Many people assumed Orford would leave after one year. The reason he signed a one year deal was to keep his options open in case the central coast get added to the NRL. Last time I heard no 16th team had yet been agreed to.

Just give me one year where we have a quality halfback who knows what to do when the ref shouts "Last TACKLE"

Exactly Avenger. I dont care if he doesn't touch the ball on any other play in the the set, as long as he's got it on the last and knows what to do.

What do you mean? You mean to tell me you didn't like Thorman's last tackle option where he tried to toe the ball through 5000 sets of legs on the try line without even picking the ball up?

Why we didn't offer Orford $500,000 is beyond me.

Sorry that's a very dumb statement. Why the club would be stupid to pay one player 500k for a single season deal is beyond me. Thankfully they didn't.

No its not dumb. What's dumb is only offering him $400,000 and keeping Moi Moi, Kafusi, Peterson, Hopkins etc. I would give all these bums the arse to get Orford and give him the required amount. You see Dude the REALITY is that we must offer top line players overinflated contracts because no one wants to come here. Besides we have not had a real number 7 since Sterling. JT was good but only a band aid solution. Your misunderstanding of our current situation is whats DUMB.

I agree.

I'd give Orford AS much money as he wants afters Friday nights performance.

Brian Smith would KILL for a half back with that much talent.
Instead, he has chosen Bell, Kusto, Penna, Blah Blah Blah over the past 8 years.

Has he no clue or what????

Seriously ask yourselves....... ?? We have money to throw around.
We throw BIG money at Orford..........or Tahu.............?????????

For f*** sake.............don't make me laugh.
The guy has lost the plot. He has reached idiot stage.

Smithy has a very bad record of attracting quality halfbacks. Last year we were talking to Chris Sheppard & Michael Monaghan and we got neither. This year Orford and we missed out again. If we're not talking to Joe Williams we bloody well should be...

Parraren,

Its all too late.

Once again......Smith has missed the boat.
There was ONE Quality halfback on the market (assuming that Andrew Johns only had two options), and once again we missed him.

Our recruiting programe is a joke, now that Crusher has been given the short shift.
What IS Kusto doing anyway?
Maybe, he is still a chance.

What I think is dumb is playing right into the hands of someone who is greedy and in it for the money. Orford never wanted to play for Parra. He just wanted to go where the big bucks were, AND HE ONLY WANTED TO STAY FOR A YEAR.

You should realise from the past few years that a short term solution is not the answer. Pay 500k for Orford then we sacrifice the signatures of around 5 or 6 juniors, then Orford leaves anyway so it's all for nothing. Look at the bigger picture. JT was good, and you're right he was a band-aid solution. Well so is Orford.

We need a good halfback and we offer similar money to Riddell, a 50 min player
in position that we're well covered.

I don't understand. I know Orford was after a 1 year deal, but look at it this way.
If Central Coast don't get in he's not going to run back to Melbourne. Teh we could have secured him for life.

Look we have some promising youngsters coming through, let's rebuild properly this time and keep all the good players coming through

No I wouldn't.

What happened when JT left the club? We went downhill. I think we need a long term option. I don't think we should be trading a term consistent and successful side for a one-off shot at winning the comp.

We signed Dennis Pittard for a 1 year deal, and won our first title withing 4 games!

Speaking of halfbacks, this absolutely baffles me.

Our top 4 halves include a former Dally M 5/8 of the year, a former Australian Schoolboys halfback (and captain from memory), a GB "A" rep player, and a very talented up and comer who has been touted as a future Queensl;and origin half.

Coaching them is two former halfbacks - one an understudy to one of the all time greats, the other a record breaker.

And we can't get a decent game out of any of em!!!!!

*Sigh*

(1) On the comment that "We need a halfback but we signed Riddell":

We need forwards to lay a solid foundation from which halfbacks and 5/8's can work. I can gurantee that with soft-useless forwards Orford, Joey and Gower would struggle to look half as good.

Riddell is a game-breaker; he regularly makes line breaks or supports them; hits hard in defence; and has an infectious attitude. He can MOST DEFINITELY help our go-forward.

(2) On the "Let's blow half a mill on Matty O so we can have a decent shot at winning the comp next year":

Wouldn't you rather win the competiton next year AND be competitive from then on?

Because signing Orford to a one year deal would make us a real threat in 2005, and then in 2006+ we'd be screwed.
Long-term is the only way, baby.

(3) On the "Our halves suck" comment"

(i) Dykes has been erratic, but that is mainly due to the fact that his bone-headed teammatess stand around him looking stupified while he tries hard to find gaps and angles. He is a great attacking half, with a great kicking game and passing game and a smart head.

(ii) Thorman has all the skills, but can't YET take the NRL pressure and is a tad too selfish for my likes. He always seems to kick it for himself. However, when your teammates stand around like stunned mullets that isn't entirely your fault.

(iii) Smith is unproven in First Grade, and has only recently made the transition into Premier League. Give him time - if he's as good as some of you say, he'll be worth the wait.

(iv) Witt has all the skills. Passing, kicking, running. He hasn't looked great this year. That is mainly due to the lack of serious go-forward and personal form.

He WILL find his best form again. You just need to be patient. He hasn't even played 50 games for crying out loud!
