If UTD were fighting regulation battles every year half of you would disappear ;-)

Unfortunately i'm coming into bowl and the stumps have gone flying!!

I won't start by asking mr Camden pirate what links he has to Scouse land or Ridders to some small team in Madrid.

Coming from the Ukraine i'm curious as to how the other 5% of fans followed the team. A plane over every weekend? How many united fans do you know, 100? 200? None? Given the guff coming out of the Ukraine league recently i'm suprised anyone watches it.

United have loads of supporters only 76,000 of which can actualy be in the ground so i'd say a lot more than 95% don't go, same with most big teams. As an aside though, when United got relegated they still had the biggest crowds in the country...

Um, because thats where my favourite player started his career?

I don't support them because they win all the time, as most United band wagoners do. I am not implying that you are one but it is my firmest belief that no football club in the world has more glory hunter supporters than United, and their are few things that irk me more than people who follow a club simply cause they experience great success.

It's easy to accuse followers of successful teams of being fairweather friends. Unfortunately the only way to tell one way or the other is when the success ends. I hold a similar opinion of Broncos fans - how many will stick around when they fall down the ladder? We'll find out.

I don't get this mentality.

So should everyone support obscure teams because they don't win as much?

What do you say to children, who generally pick a team that is winning and popular at the time, in countries other than England who want to support a team? Don't support them, they win too much. Support this mob who will struggle and cause you pain for the next 50 years.

I dare say a lot of the Man Utd supporters in Australia have appeared as a result of children being born in the 80's hitting the age where they pick a team right around the time Man Utd were starting to win and they are now at an age where they are most vocal and noticeable.

I myself chose Man Utd because my old man followed them. But the decision was made easier when I was a kid when they were winning everything.

I just don't get the "You shouldn't follow Man Utd because they are successful" comments

I work in childcare, generally with primary school kids, and the majority that follow football go for Manchester United, and Liverpool, and Chelsea, and Arsenal. Thats just what is going to happen in a country, where the league is not as strong, and where locality doesn't influence your allegiances.

In saying that i went for them, because i did an assignment on my pop in about 1998, when I was just getting into following football, and needed an English team as the NSL was sh*te, and found out my pop was from Manchester originally, and I had never heard of Manchester City (They were division 2 back then), so Manchester United became my team.

so its okay for you to support a team because your favorite player played there... yet the thousands of fans that supported Man Utd because of the countless great players they had are considered 'glory hunters'.

the only difference between a so called 'glory hunter' and you is that the team you support stinks so you make yourself feel better by putting other fans down.

pure jealousy in my books...

That kind of statement totally ignores the point i'm trying to make. I'm not saying there aren't plenty of genuine fans of United who would follow the team through thick and thin. I'm not saying all of United supporters are glory hunters. I've met many who genuinely love the club and will support it till the day they die.

My point is that as a result of United's dominance of English football, plenty of casual fans support United simply for their success, regardless of the players etc. It's easy and cool to support a team thats always great. Are United the only team to have fairweather fans? Of course not. But going through the experiences i've had in my life, there is no team that has more glory supporters than United. I suppose that is a by-product of being successful though.

Exactly. It's how I started supporting them.

As a kid back then I didn't have access to watch many games, they only showed the Premier League and that was only one game a week if I remember correctly. And of course, they would always show the top teams at the time. I got lucky that it was Man Utd that took my fancy. It could've been Leeds, Blackburn, or any of the other teams who were competing for the titles in the early 90's. Indeed, my first actual Man Utd memory was my dad laughing at me because we lost the title to Blackburn, so if I was going to be a 'glory hunter' I probably would've changed over to them.

the English league will always be stronger than the Ukrainian league
there is just no comparison

What makes you think I automatically support an English team.
must I have one to debate this?

The reason for my dislike & "glory hunters" comment was based on the fact that Man U is now only a business no longer a football club.
Results, Results, Results.
meh thats hardly football for me

I appreciate the Italian leagues alot more.
I love the history of the clubs, and the local support thats embedded everywhere you go.
The fans still have a large say in how there club is run, and while maybe not as rich or successful its how real football is and should always be.

Maybe your a modern football fan? which is fine,
Ill take history and love for the local clubs, you have your winning team and the cups.

Keep making glazer rich; Im sure he needs it

That's all true, no doubt about that. But what annoys us is when some idiot wants to pretend to be better than us, and starts spouting off about 'glory hunters'.

Who gives a flying hoot why somebody starts supporting a team. It's human nature that, unless you have a specific link to something, you will gravitate to a successful team when you first start taking an interest. The only important thing is whether they stay supporting the team in the tougher times, or whether at the first hint of trouble they jump ship to a club who is successful at that moment. There will invariably be some that do that, but the vast majority of those will only be casual fans anyway, not ones who have supported that team for 20 odd years, getting up at all hours to watch the games, having only four or five hours sleep because they are watching pre-season friendlies against Korean teams on a jumpy internet feed just to get their Utd-fix.
