No wonder I never saw a single telecast SL game... Monday nights? Shocking idea, then and now.

However, it is interesting to note that Super League had a game telecast on a channel outside of channel nein.

Wish the NRL would grow some balls.

I think the ARL FNF was on at 9:30pm!! Same with SL's MNF.

The Saturday ARL match was on at 4pm with the SL Sunday on ABC at something weird like 5pm.

4 live FTA games.

Certainly better than today, athough I certainly didn't watch much of it.

I was very QLD Cup orientated that year.

Live? In 1997? I dont think so.
Delayed coverage

My bad.

Still more than these days though.

I wanna know when the NSWRL/NRL is going to get serious by putting some RL on FTA on a Saturday. The NSW Cup would be perfect in the afternoon ABC timeslot.

In Melbourne they show the VFL. It just goes to show the people running our game really don't have RL at heart.

We get QLD cup match of the round live on Saturdays with ABC.

From what I remember in 1997, in regards to FTA coverage:

For ARL matches:
Ch9 televised two ARL matches: One Friday Night at 9:30pm (on 2 hr delay) as match of the round for ARL comp, and one Saturday afternoon match at 4pm (1 hr delay)

For SL matches:
Ch9 (although theyinitially didn't want to have any involvement with SL, were forced to showed SL matches) televised one SL match: Monday Night at 9:30pm (2 hr delay), which was the match of the round for SL comp. ABC, showed a Sunday game at 5pm (on 2 1/2 hr delay, using Foxtels coverage and commentary in the beginning, but ended up using their coverage, but ABC provided their own commentary). IIRC, the 2 1/2 hr show at 5pm was hosted by Debbie Spillaine. Also, during the period when they had the infamous World Club Challenge, they televised a WCC match (in Australia) in place of a SL match and occasionally, they televised SL matches from the UK.
Friday Night and Saturday Night WCC matches were televised on Ch9 (and all the finals).

For PayTV, Foxtel covered the remaining 4 SL matches (with Ch9 covering the MNF games) per round, and Optus Vision televised one Sat Night and one Sunday afternoon game for ARL.

I dont think it was ever 9.30 on Ch9 it was the usual format for Friday night football, 8.30pm delayed telecast.

A few times it was live cause of Wimbledon and the cricket.

Remember in 1997 Australia touring England and had the rights for a short time but handed it to ABC cause it clashed with the Rugby League.

The sat alvo games were at 4pm. I still have a Parra/Wests game on tape. Most of the time Andrew Voss was commentator for some reason.

I remember a few times there were two Friday night games, one covered by Optus, the other on Ch 9. If you didnt have Optus and were an ARL supporter you were missing heaps. Luckily I used to pop around to a mates place who did have Optus.

As far as Super League goes, all I know is that is was shared between Fox/Ch 9 and ABC.

I remember the Super League Grand Final, probably the only SL game I watched mostly. It was on Foxtel and Ch9 at the same time.

Nah, Friday and Monday night matches were definately 9.30pm for that season, not sure of the exact reason. Returned to 8.30pm Fridays the following year.

Yep, I remember when Ch9 gave ABC the rights for the 3rd Ashes Test at Old Trafford. Brought back a lot of great memories (especially, since I'm a Knights supporter) from 1997, ParraFan. Back then, the game was very different. No video refs (in the ARL comp), ingoal touch judges, no stoppages for players injured on the field (eg '97 GF). Dunno if you say the game was a lot better back then or not, but there wasn't all the scrutiny on refs back then than there is now.

And in regards to Optus, I didn't need to worry about it. Even though PayTV wasn't available in the Hunter back then, us Knights supporters in the Hunter got to watch all Knights games that weren't on Ch9 (via NBN through their own coverage and commentary, or Optus').

But as a then 10 year old, I always remember when Terry Kennedy use to call for Optus. hahahha! Loved it when he said, 'O'Davis, O'Davis, O'DAVISS! It's TRY TIME!!!!!' and pronounced Adam Muir's surname as "Meeeeewwwwwwr".

Haha! Adam 'Myorr' ... as a 16 year old, I always cracked up at that.

In Perth, all we had in 1997 was SuperLeague coverage. Only ARL games were the 3 State Of Origin games, and I believe the Grand Final. Due to there being no coverage of the ARL Finals Series that year plus Ch9 telling me they weren't broadcasting the GF, when the Knights made the Grand Final, the following day, flights were booked and GF tickets bought ... I was off to NSW for the game! I found out later that night (after the Grand Final) that Ch9 Perth caved in and showed the game live afterall.
I wouldn't trade my seat at the game for the spot on my couch in Perth though ... not for anything!

I've gone off track here. I apologise!

I have most tapes of Knights games from 1997 as my grandfather used to tape the games and send them across here for Dad & I to watch. I know some were from Ch9, some from Optus Vision, and the odd one from NBN ... all recorded from NBN. They used to broadcast every Knights game regardless of whether Ch9 did or not. I have at least one game from 1994 of Monday Knight Football which was the Round 1 game Knights vs. Souths (Joey's first run on game) from the Sunday or Saturday that weekend. It wasn't a Ch9 or ABC game, so NBN did it, and they broadcast them on Monday nights.

TK would struggle with the name Ben Brown.
The man has No f**king Clue when it comes to sports stars names. My favourite is Costa Zoo. How he maintained a job in the media baffles me as much as how Labor governs all of Australia is state and federal politics.
