Its not all bad news, as Kotoni Staggs has officially re-signed with the Broncos until 2025. Losing Coates is disappointing though.

NRL 2021: Kotoni Staggs contract, Brisbane Broncos star re-signs until 2025 - NRL
Obviously you’d want to retain Staggs, but that’s a long deal and a lot of coin on a bloke who hasn’t proven that he can cope with the professionalism required in the NRL.

My club has made some desperate signings, and I see some similarities in this. It’s incredible to see the Broncos negotiating from a position where the player has the power. Would have been unthinkable 10 years ago.

I hope they didn't pay overs for him, sure he has had a couple highlight reel trys but I'm not sure he is as good as they think he is.
One thing is for sure, you can almost guarantee they didn’t get him cheap. Players leaving a sinking ship, recruitment in a bit of a mess. A stop gap “saviour” coach. Anything over 600k for a good young centre, that has not been tried at 5/8 at this level, is overs IMO.

How so?

It's not contractually written that he has to play 5/8, if he fails he goes back to the centres where he has proven to be one of the best attacking centres in the comp, if not the.

As a Dragons fans, I am sure you don't need any reminders of how good he can be.

Does anyone pay big money for centres these days? Seems clubs that get themselves into squad cap strife are spending big money on forwards, wingers and centres when those positions really arent going to turn them into a consistently winning side whilst the successful clubs are spending the big money in their spine positions.

Raw nerve, or just particularly salty today?

700k a season is probably overs wouldn't you say?
It was reported by the CM that he has been assured first shot at 5/8, fair to assume that it was a part of the negotiations. Even though I didn't state it was a binding condition of his contract, or even state it was part of the negotiations (see below to refresh your memory).

How dare i question his ability to transition to 5/8 from what he has displayed thus far in his NRL career, what a hide.

Yep, he is a very good centre. Scored a brilliant individual try against us in 2020. I'd love to have him at my club. Using your rationale I'm guessing you don't need to be reminded how good Tariq Sims can be, not the most effective tool to rate a player on one game against a particular club is it. Best wishes against the cows this weekend.

I didn't mean to come across the way I did, it's just frustrating at the moment. Losing players all over the place and then we manage to keep one, the one we'd been desperately trying to keep for a good few months now and most of the commentary seems to be focused about paying overs.

700k overs? it's probably slightly overs, 600k is a good signing, anything above is overs .. but when you got clubs like the Titans prepared to put 1.2m on the table for someone like David Fifita (which I think is huge overs for an edge backrower, despite the bag of tries he has scored he has been missing when the Titans need him to get them back into the game and they're not attacking the opposition's try line).

For me it depends what his role is in the halves, if he's put next to someone like Reynolds.. it's a different proposition altogether, he can just run and develop other skills as time goes on. Obviously, he won't be a game managing half but during his contract negotiations it was reported he won't sign until he knows who the halfback will be, which leads me to believe we're not done yet in the player market.

X Coates goooone
jeebus they've lost some quality players

Nature of the beast, if you were a 20 yo winger with hot prospects, and the Storm came knocking, knowing that there was a clear vacancy for you, I think most people would go compared to the shit storm we have been for the last 2.5 years. Hopefully better days to come at some stage.

We got plenty more coming through, a few better decisions at the top combined with some better coaching and we will be back, both of which seems to be taking place.

Kevvie doing a much better job than people give him credit for

wasn't a crude dig at your club mate,
I know how it is when you hold the dreaded spoon,
losing Coates?sometimes you can't hold 'em when a better offer comes,
but signing Levi....
Jesus wept.

He is just saying there what any Brisbane fan would have known for a good while now, it's not like we have free access to every single kid that grows up in the state

Your average neutral probably thinks we do and likes to make light of where the club is at on the basis that they think we have priority on every kid in the QLD area but it's clearly not the case

The article includes Dearden. I mean we can spell out pretty clearly what is going on at the Broncos. Broncos will need to be prepared to lose more if they go for experience which they need badly.
