however still no word on whether his retirement is effective immediately or at the end of the season.

S***, guess Mullen will get his opportunity as Newy's senior playmaker. Unless he will play out the year?

Am I correct in assuming that, should Johns retire due to this injury, we'd need to pay out his remaining year (as he hasn't taken up the second year option)? Would that count towards our salary cap or just come out of our coffers?

League legend calls it a day
April 10, 2007 - 2:59PM

Andrew Johns has played his last game of rugby league and will announce that he has retired at 4pm today.

Sources close to Johns have told smh.com.au that he has a bulging disc in his neck and he has decided to retire immediately.

Johns was expected to tell his team-mates at 3pm and will make an announcement at EnergyAustralia Stadium at 4pm.

He underwent a cat scan this morning and has been in a meeting with renowned spinal specialist John Yeo and Knights doctor Neil Halpin since midday.

Its my understanding that season ending injury payments are actually covered by an insurance scheme rather than the clubs.

I would also assume that the club could get salary cap relief based on Joey missing the year, not that it would make much difference at this time of the year.

Thank God for some release on this forum some of the comments coming out of peoples mouths in my office are unbelievable. Actually downright scandalous.

Whilst my opinion about certain aspects of Johns' demeanour are documented as far as footballer he is one of the greats and I feel for the bloke if his career ends as a result of a training mishap following a 30 point drubbing. He deserves better then that.

while i agree its hardly the best way for Johns to retire, i know history will remember what he did on the field far more than the circumstances of his retirement.
