Being a former computing student and now software dev...I know some people who are a little too Sheldon-like...makes it funnier...

i enjoy it, but i used to enjoy it a lot more. they're running a lot of the jokes right into the ground now. it's still watchable, though. certainly a refreshing sitcom.

You would have to be pretty dumb not to get it. That's the reason it's so succesful, it can be appreciated by anybody

Completely agree. But people who love the show seem to like using it as a comeback when confronted with people who don't rate it (on this very forum too).

It actually is extremely intelligent in some ways, as in some of the physics they get into on the show would be well above about 99.5% of the world population's head (I am including myself in that btw)

The humour is no more intelligent than any other sitcom though.

The way they portray Barney as a legend for being a dickhead to women is sickening. And he is also a whiny bitch.

They don't.

He's a desperate soulless weed who's obviously got daddy issues. That's how he's portrayed on the show.

there is humour at every level in the show - which is why it's successful. there are nerd jokes in there that would go over the laymans head (and if you don't think that there are, then you're a closet nerd and got them or you missed the jokes... and this isn't just talking about intelligence levels, but also nerd and gaming culture, too). this is particularly true of earlier seasons. there is also plenty of relatable humour for most anybody else watching the show, too... right up to and including "i don't really understand what is going on, but LOL@NERDS".

for example - what percentage of the population do you think understood the Doppler Effect joke, immediately when Sheldon was dressed as it? then how many when he tried to actually explain it to the party-goers in that episode? i'd wager there are people that have seen that episode that still don't know what the Doppler Effect is, even after Sheldon explaining it in plain english.

Kaley Cuoco is also very easy on the eyes.

Compared to Lorre's other effort (Two and a Half Men), Big Bang Theory is leagues ahead. It might not be quite as intelligent in its jokes as shows like Community or Arrested Development, but the fact it manages to tread a line bewteen conventional sitcom while also catering to nerds of all varieties speaks volumes for the talent of its writers.

Jim Parsons is right up there with Bryan Cranston as an actor I admire for his uncanny portrayal of his character, and the rest of the cast do a fine job. If anything - the weakest link is Kaley Cuoco, who I've never found particularly attractive or amusing. Give me Bernadette any day. Rwar!

she's got a sort of weird face, i can see where he's coming from. i think she's absolutely stunning, but in a girl-next-door kind of way. she plays her role in the show really well, imo... and is well cast in it, too.

I think some people would rate her less if she wasn't famous for playing a hot female living close by to a bunch of nerds... personally, not a fan of her face much at all, but the rest of her is niiiiiiiiiice.

I youtubed the bit you were talking about, and I'm not sure you would need to understand the Doppler Effect to laugh at the joke. Most of the jokes are just, as you say, lolling at nerds, despite the references to ideas and theories that the average viewer may not fully understand.
