Still it was an excellent example of clinical finishing. KSC had arguably as much of the ball & had a couple of really good chances that Bayern's defenders/Olli either snuffed out or were muffed themselves.

4-1 doesn't represent what a tough tussle it was for 80 minutes. The less said about the last 10, the better though. Watching top level sporting teams merely chip it around half-heartedly is a tad offputting.

Bring on Cottbus which could actually be a danger game given that coach Patrik Sander has just been sacked. We SHOULD win. But this may not be as easy as we thing. Cottbus will be playing with a flat back 10 tomorrow no doubt.

Bayern go top as new boys help crush Karlsruhe
by Ryland James
September 23, 2007

BERLIN (AFP) - Bayern Munich's four summer signings - Luca
Toni, Miroslav Klose, Hamit Altintop and Ze Roberto - all
scored to put their side top of the Bundesliga with a 4-1
win at Karlsruhe on Sunday.

Toni scored his fourth goal of the season with a deft chip
over Karlsruhe 'keeper Markus Miller in the fifth minute,
while Miroslav Klose followed up Miller's save from an
Altintop shot to poach his fifth goal this term.

Altintop claimed his third goal in a Bayern shirt just four
minutes into the second half, so between them Toni, Klose
and Altintop have now scored 12 of their side's 16 goals
this season.

Midfielder Ze Roberto, back after a season in Brazil,
wrapped up the scoring with a well-timed strike on 75
minutes as Bayern picked up their fourth win. Along with
Schalke 04, Bayern are the only unbeaten team in the
Bundesliga.

But coach Ottmar Hitzfeld singled out Toni for special
praise.

"Luca Toni is a phenomenon in front of goal," said
Hitzfeld.

"His goal was very well taken and he has an incredible
instinct.

"The scoreline makes it appear an easy win, but it was a
tough game and Karlsruhe didn't make things easy for us."

Bayern Munich captain Oliver Kahn, playing his last league
game before retirement at the place he started his career,
was only tested when Massimilian Porcello beat him to score
a second-half consolation goal.

And Kahn, 38, admitted his final league appearance at
Karlsruhe pulled at the heart-strings having been born and
raised in the south German city.

"I felt a bit emotional before the game," he said.

"It was the place where I started my career and I have lots
of happy memories.

"I have had many experiences in football, but you never
forget the place you come from."

The result puts Bayern top of the table by two points from
second-placed Hertha Berlin and they can expect another
three points from Wednesday night's trip to Energie Cottbus
as the Bundesliga has a rare round of midweek games.

Bayer Leverkusen went third in the league after their 3-0
win over Hanover when German striker Stefan Kiessling
scored his first goal of the season, Chilean defender
Arturo Vidal and Greek striker Theofanis Gekas adding
goals.

Hertha had taken a temporary lead on Saturday as they
picked up their fourth win of the season after coming from
behind to beat Borussia Dortmund 3-2 at Berlin's Olympic
Stadium.

The Berlin-based side are now second with Arminia Bielefeld
dropping to seventh as Schalke 04 hit them with a
convincing 3-0 defeat to keep their unbeaten record and
move to fifth.

Striker Hugo Almeida hit two goals in 54 seconds on
Saturday as Werder Bremen beat Bundesliga champions VfB
Stuttgart 4-1.

The win leaves Bremen eighth in the league, while defending
champions Stuttgart are now 13th, just five places from
bottom.

Hansa Rostock picked up their first win of the season to
move off the bottom of the table with a 2-0 win over
Duisburg.

Striker Sebastian Haehnge opened the scoring on 34 minutes
before striker Enrico Kern converted a 53rd minute penalty.

Hamburg got their third win of the season as captain Rafael
van de Vaart hit a second-half goal to seal a 1-0 win
against Nuremberg.

Energie Cottbus took over as the Bundesliga's bottom side
when they were humbled 2-1 at home to VfL Wolfsburg and
promptly sacked their coach Petrik Sander on Sunday.

On Friday VfL Bochum and Eintracht Frankfurt ground out a
0-0 draw.

