but now that I've moved to the Central Coast, I might as well take the one advantage of getting up to Newie.

Port bastard.

He's been planned as the long term replacement for Jarryd Hayne and every merkin is hoping Hayne will replace him as soon as possible

If Hayne returns he will be playing 6 and we will not retain Norman. That is what I think the plan will be.
