Television cameras turned to Jana Pittman - part-athlete, part-diva, part-Melbourne Storm devotee - and the Brookvale Oval reception was less than enthusiastic. But when those same cameras focused on Jamie Lyon, grinning broadly behind a Manly jersey thrust in front of him by a colleague, the 9790 supporters on hand seemed far more appreciative.
Speaking after Manly's two-point victory, the St Helens-bound Lyon conceded he was almost lured to the Sea Eagles this year, due largely to his close ties with recruitment officer Noel Cleal. And after his two-year stint with St Helens, the former Parramatta centre expressed his desire to link with Manly and resume his NRL career.
Yesterday's appearance at Brookvale was Lyon's first in Sydney since he quit the Eels.
"It wasn't a big crowd, but just the atmosphere - you've got your big hills and the seats aren't all the way around - there's a good vibe," Lyon said of his Brookvale experience. "It's a laid-back sort of place. I wouldn't mind coming back here, especially with Crusher here." While Lyon was reacquainted with big city crowds, the jeers that accompanied Pittman were far removed from the reception received at Athens' Olympic stadium before her 400-metres hurdles final last week.
AGAIN... DICKHEAD!
