The 2020 Shopping List

Buying some blokes with some bloody ticker would be a good way to go. Look at Gower the other night, a heap of players in our squad are better players than him but he gets by by having a red hot crack every time he pulls on the jersey. If someone like Evans did that he would be a fantastic player. Christian Welch fits the bill imo.
And that's why Welch was earmarked 12 months ago as a potential - because he was seen as a possible leader in our pack.

Why should our shopping list just be off contract players?

James Roberts, Kodi Nikorima, Josh McGuire, Jordan Kahu, John Bateman, David Klemmer, Shaun Johnson, Dylan Napa, Trent Merrin have all changed clubs in the last 9 months and none were off contract at the time. All are Origin level or Tier 1 Nation Rep level. DWZ is theoretically about to join the group.

According to the fb sea of rumours - Welch has signed with the bulldogs and will be announced this week. For a club apparently on the cap for this year and next it’s a great pickup if true.

We earmarked Welch but we didn’t speak to him. Oh well small steps.

And do Storm forwards really do well out of that system and away from Cameron Smith???

I'd be making some discreet inquiries regarding JWH. One thing we lack is an intimidating forward leader. He would solve that.

Off to Panthers
Surely we could sneak in, sell him how much we need him, our new stadium, etc. I don’t think individually he’s still near top but I reckon he’d be one of the best at getting our other forwards playing like they did Friday, every week

Leeds have confirmed captain Kallum Watkins will leave the club at the end of the 2019 Super League season after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract.

Watkins has spent his entire career at the Rhinos having made his debut as a 17-year-old and is in eleventh season at the club.

The England international had two years remaining on the four-year contract he signed in 2018 but, through discussions with chief executive Gary Hetherington, he has agreed to come out of the contract this year.

Rhinos director of rugby Kevin Sinfield said: “First and foremost, I would like to thank Kallum for his outstanding service to the club and, in particular, his complete professionalism throughout this process.

“Kallum is aware of our plans for the squad moving forward and the restrictions that the salary cap has on our ability to develop this group of players.

“Kallum is one of the greatest talents this club has produced, and I know he will be giving his absolute all for the remainder of the season to make sure he finishes his time here on the best possible note.”

Watkins commented: “This was an incredibly tough decision for me to arrive at especially as I was happy to remain at the club for the remainder of my contract.

“However, this is an agreement that suits myself and the club. I am 28 and looking forward to a new challenge whether in Super League or abroad and I wish the club all the best for the years ahead.”

Kallum has always been a stand out attacking player over there, he also kicks goals. Not sure we need a centre really, especially one that's going to not be value for money. I reckon Ethan Parry will be ready for fairly regular first grade next year, plus we could be re-signing Jennings and we also have the option of playing Salmon in the centres.

Well IF we don’t resign Mennings, he’s at least an option
