The haka

Ka mate! Ka mate!
Ka ora! Ka ora!
Ka mate! Ka mate!
Ka ora! Ka ora!
Tenei te tangata
puhuru huru
Nana nei i tiki mai
Whakawhiti te ra
A upa ... ne!
ka upa ... ne!
A upane kaupane
whiti te ra!
Hi !!!

TRANSLATION

I die! I die!
I live! I live!
I die! I die!
I live! I live!
This is the hairy man
Who fetched the Sun
And caused it to
shine again
One upward step!
Another upward step!
An upward step,
another ...
the Sun shines!!

i would have thought the words would have been different than that ,they don't match the dance    ;-)

Is the Kiwi RL haka the same as the All Blacks'?

I saw the RU Maori's haka live in Toronto, and it was different - longer and with different words. I liked it. They were printed in the match program.

Are every NZ team's hakas different, or all they all the same except for the Maori?

Do all NZ teams do a haka, ozbash? I recall the Tall Blacks doing it when they were in NA in 2002. Do they do one in cricket? Do women's teams do it?

Do Hawaian shirt clubs have a haka?

BTW, it's nice to get such a quick reply from an expert. ;-)

Do Hawaian shirt clubs have a haka

yes, but only at internationals

Do women's teams do it?
the new zealand womens rugby union team perform haka as do ( i think) our league girls.
netball ?- not that ive seen
hockey,soccer,cricket,, notr that ive seen..

its a funny one, the haka is primarily a war dance, performed by warrior-men.
within maori culture there is a definite pecking order in relation to gender..
women are not allowed to speak publicly on marae ( meeting house/ground) and elder maori would frown on women performing haka.

te kaha ( union forum) is pretty well up on it and he might be able to answer your questions

There was an NFL team who did a sort of war dance with their kick-off team before games last year. I don't know if they're still doing it. I saw a feature on it on tv, and the US tv showed a clip of the AB's haka as a comparison.

The NFL one looked more like an African-American, rap inspired thing though.

(Sorry for taking this thread in a direction that doesn't belong in the international RL sectin.)

When I went on a rugby tour last year we played some GIANT Maori teams, and their Hakas really intimidated me(as if i wasn't scared enough already).

Rotorua High School did the best one. Napier High was pretty good.

one school, Upper Hutt College, did this weird one where they got on the ground and beat the dirt with their fists.

It really does intimidate you.

Didn't the aussies have some sort of 'haka' or war dance?

Yeah there used to one, can't remember what it was called but they used to do it in the Kangaroo tours and it stopped on the 1967 tour. There was some of sort petition to bring it back, but I doubt they would, though it'll be interesting to see it once again.

The NSW Wairere Maori's done a haka similar to that at the Pacifica Tournament.
Result?
One player broke his wrist and took no further part in the tournament!

Ka mate is the traditonional Haka of new Zealand sports teams. It was written by Te Raperaha of the mighty Ngati Toa... it was written about him self when he hid from his enemies and escaped certain death.

It was first used by The All Blacks when they went overseas.... It was also adopted by the kiwis and subsequently other sports teams in the last 20 years.. tho the Softballers have been doing it for years.

In the last few years the All Balcks in consultation with ka matua have slightly changed hte actions to more refect the words.....

The different schools all have there own haka, and some of them are well over 100 years old and havent changed in that time. it is truely awe inspiring to see the opposing banks at a game filled with students doing there school haka at the same time... Rotorua Boys and te aute college are two of the best for that.

yeah, pretty much what Te Kaha has said.
except it was created by Te Rauparaha and yeah the AB's had Kaumatua to refine the actions to it.
The Maori Haka i think is called 'Te Timatanga' which translates to 'The Begining'.
The Womens Haka are special Haka made for Woman as there not allowed to perform the types that males do. Its more Pukana and Wiri without the beating of the chest and squating down.
something that really annoy's me is when the All Blacks and Kiwis jump after the end. thats something you dont do, you just Pukana.

The Australian haka was a regular fixture during the early Kangaroo forums. I believe the inspiration was taken from the indigenous peoples of the Moreton Bay islands in Queensland. Although the British press at the time (according to the book 'History of Australian Rugby League' published circa 1988) thought it was wonderful if not intimidating, the players were less than impressed about having to do one.

Shiznet, when you say 'you just Pukana' what do you mean? This is a very interesting thread but to those Europeans amongst us, pray inform us to the finer details of a Pukana!

The idea of the teams in the Pac Cup doing thier respective hakas at the same time facing one another is great!

Best one I ever saw was Tonga v NZ at the 1995 WC in Warrington. The little Tongan sub led the dance and when he individually threatened the NZ team with his finger in the middle of thier haka the whole crowd just lifted with anamazed roar......

Did anyone else think the Haka at the start of the first Australia vs. New Zealand game was a little lacklustre. One or two of them didn't even look like they cared.

Depending on the ethnic make up of the team, at times, the junior
teams may actually perform a Samoan or Tongan version.

Now.....some of those are fiercesome

Pukana can be either poking your tounge out opening your eyes very wide.
