The best Overseas Grog/Alcohol

Messages

I've been doing a bit of experimenting these last few months with different types of ways to get drunk rather than having Beer, Wine or Spirits.
I've recently tried Kava and after persisting with the vulgar muddy water taste i actually didn't mind the relaxing non groggy head feeling..

Then i tried Saki. Both the Australian and Japanese. The aussie one was better..

I then had another weekend at trying this dark brown Masadonian scotch looking drink, that was cruel indeed..

Has anyone got any potato alcohol stories or any other drinks from around the world to aid in my quest for a different alcohol. i'm not after russian vodka or italian sambuca stories.. Just traditional non mainstream / commerical types..

Te Puke thunder !!

an ounce of *&^%, boiled up for about an hour, add 2 kgs sugar, bit of yeast and let it sit for a couple of weeks, then bottle it, let it sit for a couple more and then sample....

very different.

I went to a Serbian funeral once and they handed round nips of slivavitz - which is apparently home made by Serbians because the alcohol content is illegal in this country - i think around 70 or 80%.
It is made from plums.
It is very hard to keep down, and you are drunk within a few minutes of having a few nips.
After a nip you smash the glass against the wall.
I think the knives and guns come out once the bottle is done.
Serbian funerals are great fun.

i know you're not really after spirits but fiji bounty rum is worth a try !!
otherwise just stick to the kava i say. and i would advise against mixing kava and alcohol

Is there anything to mix with Kava to take away that foul taste?

I've wondered if cordial or something like that would take the mud taste away..

Try some absinthe ... i recommend French style Absinthe as it tastes better than Czech Absinth (note no "e" in Czech stuff as it doesnt contain anise).

Here is a video on how to prepare it (note its extremely strong and i dont recommend you drink it straight). http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=40k7SkXi3Rc

I have this Spanish Absinthe atm ... 70% alcohol and burns the crap out of your throat if you drink it straight.

The Czech way of drinking it is fun too ... the only difference from the French way is to pour the alcohol over the sugar cube and setting it alight first, before dripping the water over it after the flame has gone out.

Nothing I've tried from Korea has set the world afire. Soju is like a cheaper, nastier vodka. Beer here is generally pretty week. I've yet to try their rice wines.

I've fallen in love with Crown Royal in my time here, which is a damn fine drink if you're a fan of Canadian Club. Nothing exotic, but a smooth drink.

I'm not sure. I'm not paying any more for it here than I am for Crown (about $7 for a glass, which is not remarkable for spirits here).

There is a Dutch spirit, you can buy it here. I can't remember the name of it but it comes in an Earthenware jug. Tastes like sh!t but it will absolutely blow your head off. Also if you know any Lebanese people, they make their own spirit. Can't pronounce it and wouldn't have a clue how to type it but I'll give it a shot, sounds something like "urret" (pronounced like turret but without the "t"). it tastes a bit like black Sambuca. You can drink it straight but I don't recommend it. It is clear in the bottle but the lebanese mix it with water and it goes cloudy. This will also blow your head off, but if you mix it with water it is not a bad drink. Also very good to rub on Mosquito bite's as it takes away the itch. (I Sh!t you not!)

Apart from that, I have tried a number of Swedish beers when I have been over there and I don't recommend any of them, as they are rather weak but the schnaps there is awesome. When I was in London last, I was persuaded to drink this cider called Magners, it was ok. Better than all the warm English beers, that is for sure.

yeah magners is a good cider. (called bulmers in republic of ireland).

Is it possible to get kava in Australia these days since the government changed the import laws?

If you went to one of those islander shops they may have it out back..

I got mine brought over from Fiji, i'd love to know how to take away the mud taste because the relaxed feeling is freaking better than being drunk..

Can you buy it over in Aus? I'm probably gonna move in the next year or so ... don't know what I will do if I can't drink Tui over there!
