How the hell do they work out quarterback ratings?? Is there a forumla they use?? Or is it more of a subjective thing. Anyone have any ideas, I've always wanted to know this.

There is a way they do it and it is rather silly but if I look in a book I've got at home I'll bring it in and put down the method for it.

yeh it is really complex, but its tradition.

The best you can get is 158.3

the worst is 0

It takes into consideration: passing yards, touchdowns, intercepts, and completions/incompletions.

So if a QB with 3 completions and 40 yards gets a TD that QB will have a better rating than a QB with 6 completions 35 yards and a TD.

Basically, the more you do per pass, the better.

I know thats realllllllly confusing what i just wrote, but its hard to explain.

There was talk last year that a new system was being considered to incorporate the increasing trend of scrambling Quarterbacks. The current system only looks at passing and not any of the rushing efforts of a QB and therefore QB's like Manning and Bulger who generally dont run are more suited to the rating system.

i have to say that i like pocket QB's rather than scrambling QB's but i wouldnt mind them incorporating the scrambling idea into the rating system. it would mean QB's like plummer and Culpepper would get better ratings for the extra effort of running the ball which alot of QB's find hard to do.

yeh im torn on the idea, I like the current system as it is a really great way of judging how a QB went, but the trend is changing away from pocket QB's so it may be time to look at a new system.

I dont think it will change though.

It is unbelievably complex, and you have to wonder how much time was wasted trying to figure it out, but as SHAGMOP says, it works!

well unless they find something that works as well as this one (which wont be easy to come by) they will keep using this one. the only reason they would change it would be to include scrambling QBs like paullyboy said

Pass rating is JUST THAT, PASS RATING, its not meant for (scrambling running QB`s as such) its for pro-to-typical passing QUARTERBACKS, and will stay that way for another 25 years. LOL.!

The role of the Quarterback is changing whether you like it or not, the tendency of a pocket QB is well and truely on the decline and scrambling QB's are the way of the future due to faster defensive players in the modern game.

So merely looking at the passing of a QB is soon going to be inefficient.

well the QB rating which is wat is the topic of discussion is about how the QB plays throughout the season. origionally it was done to rate how they passed (which is orgionally all they did), but as paullyboy said, the scrambling QB is quickly moving in as prime QB style which means the old system doesnt really reflect on a QB's rushing skills which nowdays can be the difference between a good QB and a great one.
