First things first, the captaincy. Paine was always a stop gap filling in the vacuum after the SA debacle. Now he's a debacle himself.
So who takes over? Smith? Does he want it? He's proved that he's lacked leadership, has anything changed?
Cummins? He's already overburdened and you can see that his rise to the best bowler in the world has reduced his batting abilities. I don't want to see his bowling suffer because he's the only alternative.
Head was the most likely but his batting is not up to scratch and he needs to concentrate on that just to get back in the team.
Lyon? He won't be dropped despite his poor performances lately so he might be an alternative as he seems to have a good, albeit ugly, cricket head on his shoulders.
Labuschagne? Too weird and inexperienced and weird.
The only other alternatives out there are Khawaja who was dropped for poor form (much like Head, playing lazy shots when in) who looks like his days in the green cap are over. Then you've got the Marsh brothers and we'll end the discussion there.
All that considered I have no idea except they won't push Paine, unless he retires we're stuck with him
