The hypocrisy of the NRL

They supported the sacking of Carney for his drunken antics and observed the tragic outcome of Ryan Tandy from gambling, yet they are willing to accept sponsorship and advertisements from alcohol and gambling companies.

They make me sick with these double standards.

Players are allowed to drink, players are allowed to have a punt (provided it's not on the NRL)

It's not that hard to understand.

There are 16 teams in the NRL with squads of 25. 400 players. Of those a few a year act like morons (unless you believe everything Slothfield and co tell you which would make you a f**king plank).

So the NRL is not doing too badly really. They are taking action against those players who were either too thick or arrogant to think that they wouldn't be found out bettting on games and the game has cleaned itself up over the last few years excluding serial drongos like Toddy.

Lui is a different case altogether. He should not have been allowed to sign with the cowboys at the time he did.

What does Carney pissing in his own mouth have to do with alcohol sponsorship? For all we f**king know he could've been sober. Stranger things have happened.

For the record I don't think the NRL should accept sponsorship from gambling or alcohol interests but until it's outlawed ala Winfield Cup... not much we can do. They're the ones offering the big bucks.

I don't know about hypocrisy but it does say a lot about the NRL.

Without grog and gambling sponsors they wouldn't have much sponsorship revenue.

That is partly because of the poor image of the game.

And that is partly because of alcohol and gambling related player misbehaviour.

Being associated with these companies doesn't help either.

I'd call it more ironic than hypocritical.

What is hypocritical is the NRL playing nanny when it comes to the rules of the game on the field but allowing it to look bad off it.

Carney wasn't sacked just because he gargles piss. He has a long history and this was hopefully the last straw.

i'm also very concerned about the nrl's stance on turnstile noise.

instead of the usual moderately audible click, one at lang park made more of a loud clacking noise which prompted a toddler to cover her ears in fright.

i petitioned nrl management seeking assurances that ground attendants would monitor this concerning development, but i'm yet to receive confirmation.

it makes me sick.

In other sports, such as boxing and MMA (UFC) it's perfectly legal for fighters to bet on themselves to win. They even often announce it publicly that they've gambled all their potential winnings on themselves and no one cares.

The NRL is beyond geniused, that of all times to announce the outcome of their own investigation, they choose to do it on the eve of origin. They have even managed to leak to the news to the press so instead of one single announcement, there is a steady trickle of suspense, rumours and build up for another "scandal".

Anyway, like Benji Marshall said on the footy show long ago, he just gets his mum to place the bets for him.

Horse and dog trainers and owners bet on themselves almost compulsorily.

Of course they aren't out there running. But still.

Whether players decide to drink or bet on sports its up to them.
What i take umbrage to is that the NRL who wants to project a clean wholesome image, getting into bed with alcohol and betting companies.

I remember the build up to the 1998 grand final between Canterbury and Brisbane. One of the most intriguing things in the lead up to the game were the articles about how the Bulldogs were "playing for $2000 a minute" or something like that, because the whole bulldogs team had got together and placed a large bet on themselves to win the premiership early in the season when they were big outsiders.

Did you get a response, he asks knowing the answer be no.

I had my backpack checked as i entered a ground recently & the guy who touched it had tomato sauce on his hand, presumably from a hastily consumed exorbitantly priced pie.

The subsequent matter got onto my sock & rendered it useless (the sauce that is)

I complained to NRL management but no response has been forthcoming

Not sure if ignoring important issues and grandstanding over self inflicted player stupidity is hypocrisy
