The halfback dilemmna

Why we didn't offer Orford $500,000 is beyond me. Anyway, assuming Dykes does leave( which now I hope isn't true) and Tim Smith is not yet ready then we need to buy for next year either Joe Williams, Casey Mcguire or Brett Seymour to play halfback. I cannot see any other solution. If anyone tells me Witt or Thorman should play halfback and be given time to develop and all that crap I will throw this computer in the ocean.

I said all along we should have went for Joe Williams.
We need a No.7, it's plain and simple.
Tim Smith won't be ready for 2 years, the pace for 1st grade would be too much for him. He's not very fast either

the supposed lack of pace from Smith concerns me. How slow is he? Is he faster then Witt?

Also there was talk that another club besides manly are intersted in Williams. It must be us, no one else needs a halfback more desperately

Yes he is still on the market. However, recovering from a knee recronstruction. Dont want another player that is recovering for 12-18 months. ie. Justin Hodges, and Pat Richards

I think BS needs to watch todays game between Souths and Brisbane. Whichever HB plays the best, offer him a contract on Monday.
Both Williams and Maguire are unsigned.

If we release Dykes we have massive problems. I cringe everytime someone writes 6.Witt 7.Smith in their sides for next season. Sure they may be good young players but I dont think they are able to provide enough direction.

From last nights game I think Thorman booked himself a flight back to England.

At least Thorman had the guts to try a fwe things a bit out of the ordinary. Sure he didn't have a great game but he was trying to break it up with some stuff that simply didn't come off.

If it did come off, we'd want to bloke to get citizenship here!!!

At the time I was calling him every name under the sun but when I took 5 mins to think about I could at least commend him on having a go which is more than I can say for the most who trotted out last night.

It was hardly like his fowards were laying him a platform!

Lack of pace is not a problem, Sterlo, Stuart and Taylor were all famously slow. Lack of vision and lack of creativity is a bigger problem.

Yes, however somebody needs to tell the twit that in very cold and wet weather CONSTANTLY grubbering on the first tackle with 5 minutes on the clock will get you nowhere.

He has talent. He just does not have a footballing brain.

In answer to the first post, why the HELL would you spend half a million dollars on Orford for one season when:

(a) He'd only play for one season and with Joey and Gower, he would NOT play Origin

(b) He would not have left Melbourne anyway.

Orford is a greedy prick. He wanted more money because he believes he warranted it. Thus he put on this show about leaving the Storm blah blah blah.

And signing Joe Williams - what for? We already have young halfbacks; if we were to sign a halfnack, why not a Kimmorley, a Sherwin, a Gower? Why a rookie? We have a surplus of rookie halves.

Reality check people: our best attacking player this season (not to mention organiser) has been Dykes. Sure, at times he's erratic. But once he settles into the game he's magic.

I'd rtaher have him play 5/8 and have Witt play outside him, but whatever.

We have a good playmaking, organising and experienced half.

You know what we NEED? Forwards who are not pussies and break tackles. Vella, Pearson, even Stapo - they work hard but never look dangerous in attack. And only Stapo hits hard in D.

Tsoulos is rapidly becoming a huge turnstile.

Armit never gets a go.

Widders is a gamebreaking BENCH player.

Hopkins has heart and a good attacking game, but he never looks like breaking tackles or stinging in D.

Once we get our best team back, we'll do better.

Picture it:

8. Cannings
9. Morris
10. Armit/Tsoulos (if he pulls his finger out anytime)
11. Hindmarsh
12 Cayless
13. Wagon

There's mobility, strength, tackle-breakers, offloaders, pace, aggression.

Compare it to yesterday's pack:

8. Pearson
9. Morris
10. Vella
11. Hopkins
12. Stapleton
18. Thorman (he was named at lock)

Front rowers - slow and lazy

Hooker - too much work for him

Second rowers - Aggresive (Stapo) but don't break tackles (Hopps) and never sting in D (Hopps)

Lock - NOT a lock; selfish game

Without a good forward pack we'll never do well.

And that is probably the main reason the Warriors won. Their forwards were great.

Not everyone will agree with me but I think Witt is a 5/8 and will never succeed as a halfback.

Why?

Because he has the physique of a 5/8 and he looks best when standing 2 off the ruck. All of his breaks this year have come from him standing 2 off the ruck where he can use his step to get around the bigger/less mobile forwards. He is still young and will continue to grow and gain bulk up top which will improve his play as a 5/8. I think the club is leaning this way as well. What he needs is a dominant half inside of him. Orford would have been nice but it didn't happen.

I'm in 100 per cent agreement with you Parraren. I think he really is a long term solution at five-eighth, we just need to get someone inside him. Hopefully Dykes is back soon and they can start to develop a combination that will at least get us through the rest of the year. I wonder though if the club does realise it, because of the talk of Morris going to five-eighth next year.

I thought Thorman played the conditions pretty well, its obvios he has plyed in those conditions a fair bit

but that is as good as he gets

Dykes has had planty of chance in the past few years, and while he has had some good games, he has also been inconsistent

time to give the younguns a go, they cant do any worse

Witt is not a 5/8, the last few times he played 5/8 and Dykes or Thorman played halfback, Witt looked lost at times and there was no direction. Witt goes well at halfback but also needs the good forwards and another playmaker at 5/8. Dykes/Morris or even Tim Smith would be good at this.

What was wrong with Witt at halfback? The combination between Morris and Witt was going very well, just the forwards didnt do enough work. But still went well. Witt will pick up his form, if BS is smart enough to use him right and not waste time in using Thorman at halfback, in which clearly he is not.

Sorry that's a very dumb statement. Why the club would be stupid to pay one player 500k for a single season deal is beyond me. Thankfully they didn't.

No its not dumb. What's dumb is only offering him $400,000 and keeping Moi Moi, Kafusi, Peterson, Hopkins etc. I would give all these bums the arse to get Orford and give him the required amount. You see Dude the REALITY is that we must offer top line players overinflated contracts because no one wants to come here. Besides we have not had a real number 7 since Sterling. JT was good but only a band aid solution. Your misunderstanding of our current situation is whats DUMB.
