I heard the cover by Blancmange before the original.

On the tangential topic of artistic larceny, Glen Matlock has said he stole part of SOS for Pretty Vacant. Likewise Elvis Costello vis-a-vis Dancing Queen and Oliver's Army.
I remember being out one night at a pub and a DJ announced this ABBA's new song The Day Before You Came, there was a bit of stunned silence that it was an ABBA track but nothing cheery or dancefull to it, It was the first time i had heard it and thought, i'm not sure, i was split 50 /50 on it and thought i have to be subjective about it and listen to it again, it did really grow on me and is a favourite now.

Talking about artistic larceny, Madonna had to do it also to make her first relevant song in years with Hung Up stealing a lot of Gimme, Gimme, Gimme.

2- Voulez Vous- Another top album filled with plenty of disco delights, especially the title track and gems like As Good As New, Lovers Live A Little Longer, Angel Eyes and the beautiful driving force of Kisses Of Fire.
I bought the single Voulez-vous/Angel Eyes. In one of those orange Epic sleeves. Always a wee bit disappointing when a record came in standard-issue label regalia rather than a picture sleeve.

Gimme, Gimme, Gimme.
Bought that too. Also in an orange Epic sleeve.

I still have a few ABBA singles in my vinyl collection which are tucked away, Gimme came with nice art work but was just on a piece of paper inside a plastic sleeve, same with Summer Night City, The Day Before You Came and Under Attack.
Dancing Queen, Knowing Me Knowing You, Money, Money, Money, The Name Of The Game came in proper cardboard packaging with the art work on them, the other ABBA single i have in my collection is a picture disc of Should I Laugh Or Cry

A week ago, I mentioned the TOTP repeats on BBC 4. Tonight we had an edition from 1973 featuring ELO (Showdown), Elton John, Status Quo, Slade. Pan's People dancing to Ghetto Child by the Detroit Spinners. Topping the chart was Eye Level, theme tune of the TV series Van der Valk.

Preceded by an edition from 1st April 1976. Abba's Fernando was the highest new entry at 14. Other acts included Sailor, Diana Ross, John Miles, Fox. Wonderfully absurd Pan's People routine accompanied Jungle Rock by Hank Mizell. Brotherhood of Man were number 1. Two days after this broadcast, they won the Eurovision Song Contest.

By all accounts, Fernando was number 1 in Oz for an eternity.

Bjorn's English is superb. Much better than any NRL or SL media commentators. Although that might be damning with faint praise. Fernando is reckoned to be the only Abba lyric containing a grammatical error.

I'll have to crank up Pretty Vacant and listen for that. It's definitely one of my favourite Pistols songs.

TOTP often turns up on you tube so i watch clips or sometimes the whole show, especially love any episode with Marc Bolan on it. I have seen it before but just checked out Showdown on TOTP again on you tube. Something to really like about Brotherhood Of Man with the cheesy but infectious Save All Your Kisses For Me.

Fernando was no 1 for 14 weeks in Australia, the ABC switchboard was bombarded with complaints one time when Countdown decided not to play it at the end of the show where they always finished off with the no 1 song.
Mamma Mia was no 1 in the Australia for 10 weeks and interesting the music company didn't want to release it as a single but then caved in when Molly Meldrum kept on pestering them to release it. Interesting also once Mamma Mia fell from no 1 , SOS slipped straight in no 1 for 1 week after sitting in the no 2 position for a while.

Bjorn's English was very good and the amazing thing with ABBA was writing and recording all the songs while English wasn't their first language.

Speaking of TOTP's and Brotherhood Of Man, this performance of Angelo has ABBA written all over it.

This is TopPop, the Dutch equivalent of Top of the Pops. Seems to be a lot more of their archive still extant.

Prior to April 1976, standard practice at the BBC was to wipe the tapes of Top of the Pops once the show had been broadcast. TOTP began in 1964. Very few complete editions have survived from the period 1964-76.

Coming two years after Abba's victory in 1974, the thought that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" was in the minds of many who witnessed the success of Brotherhood of Man. Ditto the next time the UK won Eurovision in 1981 with Bucks Fizz.

Angelo was a big hit for BOM. Their follow-up single flopped. So normal service was resumed with Figaro. Group and entourage clearly haunted by the ghost of Fernando.

Lol, yes Figaro was terrible. Speaking of imitation, Tight Fit who had a big hit with The Lion Sleeps Tonight bought out a song called Fantasy Island, if that wasn't trying to rip off the ABBA formula nothing was.
