I think it was Sven who said it. Then he followed it up the following morning by saying, "Let's not put pressure on the boy". Erm #-o

This is what I have been saying all along, although others would blindly like to point out my so called hatred of England.

Deluded perhaps, but not necessarily arrogant. Alessandro Nesta must take the cake for sure with this comment- "To finish third behind two teams who are inferior to us really hurts."

The bottom line in all of this is that if Rooney was playing in a Brazilian shirt or an Argentinian shirt you'd all be creaming one off over his perfomances so far.

All that Eriksson said was that there has been no young player since Pele in 1958 to have made such an impact in a major international tournament.

And he isn't wrong.

Rooney isn't that great, he has potential to be great, but he until he IS great, don't go telling me his is a pele, because thats just wrong. Lousy english, they like to talk themselves up way too much.

Spot on Surburban Knight. But dont waste your breath when dealing with some of the fuqwits on here. They only here what they want to here when the FACT is that Sven said no-one at such a young age had made as big an impact as Rooney since Pele. And he's right!

Ah Alessandro you greaseball, if both teams were inferior, why did you finish below them? Close the door on the way out mate :p

Erm...Rooney hasn't really done JACK yet!!...Quarter finalas - woop-de-doo!!...that's about where England ALWAYS bomb out...NOW is where we'll se what he's made of!!

And what about:

Michael Owen WC 1998?? (Brilliant all-round and scored THAT goal vs Argentina under immense pressure!!)

Ronaldinho WC 2002?? (Indivuidually magnificent (despite a dodgy red-card - and Only a world cup WINNER, no less!!)

Marco van Basten EC 1988 (On fire, maybe not as young as the other 2, but was a rookie at the tournament, and is STILL the best striker since Pele for SURE!!!)

Just for three!

Pundits, managers, gutter-press and agents WILL talk some utter, utter shite at times though, won't they!!?? lmao

9 goals in only 13 international starts would say otherwise.

Already a proven talent at the age of 22 when he played in the world cup. He hardly set the world on fire in the tournament either.

I dont recall Van Basten being only 18 in 1988. Already a proven talent by that time.

What would someone with the football knowledge and experience of Eriksson know eh, when compared to someone like your goodself? LMAO

It was actually Pele who compared Rooney to Pele. (Sun Uk 23rd June)
Sorry I can't give you a link as i dont subscribe to the paper.
As mentioned above Sven had his say as well.
Got to agree with you guys though the English Press is the Pits.
As for Rooney he hasn't produced his Euro form in the premiership.
Until he does he is over-rated in my book.
He spent a lot of time on the bench for Everton this year.
I doubt Pele would have done that at the same age.

No it wasn't. It was Eriksson. Pele has however, since Erikssons comments, come out and said he is indeed a very talented player with maturity and composure beyond his years.

He's been playing in a mid to bottom half of the table side. Put him in a team with quality players who will give him the quality balls that ALL strikers need and he shows his class. As has already been proved....... I refer you to my previous post...... 9 international goals in 13 starts would indicate a very talented young player.

Over-rated at only 18??? Playing AND starring in what most would say is the hardest international comp? Do me a favour.

Sorry suburbanknight I couldn't put that sun link in.
I know Sven said it as mentioned above but dont you think coming from the man himself would carry more substance.
And yes he is over-rated at 18.(in comparison to the top strikers in Europe).
Rooney got big wraps as a 16 yr old. (deservedly so) at 17 too and now at 18.
He is a great 18 yr old but he is not even a Michael Owen yet.
He has had 3 very good games at top level.
Lets see him do it week in week out. (which he has yet to do in the premiership).
Same as Baros.

But the point still stands on the English press however, as they are the ones who spiced it up. If anything, it just verifies the original remark by OVP! Sven made the light remark, and it was the press being the arrogant clowns they are who made a point of it? Sven's not at fault here, the press is, and that is what this is the original point that OVP raised, of which I strongly agree with.

Who cares whether or not he is the next Pele, which needless to say he isn't! This topic is about the press, who by making more of the comments than they should have, made themselves look like jackarses.

There will never be another Pele, and don't get me wrong I love Rooney to bits, but to be fair how can you compare him after three games of one tournament and a handful more in qualifiers? Once again, this comes back to the English Media Jigsaw Puzzle. Clows... :?

You have to remember that not only was Rooney playing for a struggling club team, he was also often playing on the wing rather than as a striker. So his goal tally was always going to be fairly low last season.

And generally, I would've said that it's because he was playing in a struggling team that he looked so good, but he's proven that even amongst a team of stars he can stand out. More props to him there :!:

And I'll say it for just one more time...... NO ONE has compared Rooney to Pele in anything other than to say he has made a huge impact on a tournament just as Pele did in 58'.

Please stop pinning this just to the English media, the whole world has gone Rooney crazy.......

AS, Spain -

Wayne Rooney is the new Harry Potter. With his magic, his nose for the ball, his speed and his tactical game, he has that robust aspect and boyish face that make him the new English idol.
If JK Rowling found in the old fashioned Harry Potter a true magician who revolutionised the world, then Eriksson has found in the young Everton player the hero of the English squad. He is the best seller of the European Championships.

Marca, Spain -

When you have one such as Rooney in your team, the faith is kept alive. The young yet explosive forward is making his way into the history books.

Das Bild, Germany -

King Rooney - England falls at his feet. Who is David Beckham now Englishmen have Wayne Rooney (just 18!!)

Gazetto dello Sport, Italy -

Super Rooney, England Flies. On the verge of elimination, England pull two goals from the Super baby Rooney.
