I dont think its bad for the reasons you stated, but I do think its a bit of a disappointment. Think may were hoping at least a 100k for the firm game. I saw on twitter someone defending these numbers by reminding everyone this is what the AFL typically gets on FS1. The way I interpret that is after going all out and making a big deal about this the NRL got the same ratings as a late night program filler. I imagine these were sobering numbers for the NRL, and hopefully they'll learn from them.

I think if they are unwilling to kick off at 700 pm US east coast time/11 am AUS east coast time, then theyll struggle to make inroads in the US. With that said, I wonder even if they wanted to start at 700 pm could they? We have a packed schedule as it, on that Saturday we had ~ 10 hours of european soccer, ~12 hours of college basketball, spring training baseball, MLS, NHL, NBA. Not sure if there is room in the schedule to move them up earlier.

As I said before, I saw no advertisement on FS1 for these games. But again is that the NRLs fault? Its not like they can force Fox to run promos during their other programming. Also Fox is notorious for going through the motion of their sports coverage outside of football. Ask any soccer fan and theyll be happy that Fox as gotten out of european soccer.

Going back to kick off times, Im not sure how much the NRL can realistically gain from the US when this is the kick off times for the next round:

Thr: 500 am
Fri: 300 am, 500 am
Sat: 1200 am, 230 am, 435 am
Sun: 105 am, 315 am
What we should do is the east coast USA to super league and the NRL take on the West Coast. Times are very favorable for the west coast. For example our normal 2pm Sunday game in Aust is Saturday Night 7pm West coast time/ Vegas is considered west coast time. So concentrate on 100m apox west coast population.

As of tomorrow when daylight savings starts over there, that 7pm becomes 8pm, and in 4 weeks time when daylight savings ends here, it becomes 9pm.

There's no doubt 61k would have disappointed NRL HQ.

Imo it's the kick in the pants the NRL needed, look at the 100's of millions Union has wasted over the last 5 years and they have crowds of 1.1k and 30k viewers. It's a warning to the NRL. If the Vegas games rated 250k they would have patted each other on the back and been happy, but 61k shows the NRL they will have to up the ante. Wielder reported today the NRL is exploring FTA partners.

Good luck to them, it'll be interesting to see what happens over the next 5 years

The NFL Thursday game stats at 8.15pm and goes well into midnight, so being a Saturday 9pm for our 2pm game would not be a problem. If the game in NZ at local time 2pm it would be ( even after all the changes you outlined) it would be back to 7PM Saturday LA /SF/ Las Vegas Time.

You're right. I really feel like it will serve as motivation to up the anti next year. They will be going over everything that worked and what didn't. I also feel like lots of good connections with local media ect were made and will be less difficult in that regard.
The reality is exactly what PVL said " this is the foundation "
I guess it's taking us all a little time to get up to speed with him and how this works. We're all playing catch up , PVD is on another level.

Given Weilder's whole livelihood is based on a FTA model, he massively overstates its importance in the US market.

They are used to watching TV, and particularly sports on "cable'.

So is the UK.

From every Sharks supporter, Thank you PVL and Vegas!!!

Cronulla Sharks secure $5 million windfall after a big night in New York

Sharks powerbrokers have detailed an extraordinary 48-hours that has resulted in an immediate $5 million cash injection from one of Australia’s most influential businessmen.

ARLC chairman Peter V’landys vowed that the NRL’s US odyssey would result in new revenue streams.
And here’s the proof.
Sharks powerbrokers have detailed an extraordinary 48-hours in New York that has resulted in an immediate $5 million cash injection from one of Australia’s most influential businessmen.
Flying from the NRL season launch in Las Vegas to New York last Sunday, Sharks chairman Steve Mace and CEO Dino Mezzatesta met with Mike Dorrell, the CEO and co-founder of US$61 billion global investment firm Stonepeak.
From a meeting with Dorrell at his plush New York offices, Cronulla’s most significant decision-makers were taken to dinner at one of the Big Apple’s most exclusive clubs.
Over a lavish meal, the Sharks even offered Dorrell, a tragic Cronulla fan, the chance to FaceTime club legend Andrew Ettingshausen.
Born in Sutherland Shire with his father a teacher of Port Hacking High, Dorrell owns Stonepeak, an American investment powerhouse headquartered in New York City.
The firm invests in infrastructure, with offices in Hong Kong, Houston, London, Sydney and Singapore.

