That Patrick Smith bloke is a bit of a twat

How about giving an opinion on the article perhaps, instead of your usual thinly veiled pro-AFL garbage.

He's using lies to create a negative opinion of RL. Twat.

This particular article is sh*t!

I'm neither pro or anti AFL, quite neutral about it in fact. Of course not being rabidly anti AFL is a crime according to most posters here.

I think its funny that I get more AFL news from a league forum than from anywhere else. Are some of you a touch paranoid about it?

I love reading The Australian, it is a great paper that doesn't insult my intelligence or come off as a printed version of Today Tonight or ACA. This guy Smith paints himself as the print version of Darren Hinch: all talk with no substance. He has spent the last week campaigning against jumps racing as some kind of standard barer for their cause.

He is Victorian, so his articles always have a Victorian edge and with the exception of the last week, always seem to relate to the AFL's superiority over all other sports in Australia. In relation to today's piece, he has written it as such to show he is right no matter what happens Wednesday night. If there is a punch up, Rugby League is a game for thugs that families "obviously" will flock away from in the northern states right into the arms of the family friendly AFL. If there is no fights, then he comes off as showing that Rugby League is trying to change into a safe friendly sport in a direct copy of the AFL.

At the end of the day, it is a throw away opinion piece hiding in the sports section. Tomorrow he will have another piece, either again on the State of Origin or some fluff piece on the AFL. Unless something happens again in jumps racing - must have lost a mint on a "sure thing" I reckon.

Not really the place to ask but I can't seem to PM you. I notice when you go to tribe13.com.au and click onto another page your adress bar messes up.

Then your web adress should be fixed and more professional. Rather than having the .wordpress in the links

:sarcasm::sarcasm::crazy:

Thanks RugbyHighlights. Not sure why the PM isn't working. The domain-mapping option you suggested doesn't appear to be available in the free Wordpress version. But, you're right, it would be more professional & the upgrade isn't much $.
cheers

This Patrick Smith (whoever he is) sure has displayed "imaginaton" and "superior ball handling skills" in writing this article.

 Could have closed the thread there imo.

Reckon this theory that the AFL will appeal to mothers who don't want to see their children playing a full contact sport is complete garbage too. Soccer has had that market cornered for years and AFL won't break through that. It's not enticing those that like a competetive game that's good to watch by watering down the contact rules either.

Haha you know what maybe I'm biased but I'm going to say that is a well-argued piece concerning what is lacking in an AFL contest backed up by evidence and solid comparison.

You're right - anyone who reasons that Melb/Aust rules was rejected by NSW/QLD on the back of an allegedly rampant anti-Victorian sentiment is not looking very deeply.

indeed, I suspect the 18 couples who make up a game of AFL could well play without a football for quite some time before anyone even noticed it was missing
Thanks Sean...i put that in my sig..
It's funny because it's true.

Poor Fat Pat, Flogball has nothing to compete with the great spectacle that is Origin so they have to bag it. The most action that occurs in a game of Tardball occurs in the Boggers aftet the game.

AFL is full of plays straight out of the Dog Act (NSW 1920).

Barry Hall ties his shoe and gets pushed over in the process. Barry Hall should have bashed that spastic.

Then in the same FoxSports footage there's another belter deliberately bashing the arm of a guy just returning from a broken arm. Real quality that my wife wants our kid involved with. When a guy like Danny Williams does a Dog Act we erase him from the game while the Victorian's call in gamesmanship and maybe you'll cop a week.

The cultures of NSW/Qld when compared to Victoria are very different.

What they call gamesmanship, we up here in NSW and in Qld put it into the Low Dog category. What we in NSW and Qld call man to man, toe to toe, fair fight bring back the biffo type stuff that shows your passion, they in Victoria are outraged by this as primitive neanderthal type behaviour.

The more I watch AFL, the more I see it is filled with sneaky dogs who would rather attack you from behind like a gutless hyena. Little wonder we don't see their kind being brought into our code of gladiators.

Hockey, Gridiron, Boxing, UFC, Union and League are all pretty famous sports that involve violence.

The kind of violence on the streets this guy is on about is the gutless acts of hitting a turned away bloke from behind before he cracks his head open on the concrete.....

Sound familiar??? like the attitude your AFL game revolves around?????.... Cheap shots and blindsiding blokes who aren't even in the contest for the ball.

At least when violence occurs in the originally mentioned sports it is in the contest or 9/10 the bloke is aware of it happening and agree to the possibility of it happening by playing the sport.

Patrick Smith is a troll, plain and simple, nothing more. He's sucked you all in with a classic piece of gratuitous, inflammatory trollbait. That's all he's good for. He's pretty good at it though, this thread is proof of that.

The St Kilda player who did his shoulder in and while he was down in back play a couple of Lions players slammed him just to make sure.

Sure the kid cried like a baby in the stands afterwards but that sh*t is cowardly.

I've played a little bit of the game and yes, it is hard to play and yes you need to be fit. But the sh*t that goes on behind play is unbelievable. In the lower grades when you only have 1 field umpire you see some nasty stuff happen off the ball.

At least in the rugby codes you can't belt someone if they don't have the ball and if you do, you're in strife.

Hitting someone from the side when they aren't looking or don't have the ball isn't a skill. It's cowardly.

:lol::lol:

Courage is kneeing people in the back?

Superior ball handling skills is crawling along the ground like tramps looking for a 5 cent piece?

Imagination is kicking a ball wide of the goal and wishing you scored but being content in the knowledge you got a point for missing but keep dreaming sonny, you'll get one next time?

This Patrick Smith (whoever he is) sure has displayed "imaginaton" and "superior ball handling skills" in writing this article.

You could throw "courage" in as well given the laughs it will bring but I'm sure that's unintentional.

Class post.

wtf is this s*** , who is this monkey ?

I introduced my girl to League and she absolutly loves it (She was one of those hates all Sport with a passion chick). I flcked on the AFL once to try and find a league game and she made me explain the AFL rules to her. After watching it for about 1 min she told me the game was messy looking and the players seem very feminine lol.

thats funny. My missus asked why they all have "hair-do's"...

Apparently the afl played their biggest game of the regular season last week when premiers Geelong played the world famous Collingwood.

Did anyone in NSW and QLD care?

No

Did anyone in NSW and QLD watch?

Maybe 50 000

Did any journos in NSW and QLD write articles about it?

You must be joking!

I was just looking for that video. He had a broken collar bone and they barged into him as he went off the field.
I think the difference between AFL and League is that players are allowed to defend themselves in League. In AFL you get kneed in the back of the head and it's called a 'speccie'.

As i said before if Rugby League could continue with using AFL style marking(ala Folau) and kicking (Merritt)in the game then iam sure Rugby League can gain more in Australia then Aussie Rules can with alot more to offer as i can see the AFL bringing try's or touchdowns lol.
