How many teams is not the first question that should be asked.
The first one is how many Sydney teams, then you can work out your answer
54What do you think is the right number of teams to compete in the nrl.
Me personally i'd love to see 12 eventually with each team playing everyone twice.
Watcha reckon?
Lucky too. Otherwise Perth wouldn’t get in.If we could have 14-16 teams playing and filling 35-50k stadiums every week that would be ideal. As it is we are going for a more the merrier small clubs model.
If we are starting today from scratch, ideally you'd have:
1. North Sydney / North Shore
2. Sydney City / Eastern Suburbs
3. Southern Sydney (inc the Shire)
4. Inner West Sydney
5. Western Sydney
6. South West Sydney
7. Newcastle
8. Central Coast
9. Wollongong
10. North QLD
11. Sunshine Coast / Moreton Bay
12. Brisbane
13. Ipswich & Logan
14. Gold Coast
15. Canberra
16. Melbourne
17. Adelaide
18. Perth
19. Auckland
20. Christchurch
21. Wellington
22. Geelong
Covers the top 15 population centres in Australia and reinforces our heartlands, plus the top 3 population centres in NZ
You may as well have that now.4 teams playing each other six times.
You may as well have that now.
We have a first and second division already, except second division sides play in the top division and get beat easily when they play the strong teams.

Sportsbet likely require that as part of their sponsorship termsYeah you make a good point. Except for the fact that the eventual premiers the Panthers lost during the regular season to the Sea Eagles, Warriors, Dragons, Cowboys and Raiders.

Misconception: the salary cap is there to even up the comp. The salary cap is there to stop teams spending beyond their means and going broke.I’m sure somebody like Aston Villa or a Nottingham Forest might be able to snag a victory against a Man City or a Liverpool every now and then; that doesn’t mean they are a chance in hell of potentially winning the thing. The NRL has become like a European soccer competition. If that’s what people want that’s cool but market it as such. Get rid of the salary cap and stop with the pretence of an even competition.