It is the largest independent infrastructure investment firm in the world.
Ironically for the Sharks, who are eager to be chosen as one of the four teams that are given the chance to play in Las Vegas next year, Stonepeak acquired The Cosmopolitan Hotel in Sin City for US $5.65 billion in 2022.
The decision by Dorrell to support rugby league, is not only a major coup for the Sharks via a multimillion-dollar donation, but also the entire game.
It speaks to V’landys guarantee that the game’s push into the US market would open up new relationships.
At a time where the Sharks are pushing to overcome major delays with the opening of their new Leagues Club, Cronulla’s ability to receive a $5 million cash bonus from Dorrell after just 48-hours in New York is an extraordinary win for the Shire-based club.
Dorrell had sent Mezzatesta and Mace a message last January introducing himself and his love for the Sharks.
It led to the Sharks executive’s wrapping-up their Las Vegas experience on Sunday to fly to New York to meet Dorrell, alongside his brothers, Lucas and Ben, also Sharks fans living in the US.
The group then went next door to members-only restaurant ZZ’s Club New York.
Dorrell said he had been watching from afar the swift transition of the Sharks from near bankruptcy to asset strong under the stewardship of Mace and Mezzatesta, which is what triggered his approach to be part of the continual growth of the Shire-based club.

“This is for the Sharks club and fans,‘’ Dorrell said of his multimillion-dollar cash gift to the club.
“I have followed the Sharks religiously since I was a young boy, from Steve Rogers, to ET (Ettingshausen) and Mark ”Sparkles” McGaw, to David Peachey and onwards.
“I have watched and re-watched the 2016 Grand Final, a game which gave every Sharks fan a near heart attack in the final minutes, followed by a multi-generational outpouring of joy when we won.
“My dad taught at Port Hacking High School and is a Sharks fan.
“My brother Simon played professionally. Rugby League is in our blood.
“I can’t speak highly enough about the current players and management.
“Let’s not wait 50 years for another premiership.”
Mace said Dorrell’s investment in the Sharks was validation for the club’s trajectory.
“Mike’s support and involvement with the Sharks will undoubtedly bring a significant boost to our reputation and financial standing,” Mace said.
“Both Dino and myself are delighted to welcome lifelong Sharks supporters into the club’s family.
“We didn’t know what to expect. We hit it off immediately with Mike, Lucas and Ben. Like old mates with a shared love of the game.
“The collaboration with the Dorrell family is expected to provide invaluable support to the Sharks and further elevate the club’s stature.”

Mezzatesta said the NRL’s decision to promote the game into the US provided an extraordinary conduit to Dorrell, while also pushing the Sharks hopes for a Las Vegas start in 2025.
“The NRL gave us all a reason to enjoy our game in the USA and the Dorrell family are hopeful they will be watching their team, the Sharks, play in Vegas for 2025,” Mezzatesta said.
The Sharks aren’t the only team to have received an immediate benefit from spending time in the US.

As revealed by The Daily Telegraph, Manly have held talks with the UFC over an alliance that could culminate in 4 Pines Park being turned into a modern 20,000 seat stadium with a roof.
Sea Eagles chair and majority owner Scott Penn met UFC powerbrokers while in Las Vegas for the club’s season opener against South Sydney, where they discussed a potential partnership that would result in the UFC using 4 Pines Park as their training base in Australia.
Elsewhere, the president of NFL team the San Francisco 49ers has expressed an interest in potentially purchasing an NRL team.

Sharks’ secret meeting with $61 billion man
Pffft. Was 5m aussie not USD 5m. Cheap arse.

Just like the UK the biggest audiences are still consistently on FTA in the US and the biggest sporting audiences still come from FTA broadcasts or simulcast broadcasts across FTA & Cable.

On the same night as the NRL, you had the following ratings on the big FTA networks:
Fox : College Basketball: MI St v. Perdue - 1.32m
ABC : NBA : Nuggets v Lakers - 3.05m
NBC : The Wall - 1.59m
CBS : FBI : International - 1.94m

Even The CW has 240,000 for Clemson v. Notre Dame in the Basketball.

It's repeated constantly. ESPN is possibly the only broadcaster who draws comparable to the FTA networks on a regular basis and even their biggest games are also simulcast on ABC.

The question is, outside of Fox, who we have a little bit of a relationship with, is there any meaningful FTA provider in the US who would even entertain a chat with the NRL?

No-one.

And would V'landys ever risk the relationship with Fox?

It's also not realistic to think that one of those networks would ever program such an obscure niche sport from another country.

Yep. In fact it was BSkyB getting the broadcast rights to the EPL that saw the company grow almost exponentially. Not being on FTA in the UK hasn't hurt it.

Is that the total that watched ? That number seems remarkabley low for a marquee match up.

Adjusted for population that would be the equivalent of the Broncos V Panthers rating 240k on ch9

Maybe Americans don't sit around all day eating nachos and watching sport ?..... or maybe the NBA went woke now they're going broke lol

Think thats actually a good idea. When I lived on the West Coast I could some games lives, think it was the first two on saturday and the first on sunday. Now that Im on the east coast, watchNRL isnt worth the money due to the time, but super league plus is.
