The Las Vegas Thread

There is too much good news around right now. PNG is my only worry. Everything else is great.

It's estimated Vegas has only cost the NRL 2m, roughly what a normal season launch costs.

If that's the case, it's generated more pre season publicity since the Tina Turner days. A huge success in that regard.

Agree about PNG, fingers crossed for Perth or NZ2 for 18th team.

Pre school arguments regarding the Vegas games, not aimed at members luckily.

Games on delay ? Really ?
A comment on the TV schedule, not aimed at any poster or person, is a "pre-school insult"?

Are we entering snowflake levels of preciousness here?

In the PVL thread.

Yeah and nothing in this says who is estimating that.

VIVA LAS VEGAS

V’landys arrived in Vegas on Tuesday (AEDT). There is a view the NRL is wasting time and money by going to the US, but it is understood the Vegas promotion is costing the code less than $2 million.

The NRL has committed to a five-year experiment in Vegas but V’landys hopes rugby league will establish a permanent foothold in America for the next two decades.

“We need to see if it works,” he said.

“If it does, we could go to America for 20 years, it could be even longer than that.

“But we need to commit to an initial term of five years because it will take that long to either succeed or fail.

“There’s no point doing it once or twice and then giving up, you have to do everything you can to make it successful.

“We believe this Vegas venture could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars in the long term.

“It’s all about growing revenue which gets re-invested in the game for development and clubs so we have a bigger asset base.

“It’s all about future-proofing the game.

“It all depends on the implementation, but I believe it will work in Vegas.”

In terms of TV coverage of the games, Channel 9 only have broadcast rights for the Roosters v Broncos game. Fox Sports have exclusive broadcast rights for Souths v Manly, whilst also having broadcast rights for the Roosters v Broncos.

Any issues with FTA broadcasts in Australia, that's on penny pinching Nine. Not anyone else. I mean the fact that Nine's commentary team will be calling the game off a TV screen in Sydney whilst Fox Sports have sent a crew to commentate at the ground.

To be fair Fox call all of their games off TV usually, It would be to ensure the best product is sent into homes on Fox Sports US as to why they are going over.

You can never tell the difference

I wonder if they mean, when they say the event is costing 'less than $2 million', they are referencing the expected gap between revenue and expenditure for year, versus the total cost for the event.

The venue hire alone works out to be around AUD1.5m, so I imagine the total cost for the event is great than that $2m, unless the Visit Las Vegas and Fiji Airways deals are bigger than expected.

Anyway, we'll all know soon enough what it was, one thing you can rely on in RL is someone leaking the news one way or the other.

The NRL is basically all Fox have keeping them sustainable in the short to medium term.

That would be it. Say it costs $15m, If they get $13m back then it has cost $2m.

In big games you can definitely tell the difference.

For example the WCC, the pom commentators gave the game a sense of occasion and worked off the crowd, the ch 9 commentators sitting in a studio a million miles away couldn't get a feel for the game or the crowd going nuts, Freddy and Gus spent most of the game talking about thier favourite coffee shops.

I expect the same drivel from Gus and Freddy for the Vegas games.