Bayern beat Karlsruhe to open two-point lead
By Iain Rogers

BERLIN, Sept 23 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich won 4-1 at
Karlsruhe SC to open a two-point lead at the top of the
Bundesliga on Sunday.

Luca Toni opened the scoring for the Bavarians in the fifth
minute, the Italian latching on to Mark van Bommel's pass
and cleverly lifting the ball over advancing goalkeeper
Markus Miller.

Bundesliga top scorer Miroslav Klose made it 2-0 15 minutes
later with his fifth of the season. Hamit Altintop tested
Miller from just outside the box and the Germany striker
poked the loose ball home from close range.

Altintop extended Bayern's lead early in the second half
with a powerful drive but Karlsruhe hit back when
Massimilian Porcello drove the ball through a crowd of
players to beat Oliver Kahn low to his right.

Bayern's Ze Roberto completed the scoring in the 75th
minute with a low drive after Klose's fine through ball.

Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld had glowing praise for Toni
and Klose, both new arrivals at the club this season.

"Those are two top-quality strikers," Hitzfeld said. "Toni
is a phenomenon. The way he controlled the ball and lifted
it over the keeper was really top class."

After six matches Bayern have 14 points, two more than
second-placed Hertha Berlin, who beat Borussia Dortmund 3-2
at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday.

In Sunday's other match, Bayer Leverkusen won 3-0 at
Hanover 96 to move up to third on 11 points.

Leverkusen's Arturo Vidal slipped the ball through to
Stefan Kiessling in the 50th minute and the striker's low
shot beat keeper Robert Enke.

Vidal then cheekily sidestepped Enke to slot home
Leverkusen's second and Theofanis Gekas struck their third
from the penalty spot after Enke brought the Greek player
down.

Bayern Munich returns to top of Bundesliga
September 23, 2007

MUNICH (Ticker) - Bayern Munich returned to the top of the
Bundesliga on Sunday after celebrating Oliver Kahn's return
to Karlsruhe with a 4-1 win.

Kahn started his career at the newly-promoted club but was
largely a spectator as Bayern moved two points clear of
Hertha Berlin at the summit.

Luca Toni, Miroslav Klose, Hamit Altintop and Ze Roberto
were on target for Bayern with Massimiliano Porcello
netting for the hosts.

Bayer Leverkusen moved into the top three after a
comprehensive 3-0 win in Hannover.

Following a goalless first half, Leverkusen fired on all
cylinders after the interval with Stefan Kiessling, Arturo
Vidal and Theofanis Gekas - from the penalty spot - all
finding the target for the visitors.

Almeida brace steers Bremen to win over Stuttgart
by Ryland James
September 22, 2007

BERLIN (AFP) - Striker Hugo Almeida hit two goals in 54
seconds on Saturday as Werder Bremen beat Bundesliga
champions VfB Stuttgart 4-1, while Hertha Berlin took a
temporary lead at the top of the table.

With Bayern Munich playing Karlsruhe on Sunday, Hertha
leapt into top spot with a convincing win over Borussia
Dortmund in Berlin, but there was some crazy football at
Bremen.

Almeida, 23, scored in the third and fourth minutes of a
busy opening quarter-hour which saw no less than four
goals.

Brazilian midfielder Diego hit Bremen's fourth in the 89th
minute, a rare second half goal following Boubacar Sanogo's
15th minute strike which came two minutes after Mario Gomez
scored the champions' only goal of the game.

Coach Thomas Schaaf was delighted with the performance
especially as Diego, who has signed a year-long extension
to his contract, marshalled the midfield in commanding
style.

"We played well from the first whistle," he said. "It was
an exciting game for the fans and Diego showed what a
quality player we have."

Stuttgart are now languishing in 13th place, and their
coach Armin Veh admitted they were no match for Bremen.

"We lacked the aggression and the game was virtually over
after the second goal went in," he said.

"We made some serious errors and did little to correct
them."

