Yeh that's how I read it.
I was just wondering if I've missed something.
Would you prefer Sione over Bateman?
Sione is cheaper and has more of a future, but still would cost if we're throwing in a gazillion to offload Bud and pay some of Bateman's contracts.....it's a nightmare to workout the dollars and cents.
Best to have depth if we have the space.
Blokes like Bateman and Klemmer may improve with a bit of a team upgrade.
Bateman was trying to do everything but he's too small to do any middle stuff when required. Because he has to go all in against bigger bodies his adrenalin causes errors and dumb sin bin stuff.
Weren’t Manly wanting Bateman, that story has gone a cold atm.

That was the last reported thing. The fact May's deal went thru so quickly it seems like another announcement will come by Friday arvo.
Bateman goes then Sione Fainu gets a new contract.

I want us to sign Sione but I hear your point on Bateman. I also think we lack edge forwards.

It's a tough one.

I'm not up all the types of contracts available, but I wonder if he can be put on a development contract or some other one, there seems to a few options?
You would think they would want to keep him, he's not a bad player and would help keep his brothers pacified?

I think we already have 5 on dev contracts and I don't think we can sign anymore.

Tim Johannssen
Reuben Porter
Heath Mason
Solomona Faataape
Makasini

That is an unreal list of dev players though. I'd be surprised if there are a better bunch of players in the league on those contracts.

In stating that we have a bunch of guys we could let go:-

Doueihi
Tumeth
Bateman
Sullivan
Solomone Saukuru
Feledy
Naden
Staines
Maybe even To'a.

I think Staines and To'a are first graders without many flaws. Bateman and Sullivan may offer another club a good option but they are on top dollar. Doueihi is great 5% of the time he is on the field.

A club can have up to 6 development players and it was a system to allow a pathways player to transition into NRL. Whilst they can't play in the NRL till Rd 10 or 11 (forgot now but they are eligible for magic rd) they can still train with the big boys.
I don't know if dropping Bateman back to a development contract is either ethical (denying pathway players opportunities) or allowable. I probably am wrong as usual.
Then there's the nrl contract he's on so he would be sitting out nearly half the season whilst we're paying him big bucks. He can't have two contracts.
The club could pay out his NRL contract, or if it expires, he could come back in as a train and trial player....Grub did that a couple of years ago when he wanted to play for the dogs but there were no spots left. This kind of contract pays peanuts.
Whatever happens, we would either want him to mutually agree to go our separate ways to free up a spot or if he stays play like a marquee player that he's being paid for.
In the last scenario, both Benji and Bateman need to swallow their pride and get down business. Make it work!

How do they know that May's contract is that amount ?

I'd add that my understanding was that we were offering Stef 800k. Melbourne paid less because they rort the cap.
Mate a lot of crap is generated by managers yapping, then a few red nose journalists get a hold of it and throw it around whilst drinking a few schooners at their local after which social media cut and paste....then zazam the magical figure is set.
I don't see what the fuss is about declaring contracts.
Jobs outside of footy, you know, the real world, often advertise a vacant position and list the salary.
These glorified sports people think they are above us common folk maybe?
