An Australian rugby league player charged with the assault of two men outside an eastern suburbs hotel on Saturday will keep his place in the Kangaroo touring squad which leaves for Britain today.
Terry Hill, 22, a Manly first grade centre, was charged with two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm at Paddington police station yesterday
The Australian Rugby League (ARL) executive chairman, Mr Ken Arthurson, admitted last night that he sought legal advice before deciding to allow Hill to leave on the Kangaroo tour of Britain and France.
The ARL decided that Hill would be allowed to join the squad to tour Great Britain and France, but not before lengthy discussions took place.
"I thought long and hard about whether to pull Terry out of the tour," Mr Arthurson said.
"I spoke with a lot of people, spoke to the (ARL) board, and have taken legal advice on the matter.
"I don't suppose it would look too good if we did pull him out of the tour, and subsequently he was cleared when the hearing came up in late December.
"We must treat Terry as any other Australian citizen, in that he is entitled to be innocent until proven otherwise.
"I did speak to Terry Hill today and he vigorously denied it.
"He was greatly upset and disturbed about the matter.
"So the entire squad is on their toes."
The charges against Hill relate to the alleged assault of an ABC radio producer, Mr Tony Twiss, and his friend near the Woollahra Hotel about 10 pm on Saturday.
The ARL chief executive, Mr John Quayle, said yesterday that Hill had denied the allegation to the League and police, and had made it quite clear he would vigorously defend the charges.
"As an Australian citizen, and under our law, Mr Hill is entitled to the presumption of innocence," Mr Quayle said.
"He is innocent until proven otherwise and will be leaving with the Australian team tomorrow."
A police spokeswoman said Hill arrived at Paddington police station with a solicitor early yesterday where he was formally charged.
The spokeswoman said Hill denied he had done anything wrong.
He had declined to be interviewed by detectives.
Outside the station, his solicitor, Mr Colin Love, said Hill would be"vigorously defending these allegations".
"He doesn't believe in trial by media," Mr Love said.
Hill was granted unconditional bail to appear at Waverley Local Court on December 21.
