Thailand Rugby League Determines Pathway

It looks like these guys are going about things well in Thailand and the right way as well in developing the game at grassroots level and building from the bottom up. I look forward to seeing the progression of Rugby League in Thailand and another nation we can add to the growing list of playing nations.

The first Board Meeting held outside Bangkok was held today in Pattaya and the battleplans for developing the game in the Kingdom were drawn.

“The meeting was a great success and we are very happy to be working together to bring the great game of Rugby League to the Kingdom.” said Shannon Crane, Chairman of TRL Thai Rugby League. “We have established our Pattaya Office as part of this meeting and have formulated the steps required to ensure success when the TRL Domestic Competition kicks off in 2014.”

The plans include an identification and registration process for Thai National players in other jurisdictions, the creation of 2 schoolboy competitions to be held in Pattaya in 2013 and the goal to enter qualification for the 2017 World Cup with the view of making the 2021 tournament.

“We have assembled a very strong case for both the IRLF and the APRLC. We are looking forward to their support in the grassroots development of the game in the Kingdom and their sanction to provide clarity for players entertaining playing the game in the Kingdom.”

They have big plans with an intital 6 team comp in 2014 with an adittional 2 clubs to come in in 2015.

Big plans and I wish them well in their endeavours but at least they are giving themselves a fair bit of time for it to come to fruition.

Talks between the Thai Rugby League and a major Thai brand are well underway with the announcement only weeks away.

“We started discussions earlier this year and we have via a strong contact within this organisation been able to sit down and discuss the vision we have for Rugby League in the Kingdom” said Shannon Crane, Founder and Chairman of Thai Rugby League.

“This deal will be backended so the risk was extremely low to the company in year one but we will see the revenue required to expand over the next 8 years to be played in both schools and Universities and a local presence in the Thai National Rugby League Premiership.”

“With 6 teams locked in for TRL I in 2014 and 8 teams for TRL II in 2015 we are looking to expand at a two team per annum basis in 2016 through to 2017 culminating in a 12 team national competition. This has taken almost 2 years to get to this point and we are excited that a Thai brand can see the potential going forward.”

“I am currently in Australia and after this weekend’s NRL Grand Final I will return to Bangkok to continue working through the details. We are hoping to make the announcement in January 2013.”

I believe this is a separate organisation to the Thai RL that organised the Thai national team to play the Philippines in Bangkok.

I am not sure which one is recognised by the RLIF, but the Thailand vs Philippines match played on 21st October was endorsed by the RLIF and even had the RLIF logo on the 'Asia Cup' troply.

You mean they've been going two minutes and there's already two organisations running RL in Thailand? What took them so long?

Haha, I'm just waiting for the day when we have 3 or 4 different organisations running the game in some countries, it'll happen, you watch.

Anyway, good luck to Thailand Rugby League.

Why would that be a good thing? Was it a good thing when two organisations ran the game here? (Only two. Imagine if there had been three or four).

Parra,

I have contributed as much as I can to this wonderful thread, for the time being. I will just have to wait until..........2014, I suppose. Check back with me then, I might have something more to say.

It was only a few weeks ago I thought this venture has whittled away but just listening to the radio interview these guys are very serious about it and it seems like they have thought the process out well. For anyone who hasn't listened to the interview it's at the 15min mark.

Here's a link to their TV commercial that's going to be shown during a festival of RL they are hosting:
