Hayne was still just 18 when he got a run, people were most unhappy when he was being left out for Sideshow who was playing dreadful. Smith had no problem bringing in a young bloke when he thought they were ready or good enough. it was was one of his strengths as a coach, how many of the Roosters GF winning side from last year did he bring through and blood???

One of my favourite seasons of being an Eels fan was in 2000 when Smith brought through the baby Eels, nearly went all the way only to be beaten by a Bronco's side bulging with with Ken Talbot goodies.........

Young Gun Re-Signs with the Eels

Thu 24th July, 05:00PM

The Dyldam Parramatta Eels are excited to announce second-rower Tepai Moeroa has re-signed with the club for an additional three seasons.

A local junior and an Australian Schoolboy representative in both rugby league and union, 18-year-old Moeroa will proudly pull on the Blue and Gold jersey until at least the end of 2017.

“I’ve always played for Parramatta, and it never really crossed my mind to leave,” Tepai said.

“The group of boys here is really great and it’s like family, and Brad [Arthur] has helped me become a better player, so I’m looking forward to the next three years.”

“Tepai is obviously a very talented player, but to make his first grade debut at just 18 also shows a lot of dedication and hard work,” Parramatta Head Coach Brad Arthur said.

“He’s got a great work ethic, trains hard and has a bright future with the club, and I look forward to working with him over the next few years.”

Parramatta Eels CEO Scott Seward says it’s a great sign to have a player of Tepai’s talent choose to stay with his junior club.

“Tepai is one of many talented local juniors who are coming through the ranks of our club, and to have him locked into the Eels until 2017 shows we’re serious about holding onto our young prospects,” Eels CEO Scott Seward said.

“For Tepai to want to stay here at Parramatta when there were offers from elsewhere is a sign of the big things to come at our club.”

Moeroa made his debut due to our injury toll, but gee I reckon the way he has played he has to be in our top 3 back rowers now (with Manu, Edwards )

There is just something about this kid, he so strong for his age, and looks very comfortable out there.

It was his defence that impressed at first, but gee I reckon his running game is really improving. If he has a offload, gee he is going to be dangerous in the coming years.

Yes he does have areas to improve but I really can't see this kid playing under 20's again and is now a regular for our top 17.

Definitely a highlight for the year.

What do others think?

I wasn't a Joseph Paulo fan but he was our best half tonight. I say:

6. Paulo
7. Sandow

11. Edwards
12. Mau
13. Moeroa

Overall he has been excellent.
He does have the odd lapse in defence though (I guess most players do).
Tonight for example he got caught out in Vaughn's (?) try. Just moved up out of the line and watched the ball go past him.

As for the others who would make up out 'top 3' backrowers:

Edwards can be an absolute mad merkin in attack, like tonight, but has games where you don't even notice him playing. Can miss a tackle or 4 as well.

Ma'u is a strong runner with a decent offload and can hit hard in defence. Was having a great year up until his injury. I'll have to see some more of him though.

Gower is a solid player. Makes good hitups. Tackles well. Has a decent pass before the line and offload in the tackle. He is probably in our top 3 backrowers personally.

Would you have Tepai or Edwards playing in the middle?
Moeroa seems to be a natural edge player.

I'd probably have Ma'u and Moeroa starting on the edges with Gower playing in the middle.
Edwards off the bench.

The only players of this year that would get a start somewhere else in a top 8 side:

Morea
hayne
peats
Sandow cause there arent many halves.

Thats it.

Yeah, but I really think he didn't crab that much this year. Norman on the other hand has taken the most infuriating player to support award away from Sandow, but not by much.
