The Committee

The wide ranging review of the New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) has taken a step forward with the appointment of a committee to investigate governance and administration issues.

The review has been instigated by Sparc, the Government's sports funding agency, after it grew concerned about the NZRL's financial footing.
The organisation has been struggling on a financial front and some domestic competitions are at risk due to insufficient funds.
Today, the NZRL and Sparc announced the appointment of a review committee comprising notable figures from inside and outside of rugby league.
It will be chaired by New Zealand Cricket board chairman Sir John Anderson and includes Elizabeth Coutts, a former Sparc board member, Netball New Zealand chairman Don Mackinnon, Auckland Rugby League board chairman Cameron McGregor , New Zealand Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah, Canterbury Rugby League general manager Graeme Sole, NZRL selection panel convener and Sport Taranaki chief executive Howie Tamati, and accountant Peter Wilson.
NZRL chairman Ray Haffenden said the review committee had an important job to provide guidance on how to help strengthen the organisation in areas such as governance, organisation structure and financial sustainability and management.
Sparc chairman John Wells said the work of the review committee would provide a valuable insight into where improvements could be made to build rugby league's capacity.
The committee will start work by next month and it is hoped it can present a draft report to the NZRL board in November.
The scope of the review will include consultation with NZRL directors, staff and contractors, affiliates and clubs, sponsors and partners including gaming trusts, the New Zealand Warriors, and the Australian Rugby

I liked this little snippet ... (found on NZCity)

The Government is welcoming an independent review into the financial troubles at the New Zealand Rugby League.

Sir John Anderson will head the eight-member panel which will take a look at the sport's management. The review follows concerns over mismanagement and the poor financial state of the game.

Sir John is the chairman of several companies, including TVNZ, and was appointed earlier this year as commissioner of the Hawke's Bay District Health Board.

Sports Minister Clayton Cosgrove says the Government has expressed its concern about the health and stability of rugby league, and have ordered the review. He says the code is a bedrock sport in New Zealand and it is vital the administration is as strong as possible.

The review panel will report back to the Government in November.

How did Howie get in there?

Howie? I'm more concerned that McGregor, Sole and Scurrah are there.
In fact, we're gonna have four seperate entities protecting their own patches.

Sir John "Why was Allen Vaughn given interest free loans Cameron?"
Cameron "Because he is a friend of Auckland Rugby League."
Sir John "So is the Mad Butcher and everyone else that supports rugby league in Auckland. So can anyone get these loans?"
Cameron "He did put a good word in for us when we applied for funding from the Lion Foundation which the pub he was managing was a part of."
Sir John "Oh, he scratched your back and you guys gave him some of the funding back so he could buy a pub in Greenhithe."
Cameron "Well, it's been happening for years. Just look at the loans the NZRL has given to Brent Todd, Malik Werjitne, Pearson and others."
Sir John "Gees Cameron, for an Accountant you're not that good at accountability are you?"

Sir John "Wayne, why doesn't the Warriors distribute development fees to clubs like other NRL clubs?"
Wayne "Who's gonna make us?"
Sir John "So a local club provides teams, coaches, uniforms, training etc to all your locally developed players and you give the clubs nothing in return?"
Wayne "Pretty much."
Sir John "In the animal kingdom the leech comes to mind and in the business world I think it's called a scam."
;-)

Committees run by Govt depts are usually a joke, but I'll wait and see I guess. Don't know what the hell good is going to come out of this, just wasting more money from what I can see. IMO it's pretty simple, run and set the damn thing up properly like a business and move forward. The past is gone.

...And when the hell did Cosgrove become Sports Minister?! These Ministers that shuffle along one portfolio to another and know **** all about any of them is the main reason I hate politics. And I'm not biased, I hate both sides of the house equally. To run something important in this country you just frankly brown tongue your way to the top.

Sorry, rant over.
