WORK on the third instalment of Guardians of the Galaxy has been put on hold a month after director James Gunn was fired.Multiple sources have told The Hollywood Reporter pre-production crew had been dismissed from the project and told to find work elsewhere.
The publication claims that Marvel and Disney are having to “regroup” on the sequel after dismissing its director Gunn in a storm of controversy.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 had been scheduled to begin pre production in a matter of weeks, with filming to commence in early 2019.
Long touted as key to Guardians of the Galaxy’s success,
Gunn was abruptly fired from the third instalment in July after tweets resurfaced of him joking about child rape.
Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn announced Gunn had been dropped from the project after an alt right campaign to get him fired, with one of the most vocal supports Mike Cernovich, a key proponent of the “Pizzagate” conspiracy theory.
Since his firing Gunn has apologised for the tweets, telling
Variety they were “failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative” and he has “regretted them for many years since”.
Following Gunn’s sacking
the film’s stars condemned his departure and confirmed they were standing by him.
Posted to Twitter and Instagram by the film’s lead star Chris Pratt the statement slammed the “court of public opinion” for having “little due process”.
“ … we hope Americans from across the political spectrum can ease up on the character assassinations and stop weaponizing mob mentality,” the letter concluded.