As Bremen moved to seventh spot, Hertha top the table
following their fourth win of the season which saw them
come from behind to beat Borussia Dortmund 3-2 at Berlin's
Olympic Stadium.

"Dortmund played well, but luckily the team responded well
to come back from 1-0 down," said Berlin coach Lucien
Favre.

"I am very, very pleased that we are at top of the table,
but after just six games it is impossible to analyse where
we really are. There is still a lot of football left in
this season."

Dortmund's Croatian striker Mladen Petric had given the
guests an early lead before Hertha's Marko Pantelic scored
his fourth goal in three games to level.

Brazilian Lucio and Solomon Okoronkwo then added
second-half goals, before Petric added his second goal with
two minutes remaining.

Arminia Bielefeld lost their second place in the league and
dropped to sixth as Schalke 04 hit them with a convincing
3-0 defeat to keep their unbeaten record and move to
fourth.

Germany striker Kevin Kuranyi opened the scoring for the
hosts and Gerald Asamoah and Brazilian defender Rafinha hit
second-half goals.

Hansa Rostock picked up their first win of the season to
move off the bottom of the table with a 2-0 win over
Duisburg.

Striker Sebastian Haehnge opened the scoring on 34 minutes
before striker Enrico Kern converted a 53rd minute penalty.

Hamburg got their third win of the season and moved into
fifth as captain Rafael van de Vaart hit a second-half goal
at home to Nuremberg which sealed the win.

Energie Cottbus took over as the Bundesliga's bottom side
when they were humbled 2-1 at home to VfL Wolfsburg.

On Friday VfL Bochum and Eintracht Frankfurt ground out a
0-0 draw, while Bayer Leverkusen are at Hanover on Sunday
with Bayern travelling to Karlsruhe.

Bremen thump Stuttgart to revive campaign
By Iain Rogers

BERLIN, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Hugo Almeida scored twice in
two minutes to help injury-hit Werder Bremen to a
convincing 4-1 victory over champions VfB Stuttgart in the
Bundesliga on Saturday.

The two heavyweights made disappointing starts to the
season, winning only two of their first five matches, and
were looking to bounce back from mid-week Champions League
defeats.

A rampant Bremen made a spectacular start, racing into a
2-0 lead inside four minutes after Almeida beat Stuttgart
keeper Raphael Schaefer with sharp strikes from the edge of
the box.

Stuttgart hit back in the 13th minute, midfielder Sami
Khedira springing the offside trap and squaring for German
international striker Mario Gomez to tap in with Bremen
keeper Tim Wiese stranded.

But the home side scored again just two minutes later,
burly Ivory Coast striker Boubacar Sanogo beating Fernando
Meira to a Petri Pasanen cross and heading powerfully into
the net.

Midfielder Diego completed Stuttgart's humbling just before
the end, his deflected shot from distance spinning past
Schaefer.

With six matches played, Bremen move up to seventh on 10
points, two behind leaders Hertha Berlin, who beat Borussia
Dortmund 3-2 on Saturday.

Bayern Munich, second on 11 points with a game in hand, can
reclaim the top spot on Sunday when they play at Karlsruhe
SC.

Schalke 04, also looking to recover from Champions League
defeat, moved up to fourth place with a comfortable 3-0 win
over Arminia Bielefeld.

Kevin Kuranyi opened the scoring in the 24th minute, the
tall German international striker outjumping defender
Tobias Rau and heading Christian Pander's cross low past
Mathias Hain.

Gerald Asamoah ran on to keeper Manuel Neuer's clearance
and lashed the ball home early in the second half and then
won a penalty 10 minutes later which Rafinha blasted in for
3-0.

Hamburg SV claimed fifth place on Saturday with a 1-0 home
win over fellow UEFA Cup hopefuls Nuremberg.

Ivica Olic created Hamburg's winner with a weaving run into
the box on 53 minutes. The Croatian striker squared the
ball past the advancing Nuremberg keeper to Rafael van der
Vaart and the Dutchman bundled the ball into the empty
goal.

Stuttgart beaten in Bundesliga
September 22, 2007

MUNICH (Ticker) - German champions Stuttgart suffered a 4-1
mauling at Werder Bremen on Saturday.

The day saw Hertha Berlin climb to the top of the standings
with a 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund.

Armin Veh's Stuttgart got off to the worst possible start
at the Weser Stadion when Hugo Almeida put the hosts two up
in the first five minutes.

Mario Gomez halved the deficit for the visitors in the 13th
minute but Boubacar Sanogo restored Bremen's two-goal
cushion within 60 seconds.

Diego then celebrated his new contract - the Brazilian
playmaker is now committed to the club until 2011 - by
putting the icing on the cake with the fourth goal two
minutes from time.

Hertha recovered from going a goal down to Mladen Petric
just after the half-hour mark to triumph against Dortmund.

Marko Pantelic (43), Lucio (54) and Solomon Okoronkwo (76)
did the damage for the home team before Petric hit his
second of the match to give the scoreline some
respectability for the visitors.

The win for Hertha sees them move a point clear of
second-placed Bayern Munich, who visit Karlsruhe on Sunday.

Eintracht Frankfurt drop a place to third after their
goalless draw at Bochum on Friday night.

Schalke moved up to fourth courtesy of a 3-0 victory over
Arminia Bielefeld, the goals coming from Kevin Kuranyi
(24), Gerald Asamoah (54) and Marcio Rafinha (65) who
netted from the spot.

Hamburg captain Rafael van der Vaart netted the decisive
goal eight minutes after the interval as his side moved up
to fifth with a 1-0 win over Nurnberg.

Hansa Rostock climbed off the bottom after seeing off
Duisburg 2-0 to collect their first points of the season,
Sebastian Hahnge (34) and Enrico Kern (53) bagging the
goals.

Energie Cottbus take over at the foot after going down 2-1
at home to Wolfsburg. Jacek Krzynowek notched the Wolves'
winner seven minutes from time after Dennis Sorensen had
cancelled out Edin Dzeko's opener.

Frankfurt go second after goalless draw at Bochum

BERLIN, Sept 21 (Reuters) - Eintracht Frankfurt drew 0-0 at
VfL Bochum on Friday to go second in the Bundesliga behind
Bayern Munich.

Frankfurt had the pick of the chances in a scrappy match,
midfielder Alexander Meier squandering two first-half
headers and Ioannis Amanatidis twice going close in the
second period.

Visiting keeper Markus Proell suffered a nasty head wound
after a clash with Bochum defender Marcel Maltritz in the
34th minute and was replaced after the break by Oka
Nikolov.

Frankfurt have 11 points from six matches, the same points
tally as leaders Bayern who play their game in hand at
Karlsruhe on Sunday. Bochum moved up to eighth on eight
points.

Werder Bremen host champions VfB Stuttgart in the pick of
Saturday's matches.

fishy out of interest, where do you watch bayern games?

I have watched the last 2 in full on Setanta. They have a full match showing at 5:15pm every Tuesday, with highlights of all the Buli matches at 8pm as well.

I'm trying to get an Australian FC Bayern fan club going as well. Need 5 names to get my papers off to Munich.

Like the idea of a fan club being called " FC Bayern Fanclub Red Kangaroos Australia"?

PM me for more info. I'm reading LU a lot this week. ;-)

Klose bags hat-trick as Bayern rout Cottbus
by Ryland James
September 26, 2007

BERLIN (AFP) - Miroslav Klose bagged a hat-trick
to take
his tally of Bundesliga goals to eight as Bayern
Munich
opened up a three-point lead at the top of the
table with a
4-0 win over bottom-side Energie Cottbus on
Tuesday.

Klose, the top scorer at last year's World Cup,
struck in
the 59th and 75th minutes after Cottbus put up a
spirited
fight for the first hour before the flood-gates
opened.

Argentinian defender Martin Demichelis scored
with a header
on 63 minutes as Bayern took control at Munich's
Allianz
Arena ground before Italian World Cup winner Luca
Toni
bagged his fifth goal of the season.

His 69th minute strike and Klose's pair means
that Bayern's
first-choice strikers have now scored 13 league
goals in
just seven games to more than justify the 23
million euros
spent on the pair last summer.

Bayer Leverkusen are up to second-place thanks to
their 2-1
win over Nuremberg.

The home side took the lead when German striker
Stefan
Kiessling fired them into a 40th minute lead
before
Slovakian midfielder Marek Mintal equalised with
a
second-half penalty.

But Bayer's Swiss midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta
sealed the
win with a 76th minute goal.

VfB Stuttgart picked up a much-needed win after
they took a
1-0 lead at VfL Bochum thanks to Roberto
Hilbert's
second-half strike, which lifts them up to ninth.

Ten-man Karlsruhe managed a 1-0 win at Eintracht
Frankfurt
while Hanover enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 win at
Arminia
Bielefeld.

On Tuesday night, Schalke 04 strikers Kevin
Kuranyi and
Halil Altintop fired the Royal Blues to a 2-0 win
over
Duisburg which leaves them third.

And despite taking an early lead at home to Hansa
Rostock,
Hertha Berlin went 3-1 down as Rostock picked up
their
second consecutive win and their fortunes have
certainly
improved after losing all of their first five
games.

And Hamburg are up to third in the table as they
had no
problems at Borussia Dortmund as they dominated
their hosts
in a 3-0 romp while Werder Bremen and VfL
Wolfsburg managed
a 1-1 draw.

Klose scores three as Bayern crush Cottbus 5-0
By Erik Kirschbaum

BERLIN, Sept 26 (Reuters) - Miroslav Klose scored
a
hat-trick in the final half hour to lead Bayern
Munich to a
5-0 home win over bottom-of-the-table Energie
Cottbus on
Wednesday and raise his tally to eight goals in
his six
Bundesliga games.

Martin Demichelis and Luca Toni also scored in
the last
half hour for Bayern, who moved three points
clear at the
top of the table with 17 points from seven games.
Bayer
Leverkusen moved into second place after beating
Nuremberg
2-1 away.

Averaging three goals per match, the new-look
Bayern lead
the way in the Bundesliga scoring stakes with 21
goals and
at this pace could surpass their 2006/07 total of
55 goals
by the mid-season Christmas break.

Klose broke a tense stalemate in the 59th minute,
pouncing
on a blunder by Cottbus goalkeeper Tomislav
Piplica. Martin
Demichelis doubled the lead four minutes later
before Toni
got his fifth goal of the season in the 69th
minute.

Klose, the league's top scorer, claimed his
second in the
75th minute, chesting down a cross from
17-year-old prodigy
Toni Kroos and beating Piplica with a fine shot
into the
left corner.

Klose, who came from Werder Bremen in the close
season,
completed the scoring one minute from time,
heading in
another fine cross from Kroos, in a match played
under a
steady drizzle and watched by a crowd of 69,000.

MISSED CHANCES

"I don't know what happened," Klose told Premiere
television. "At halftime the coach said we had to
be
patient. We had chances in the first half but
didn't use
them. In the second half we had a good run.
Everyone plays
better then."

The Germany striker leads the scoring table with
eight
goals; Toni is joiny second with five. But Klose,
who
clearly plays well with the Italy striker and new
arrival,
said he did not want to discuss their
understanding on the
pitch.

"Let's not talk too much about it," Klose said.
"Otherwise
it'll be ruined."

But Klose was happy to talk about Kroos, who
played the
final 28 minutes in his debut for Bayern. The
young
midfielder was recently voted Germany's best
under-20
player.

"He's a world-class player, even though he's
still so
young," said Klose. "He's a great talent."

Klose encounter for Cottbus in Bundesliga
September 26, 2007

MUNICH (TICKER) -- Bayern Munich extended their
advantage
at the Bundesliga summit to three points with a
5-0
thumping of crisis-hit Energie Cottbus on
Wednesday, while
German champions Stuttgart got their campaign
back on track
with a 1-0 win over Bochum.

Germany striker Miroslav Klose was the chief
architect of
the visitors' downfall with a second-half
hat-trick.

Martin Demichelis and Luca Toni also notched
after the
interval following a goalless first period.

Over the weekend Cottbus, bottom of the league
with just
two points, sacked popular head coach Petrik
Sander - a
move that prompted furious fan protests aimed at
controversial club president Ulrich Lepsch.

Sander's assistant Thomas Hossmang was asked to
take the
helm for the game in Munich, but refused due to
his close
ties with the departed coach.

Amateur team coach Heiko Weber took temporary
charge, but
could not prevent the league leaders romping to a
comfortable win.

Roberto Hilbert grabbed the only goal of the game
as
Stuttgart, who managed just two victories from
their first
six games, picked up a much-needed three points.
Hilbert
struck five minutes into the second half to move
Armin
Veh's team up four places to ninth in the
standings.

Elsewhere, Bundesliga new boys Karlsruhe
registered an
impressive 1-0 win at Eintracht Frankfurt. Maik
Franz
grabbed the crucial goal six minutes after the
interval.
Karlsruhe were reduced to 10 men two minutes from
the end
when Andreas Gorlitz saw red, but the points were
already
safe.

Bayer Leverkusen moved up to second spot by
triumphing 2-1
at Nurnberg, who remain in the relegation zone.

Steffan Kiessling gave the visitors the lead six
minutes
before half-time and, although a 73rd-minute
penalty from
Marek Mintal briefly restored parity, Tranquillo
Barnetta's
goal three minutes later sealed the points.

Finally on Wednesday, Hannover were 2-0 winners
at Arminia
Bielefeld. Szabolcs Huszti broke the deadlock
from the spot
nine minutes after the restart and Sergio Pinto
made the

Bundesliga: Kuranyi on target again for Schalke

BERLIN, Sept 25 (Reuters) - Kevin Kuranyi scored
his fourth
goal of the season to help Schalke 04 to a 2-0
win at MSV
Duisburg which put his team second in the
Bundesliga on
Tuesday.

Hamburg SV also won away, humbling Borussia
Dortmund 3-0 to
go third, level with Schalke on 13 points and one
behind
leaders Bayern Munich who host bottom club
Energie Cottbus
on Wednesday.

Hertha Berlin missed a chance to go top as Hansa
Rostock
came from behind to win 3-1 at the Olympic
Stadium while
Brazilian midfielder Diego netted in Werder
Bremen's 1-1
draw at VfL Wolfsburg.

Tom Starke was at fault for Schalke's
third-minute opener.
The Duisburg keeper failed to collect on the edge
of the
area and striker Halil Altintop spun on the loose
ball to
fire into the empty net.

Peter Lovenkrands then broke down the left in the
75th
minute and Kuranyi collected the Dane's pass
before
powering a right-foot shot beyond Starke from the
edge of
the box.

'We played some very good football tonight,'
Altintop said.
'We could have scored two or three more.'

Hamburg took the lead in the seventh minute at
Dortmund
when David Jarolim headed a weak clearance by
keeper Roman
Weidenfeller into space for Peruvian Jose
Guerrero to scuff
his shot into the bottom right corner.

Guerrero turned provider in the 42nd, bursting
into the box
and squaring for Rafael van der Vaart to tap in
his fifth
goal of the season.

Dortmund's Florian Kringe was sent off in the
51st before
Hamburg striker Ivica Olic robbed Markus Brzenska
on the
edge of the box and beat Weidenfeller with a low
shot.

'When you win 3-0 at Dortmund you have to be
satisfied,'
Hamburg coach Huub Stevens said.

Diego put Bremen 1-0 up at Wolfsburg when he
poked in his
third goal of the season. But Josue equalised 18
minutes
later by beating Tim Wiese with a shot high to
the Bremen
keeper's right.

Champions VfB Stuttgart, struggling in 13th place
with
seven points from six matches, entertain VfL
Bochum on
Wednesday while fifth-placed Bayer Leverkusen
travel to
Nuremberg.
