Yes, Rooney does go too far sometimes. I don't know how he doesn't get warned more severely at times. I guess he is simply one of England's golden boys (other members include Gerrard and Terry) who constantly get away with stuff which, quite frankly, they shouldn't. The strange thing is that Rooney seemed to be getting a lot better over the last two seasons, but he's suddenly gone through a patch where he's lashing out and acting more petulant when he gets frustrated than usual.
To be fair, it was about the only big call that went our way against Chelsea though. I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere here, but the linesman disallowed a perfectly legal, and brilliantly executed, goal from Ronaldo immediately before our first. We had a corner, Rooney took the ball over to the corner flag then walked away while 'accidently' knocking the ball back into play. Giggs slowly made his way over as if he were going to take the corner, only to suddenly start dribbling with the ball and crossing for Ronaldo to head home. Perfectly legal, a good bit of trickery which has been used before by other teams. Unfortunately not only did it fool the opposition, it also fooled the linesman who didn't realise Rooney had actually taken the corner. In that situation, the linesman deserves the abuse that Rooney and Giggs gave him. Thankfully Vidic scored on the re-taken corner anyway, but it still rankles.
We were also denied a blatent penalty when Carvalho manhandled then tripped Ronaldo as Giggs swung a free kick in. Virtually a rugby league tackle, arms wrapped around him and dragging him back. Ronaldo also had another goal disallowed for offside in the second half which was extremely close, it wasn't the clear-cut certainty of the other two instances but even it probably should have been play on. So on any other day Ronaldo could easily have had a hattrick (he would have obviously taken the penalty).
