The nuances of each ground

Went to Carrington Park for the Panthers-Knights trial in February. I loved it.

I thought it was your quintessential country ground - a grandstand that can seat a couple of thousand, the rest of the area grassed, with a big hill on the other side, and a scoreboard that cuts out all of the bullsh*t of the modern ones, and just tells you the score and time left.

And the slope of ground so you can not see the other side, the cars that can drive into the ground

The hill was built up to improve the view. There had to be a bump as a result becuse of the houses behind.

I've never seen needles at other grounds... :?

No fond memories for me. When I was a young kid, before I hit firsts, I went along with my old man to watch Oberon v Bathurst St Pats in the final at Carrington Park. Those dirty bastards won 9-8 and this broke our 7 year run of premierships. (we did win the 3 subsequent grandfinals)

After the game we drove Butch Rawlings home and he as shattered as the rest of us. For old Magpies fans he was the dad of Doug Rawlings who played for Wests in the late 80's and early 90's- top bloke. Butch played a bit for Newtown, himself.

Croydon, I know it's not a Rugby League ground, but the place that the once great Gippsland Falcons called "home" surely deserves a mention...?

Mobil Park holds fond memories for me Hybrid.

I will be making an appearance on TWG in the next day or so. My presence has been missed.

Here's another picture from the main grandstand at Pratten Park- I saw a game there in the mid 80's- Souths v Wests when they were moving a few of their games away from Lidcome.
I say it could hold 8 000 max.

WIN stadium: Whoever built it got it the wring way around, there are huge grandstands behind both in-goals, but only a poxy little stand along one side and a hill on the other.
Ericcson the old Eastern Scaffold/Stand, and the rain of piss/beer/coke/water that fans would have to endure underneath it where the beer/food and toilet sheds were. The Ridiculously bad video screen.
Carlaw Park: the way the ground sloped up slightly in the southeast corner!

Campbelltown- that huge open benched grandstand they used to have that looked like
something out of a 1980's Gridiron movie.

lost many a coin and a few thongs on that thing. The kids used to have a great time climbing underneath it.

refereed at carrington park on the weekend, they've made up for the drought out in bathurst by overwatering their sportsfields, making the grass sink under your foot like stepping on sponges. grandstand and scoreboard all in top condition.

Your joking right? The scoreboard works maybe one game a year, and the fields aren't a case of overwatering - its the result of trying to maintain a field worthy of a game. It's better than the Kandos/Mudgee/Lithgow fields where the ground is just dust and weed.

the scoreboard was working last weekend!
It's true about the other grounds out that way though, went past St. Pats home turf which was weed and dust as you said.
Carrington was nice and soft but i twisted my ankle when my heel sank in the turf. I would have rather been tackled on it though!!!

now theres a stadium to be seen.
fits in well with the rest of queanbeyan too
Ah yes, Seiffert - I was a denizen of the cheap seats, rough planks of wood down the airport end, $4. Another feature of this section was a fairly steep, grassy incline behind the seats, which, when wet, would provide amusement as the unwary and/or children would go A over T at slightest misstep.

Anyone got a photo of Leichhardt before it got turned around?

Why did they turn it around anyway? I just can't picture it running east/west.

Apparently the wind blowing of Fivedock bay was to strong for the team running from east to west, strange decision but that's what I heard, I guess that may of been pre Latchem Robinson stand days.

My best memory of a ground is ol' Kogarah Jubilee Oval....with (God, what was his name?) that bald guy with the thick bi-focal glasses that got banned from Rugby League venues for running onto the field & tacking a player that was heading to score againsts Saints. Was it Spike or somet.......SKULL....LOL! That's it! I have been waiting for his name to hit me!! He always wore this old mid 70's short sleeved St. George jersey. He used to sit in a tree just outside the fence on the Western side of the ground & all the kids (me included) used to collect soda cans & pass them to him! LOL....man, they were the good, ol' days. The Saints players would sit in the seats right behind the fence to the left of the walkway into the sheds. I used to sit in there with them on occassion.....so easy to get autographs from them. We'd run onto the ground after the game (I got on TV many a time doing that!) & play footy or have shots at goal! Great memories. Man, league was different back then. No security guards...the players walked casually arounfd the ground...hell, Steve Gearin used to sit on the western grassed area with his wife & watch the game when he was out injured. I loved going to the footy back then......me & my Dad, almost every home game. Then I'd win my League Gran Final on that very same ground almost every year for Arncliffe Scots. That was always a real thrill. The biggest thrill was in my 1983 Grand Final when I landed a conversion from the sideline in the dying minutes to win the game for us. Aaaaah Kogarah Jubilee....thanks for the memories!!!

Is it a myth that Skull was banned from Kogaragh after he jumped onto the field and crash tackled an Illawarra player who had made a break?
If it's true its quite ironic.

that incline is plain dangerous. so is the great big dog that the ground keeper keeps there. its like german shepheard crossed with some breed of killing machiene.

I don't believe it's a myth about him tackling someone during a reserve grade match but I believe it was against Canterbury and not Illawarra.

Fondest memories for me as a kid was the games of footy on the Henson Park hill or the Sydney Sports ground hill. I was never one for the Turner Stand until I was a bit older. The last day at the Sports Ground in 1986 against the Bears and Gary Wurth's hat trick before half time. I loved going to Leichhardt and The Roosters fans always congregated at Leichhardt in the little wooden stand above the shop at the Mary Street end. The Amco/KB/Panasonic Cup days. The loss in 84, 12-11 to Combined Brisbane (Horrie catch the pass mate). Being an ex Kogarah Marist boy I also got to play on Jubilee Oval and do the odd lap at Athletic carnival time. Redfern Oval where it cost you 40cents before you usually got near Chalmers Street. The joys of sleepout at the SCG on grand final eve, especially if your side was there. The same bloke every week at it seemed like every ground "Get ya nuts sugar coated or in the shell". At Shark Park at the Captain Cook Drive end of the ground I once cuaght a conversion from Greg Cox after he had kicked a goal. The footy doubles Ricky sold us week after week promising us you'll win this week. Well not since Slippery Morris and Crusher Cleal at Henson in 1987 have I won Ricky. North Sydney Oval in the Bob Stand. Actually I will go on record as saying there was no finer Hotel/Ground double as Percy's and NSO. Today it's probably Henson Park Hotel and Henson Park. I never attended Lidcombe Oval or Cumberland Oval sadly. Belmore Oval the scoreboard was the only one in Sydney that kept you upto date with other games. Then they closed it and brought in the Peter Moore rubbish scoreboard. They had the best one already. Even Orana Park/CS had it's memories the hill that wasn't really steep enough for those at the back to see. There was a game against Wests out there I vividly remember both clubs were struggling in the early 90's and it was absolutely pouring rain and there was a few old Wests supporters we met at the Leumeah Hotel before the match it was a Saturday night game. He suggested we might be the only ones going. He was right it seemed as though we were the only ones there. There was a lot to love about some of those old grounds. I'll leave you with this image The Paramount Jet (shaped like a concorde) at Henson Park.
