Sarks captain livid at McIntyre system

Cronulla captain Paul Gallen is filthy after being told the high-flying Sharks must play their opponents on enemy territory next week if Sunday's fourth and last NRL qualifying final goes to form.

Despite finishing equal first in the minor premiership and then trouncing Canberra 36-10 in their qualifying final on Saturday night, the Sharks face the prospect of being seriously disadvantaged in the second round of playoffs under the controversial McIntyre system.

Should minor premiers Melbourne account for the New Zealand Warriors at Olympic Park on Sunday afternoon, Cronulla would have to play the Sydney Roosters in next week's sudden-death semi-finals - and Gallen is of the belief such an encounter would be staged at the SFS.

"That's what I was told last night as I was going home," Gallen told 2KY radio on Sunday.

"I was told we will have to play the Sydney Roosters next Friday night at the (Sydney) Football Stadium.

"I don't think that's right at all. Brisbane finished fifth and they get to go and play at (home at) Suncorp Stadium. Go figure that out."

In fact, had the sixth-placed Raiders beaten the third-placed Sharks last night, they too would have clinched a home final in Canberra next week.

And should the eighth-placed Warriors upset the Storm, they would host the Roosters next Friday in New Zealand.

NRL rules, though, state that the winners of four qualifying finals will host the second-week semi-finals at "home city" venues - but not necessarily at individual clubs' home grounds.

Sydney's two designated venues are the SFS and ANZ Stadium and the league will decide after the Melbourne-Warriors match where next week's matches will be played.

NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley was at Toyota Stadium last night and said should a Cronulla-Roosters final materialise, it would be contested at a venue which offered "the best fit".

Annesley said the Sharks would have no say in the matter.

Cronulla coach Ricky Stuart was clearly unimpressed with the prospect of the Roosters - who finished lower than the Sharks in fourth place in the minor premiership and then lost their opening final 24-16 to Brisbane on Friday night - could host his side in a knockout clash.

"Whose decision is it?" Stuart said before vowing to discuss the issue with Sharks chief executive Tony Zappia, who will undoubtedly pursue the matter with the NRL.

Should the Warriors upstage the Storm, the Sharks would have next week off and advance straight to a preliminary final - against either Brisbane or Melbourne, who would clash on Saturday night at Suncorp Stadium.

The vagaries of the McIntyre system dominated the lead-up to the opening weekend of finals, with fans flooding talkback radio with their concerns.

The issue continues to rage, with league legends Andrew Johns and Laurie Daley both raising doubts over the fairness of the format.

It should be at ANZ stadium over SFS, but then SFS has a smaller capacity... but if we were to say play the Roosters in the past in a prelim final and that was at the SFS, then it would be the same issue. But then, if the rules state the winners should get a home-city venue, which would otherwise mean an "incentive" or "advantage", then I'd choose ANZ... I don't know

On the Footy show bout 1/2 ago they discussed this scenario, Joey Johns especially said he didn't agree with it and said it should be played at ANZ, to which snozz Daley replied "It will be at the SFS without doubt"

Personally I think it stinks that a 1st week loser gets a homeground advantage against a 1st week winner. Game should be at Shark Farkin Park.

To clarify, Sharks Park is not an option due to capacity.

But as the highest ranked between the two, it is our choice between SFS and Olympic.

I presume SFS is more profitable hence the game will be there.

I would prefer Olympic as that is where the GF will be and it is not the oppositions home ground.

But understand commercially SFS may be better for the club.

But it is our decision.

Perhaps I am mistaken, but I think Annesley is talking about it will not be Shark Park.

Appears I am wrong

The NRL will determine whether the SFS or ANZ Stadium will be used next weekend with week one winners Cronulla supposed to receive a home city advantage over losers the Roosters under the controversial McIntyre final eight system.

I thought I had read a couple weeks ago, it would be the clubs choice, but small grounds were out, with Manly another team with such a choice.

I work at ANZ, and we hadnt been given shifts for the weekend, which we normally do if there is any possibility of a game [i.e. the Swans games]. We then wait for the weekend results to see if the match is on or not.

But theres no prep at all for a game at ANZ next weekend so I'm guessing it will be at the SFS, unless we can use a lot of force and get it moved to Shark Park.

A packed 22000 at Toyota would be better than an empty 25000 at SFS or ANZ, obviously, even for the NRL in general.

So the Roosters get a home semi final twice . Galls right its a rip off!!!! Bloody toffee nosed capuchino drinking Roosters. It should be at Shark Park . They lost so it should be were we want it to be. The most they will get would be 25,000 and that would look stupid at ANZ . That said its nice start by Gall and Ricky to put us into the underdog mode.

it will definitely not be at Shark Park.
The rorters would have to agree with that for starters like when Bennet did with the cowboys & broncs a few years ago.
But I can only imagine what advice politis would be getting from his advisor.

Week 2 & 3 finals won't be at Shark Park or any other ground in Sydney apart from the SFS or ANZ.

The corporate facilities not up to standard at the lesser suburban grounds, and the NRL has big money deals in place to host Week 2 & 3 finals at the two aforementioned grounds. When the Broncos/Cowboys final in 2004 was switched from Sydney to N-QLD it cost the NRL a small fortune to pay out the various contractors (Stadium Staff, Ground Cleaning crews etc).

The same issue arose last season when Parramatta hosted the Bulldogs at ANZ stadium in Week 2. There was some bitching in the media, but most people were sensible enough to realise that once the finals move beyond week 1 you should consider it fortunate that your team is still competing and is playing in their home city.

On the Continious call today Zappia is pushing for the game against the Roosters for ANZ stadium, They lose to the Broncos and for that we congratulate them with another home game final...
