I hear what you're saying, yeah there's bigger problems...but just because it's not the biggest problem doesn't mean it's not annoying.

I don't think charm and eloquence wins football games but our coach talks absolute shit and is about as uninspiring as they come (read 'it's not a problem if we don't talk about it' and 'process'). As I said in another thread, I can't think of another successful coach in any sport who was as uninspiring. You kinda get a sense of why these guys again aren't responding. These guys are wandering sheep who need a strong sheep dog to kick their arse, who has long experience on the farm. Four coaches in a row who just don't have it - and we've blown off at least one coach who did/does.

This is my problem with all of the Kearney slagging though. Do we actually know that he's uninspiring to the Players? This perception is based off the way he speaks to the media. I'd flip the question and ask how many good coaches actually rip their players apart in the media. Most of them may off handedly allude to things (as Kearney himself has done recently), but the actual arse kicking or motivational stuff is done in the sheds, behind closed doors. What player is going to put in for a coach that hangs him out to dry in public?

You've had involvement with the club in the past. Maybe you know this for a fact and I don't. I'm just curious as to what the truth actually is.

Hasler might be entertaining as hell in his pressers, doesn't mean the players are listening to him though. Bennett is as dry as a nuns proverbial, but it seems like his guys would go to war for him.

Personally Kearney bores me to tears. But I'm not the one who runs out on the field each week.

Hasler's won premierships both as player and coach, Mooks has only done the former (which is, of course, a great achievement in itself). Still, I'd take the boring guy who's done both.

Don't want to derail this thread. But you seem to be closer to the club than most. Any idea on how Kearney is perceived?

Edit. Rich and MKEB please move this to the Kearney thread if it's annoying others.

Some of them have the same problems with Kearney that they've had with the last 5 coaches.

Some just aren't prepared to behave like professional footballers while they're still in NZ.

Bluey, Elliot, McFadden and Maybe Kearney can't fix that shit alone.

No, we don't know he's uninspiring at all. But we don't know RTS is either. It's just an educated guess based on how rambling and illogical they come across in the media/general. As I said in another thread, I cannot think of a coach in any sport that was successful and wasn't some parts a good orator/clear-thinking and expressed speaker in the media/public. And no one could think of one either. I don't like Kearney bashing per se, I'm not a 'hater' as such. I however do not think he can coach and was carried/made to look better as Kiwis coach, and has shown his true colours in the NRL.

I didn't really have any involvement FYI, I was in the media during the golden years so saw a bit more than the average fan I spose. Ivan used to give me nothing, but gee I rated him as a person. And good people make good coaches (and sometimes people who are good at pretending to be good, like Wayne Bennett. Think he might've become an awful person in the last 6-7 years).

This changes when we get a no shit taking coach who has a reasonable idea of how to win NRL matches and a core of no shit taking, 100% every week players who are prepared to sacrifice mateship for getting results (as I've said in the past, like Lucky was). Hoff probably tried to be that but was well in the minority. I don't care how magnificently talented they are, they just need to be hard bastards who train hard, hit hard, don't stop working for a second and will chew out anyone who doesn't do the same. We've got Simon, we need more. As for a coach, I'm not convinced Brad Arthur is anything great as a strategist, the Eels don't do anything magic...but he demands commitment and accountability, backs his players, not afraid to clip them if he needs to etc.

At the moment, you can play league professionally and live near your friends and family in Auckland/NZ without trying too hard. Once the right leadership is formed, that's not an option. You can work bloody hard and stay here, or f**k off elsewhere. Either is good by us.
