The New NRL

I think the sport that the NRL should worry about is (soccer/football)
that being the A League.

What the NRL should do is start fresh in season 2010.

How would they do this you may ask?

This is how I would do it:

> Close down the league

> Combine/Merge NRL-ARL-QRL-CRL-NSWRL

> Start a new comp known as the NSW Metro Cup.

> Teams Being

1. St.George Dragons
2. Newtown Jets
3. Manly Sea Eagles
4. Cronulla Sharks
5. Canterbury Bulldogs
6. Balmain Tigers
7. Parramatta Eels
8. Penrith Panthers
9. Easts Roosters
10. Souths Rabbits
11. Norths Bears
12. Wests Magpies

These teams will be feeders to all NSW,Canberra & Melb teams

The New NRL will be as follows:

1. North Queensland Cowboys
2. East Coast (a team from the Sunshine Coast)
3. Brisbane Broncos
4. Gold Coast Titans
5. Coffs Habour or Port Macquarie team
7. Newcastle Knights
8. Central Coast
9. Illawarra or Wollongong team
10. Sydney City
11. West City (a team in West Sydney)
12. Canberra Raiders
13. Melbourne Storm
14. Adelaide
15. Perth
16. Auckland Warriors
17. Wellington (NZ needs 2 teams to help take over union)
18. NT/PNG team

All the Qld,Perth,NT/PNG & Adelaide teams will have feeder clubs in the Qld Cup

As for Auckland & Wellington thier feeder clubs will be from the NZ comp

> It will have a 34 round comp (feeder players to cover for players on rep duty)

> State of Origin stays the same best out of 3 games played mid week

> Anzac Test played on Anzac Day Week

2 x Friday Night Games
3 x Saturday Games
3 x Sunday Games
1 x Monday Night Game

A top 8 only

maybe a AFL style top 8 final series

Yeah sure, this will all be done in the next 8 months.
LOL @ 34 round comp....yeah, why not just expand that to 52 weeks.
More chance of the Sharks and Roosters meeting in the GF this year

Worst thread ever

f**k soccer.

It's got it's place, but it will never take anything away from RL.

A world cup every 4 years and a few soccer mums won't harm RL at all.

Next...

I'll bite. It's all well and good to say this, but there are a number of problems:

1\ Money - There has been no interest in establishing a NT team, and PNG doesn't have the money or facilities to support a side. Add to that while the Illawarra loves Rugby League, but there is no money to put into the game down there by an interested party (Steelers Leagues are being propped up by St George Leagues and the Gordon family). Adelaide doesn't have the fans to support a side (which has been shown by the Rams and the Sharks vs Cowboys game this season) which means that they don't have the $$$. Add into the fact that Coffs Harbour / Port Macquarie is a very small population area, there just wouldn't be the fans there (once again, fans = $$$) to support a professional sporting side.

2\ Supporters - NRL fans in Sydney, which is where you are making these wholesale changes, are firmly entrenched in their football side. Deciding for sh*ts and giggles to remove these teams is just rediculous. Add into the fact that you have decided that one side will literally have half of Sydney's population to feed from (West Sydney), and another with very few RL clubs (Sydney City), you have already made a very weak RL stronghold. Also, there is the problem that you have decided that four current NRL clubs, including the current reigning premiers, won't have a team to follow at all (St George, Canterbury and Cronulla in Southern Sydney and Manly in Northern Sydney) means you are literally gutting top flight RL from huge League strongholds. Take away these fans, and you have the problem from point 1 - NO MONEY!

3\ Finals series - Watch the AFL Footy Show in the lead up to their finals series, and you will hear the hosts plus the players on those shows preach on about how much they dislike their current finals system, preferring the method used in the NRL. The main bone of contention is that 1 has to play 4, meaning the team finishing 1st is at a disadvantage. The AFL players feel it benefits the teams finishing 5th and 6th, because they get to play the weakest sides and follow it up by playing a defeated opponent who is higher on the ladder.

4\ Metro Cup - The original idea for the Metro Cup was to create a League for the Newtown Jets to play in, while giving stronger Leagues Clubs in Sydney who were disproportionally successful in their region better competition. The Bluebags are now in the NSW Cup as a feeder club for Easts, but the idea of the Metro Cup is still the same, not a retirement ground for former 1st Grade team. Also, Perth (playing as the WA Reds) already have their feeder side in the Metro Cup, and have a goal of moving up to the NSW Cup in the next 1-2 years.

That's all I can think of for the moment.

2 Sydney teams. You think Tigers, Eels, Bulldogs and Panthers supporters are going to stand side by side and barrack for a team just because there is a WEST at the beginning of its name?

This is one of the great misconceptions about streamlining the comp. People say 'lets have a north, south, east and west club. Four clubs, four regions BAM problem solved. Well no, its not solved and the clubs will fall over withing 5 years.

Sydney has 9 clubs at the moment. Brisbane has 1. I think that is where the problem lies. 1 maybe 2 sudney clubs need to be sacrificed. no more. Sydney is huge and encompasses a wide geographic area.

If central coast with its league background, the players its produced and a state of the art stdaium can't get a team HOW ON EARTH do you expect Port Macquarie and Coffs to get one?

This is getting ridiculous, every day there's a new thread about this rubbish. The only Sydney club in danger of folding is the sharks. Even I, as a dragons fan, don't want them to fold. Why you people keep suggesting closing traditional Sydney clubs is beyond me - the NRL dominates all other sports in Sydney, and you want to give it to they AFL and the A-league?

they must be closet AFL fans, there is no other sensible reason.

Super League had more chance of surviving than any of these schemes.

Most glaringly obvious stupid idea in the original post: A NT / New Guinea team. LOL.

Why don't we play an ANZAC day test against the Japanese too. You know, for old times sake. Unreal.
