As self rightous as the "leather patch" brigade tried to make out their game was, amatuer it wasn't. Far, far from it !!!
They were paying the players fair and reasonable expenses, but they did not receive a salary from their clubs. Rugby went professional in 1995.

"Fair and reasonable" expenses for the level of training and touring commitments that the players were putting in was a pretty comfortable income....
