The Breakdown With Matt Elliot

Clearly the bloke is just not a man manager. Love hearing him speak on league though.

I would imagine he'd be great on a coaching staff handling the technical stuff and having little to no contact with the playing group itself.

Meninga has shown that you can be a good man manager and be shit technically to get a head coach gig (albeit 3 games a year).

What do you think about Joey being shown the door as halves coach at Manly? I have no idea what to think about it. I'm curious as to Barrett's logic though.

"If we pause the footage... oh... look at that... oh... just so nice. Roll the footage... pause it there and watch this... oh... look at that... oh... "

Haha. What do the callers say to him? Is Elliot a fan of scrums?

Every weekend someone will call in and complain about modern day scrums. He is just sick of hearing it but hates Rugby scrums and scrum penalties and so on. Always ends up arguing with them and you can hear the rest of the team laughing in the background. He basically starts every week by saying 'Please please please do NOT ring up about scrums' then some old codger will inevitably do so.

Sterlo is still a good analyst, he'll actually tell you why the defence is working or not working, why the attack is working or not working.

I enjoy Elliiot's commentary on the ABC. He and Andrew Moore have developed in to a good duo. Even Andrew Ryan has come on leaps and bounds - he no longer uses the word "outstanding" in every sentence like he used to when he first started.

I might have missed it, but what happened to Mick Crocker? He was co caller with Moore at the start of the season with Elliot on the sideline, but now Elliot is in the box with Moore and Bobcat on the sideline. Did Crocker get rissoled?

If he and Moore are on next season I'll listen to ABC more often

Canberra, Penrith and Warriors, each time he got sacked from those gigs, players and staff spoken openly about how complicated his teaching methods were. From all reports the players all liked him and respected him but they could never understand what he was trying to get them to do, he lost them in the minutiae of his intricate defensive systems and game plans.

I think you're right. He's got a role to play in a coaching staff, as an assistant doing work on the video and identifying weaknesses in the opposition but he needs a conduit between him and the players to be able to clean it up and simplify the instructions.

I think it was just a case of new coach, new philosophy.

There was a lot of political.shit that went on with staff at the end of last season, but I think Barrett simply figured he could provide the mentoring to the halves.

Of course, could be completely wrong.

Had heard rumours that at least one of the halves (if not both) had some sort of issue with Johns, but who bloody knows.....

Hmph. Joey said something this week actually of Fox about how Foran did a lot of the organising for Daly. It would take a pretty big ego to challenges Johns' advice when it comes to halves play. Barretts's mentioning hasn't done much judging by last week. That was the key point of Elliot's episode this week ("lack of continuity"), actually. Maybe Barrett doesn't like Johns because he was so much better than than him. I bet Johns has a nice smug laugh watching the Dogz game heh

For what it's worth I never waste my time watching any pre-game/post-game analysis, nor do I watch any of the footy shows. Never read RL magazines or delve into this fantasy shit, never bet and rarely tip teams to win or lose with confidence. All this because I don't think anyone can tell me what I can't see for myself and my sense of humour is too finely tuned to sit through anything but the best of Hindy & Fletch on UTube

Big f**king deal you may say, however since being alerted to Elliot's Breakdown by this thread even my conceitedness won't stop me from watching again . . . I like the straight to the point common sense of it

"The Breakdown with Matt Elliot" - pretty accurate description of what happens to fans when he coaches their team.

He is quite good to listen to, though.

Ah, so you're another one who has declared Manly are done for the year and Barrett can't coach based on one game.

Manly missed the 8 last year with Johns as halves coach. I assume that means he can't coach either? Maybe that's why Barrett punted him

No I'm not jumping to any conclusions. But most of us agreed that Manly had developed one of the best halves attacks in the comp under Johns. So it seemed like a strange idea to get rid of him. But hey maybe Daly didn't want Johns cramping his style at training anymore. Will be interesting to see how they bounce back tonight. Go Tigers!
